lThis invention relates to ohice appliances and in particular to posting trays of the type used by banks and other business establish-l ments for containing the account cards or sheets.

An object of the invention is to provide a posting tray with a tiltable front.

Another object is to provide a tiltable front for posting trays, wherein means are included for locking the front in a vertical position.

Another object is to produce an ecient, strong and durable posting tray which may be economically constructed. j

Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear. n

Figure 4 is a plan of the bottom of the tiltable front of the posting tray.

Referring to the drawings, the posting tray has a bottom 1. a front end 2, a rigid side 3 and another side 4. These parts may be formed from pieces of sheet metal.

The side 3 is joined to the end 2,.but the side 4 is so formed that it can be moved from a vertical position and slid into a pocket 5 formed beneath the bottom 1'. Then the side 4 is in the position under the bottom (see Figure 2), a secondary side 6, of less height than the side 4 but extending the length of the tray and fixed to the ends thereof, wlll prevent the contents of the tray from sliding laterally therefrom, as will be readily understood. Y

The end 2 has a handle 7 pivotally mount* ed thereon. Adj acentto the handle there may be fixed a frame 8 for receiving an index card (not shown) or the like.

The bottom 1 has feet 9, and these feet may be provided with resilient pads 10, as is customary in devices of this nature.

c Resting on the bottom 1 is a strip of metal formed with upstruck, inclined protuberances 13, to provide a serrated surface, the purpose of which is fully described in an-lother application for United States'Letters Patent 'filed byV me September 17,1927-, Serial No. 220,171.

Above the protuberances13, there is a rod f 14, extending lengthwise of the tray and havingonej of its ends, threaded to engage. an opening in the tray, and having a nut orl head 15 on the other end 2, as is customary in such travs. M l

The bottom 12 is slotted as shown'at, 16, Figure 3, to receive a spaced pair of L-shaped extensions 17 projecting laterallynfrom the bottom of a tiltable front 1S with which the posting tray is provided. The extensions 17 prevent'displacement of the vfront 18 from its position in the, posting tray. Q f

The front 18 is formed from a Y rectangular sheet .of metal, and its upper horizontal edge is turned to form ahead 19. .l The front extends considerably above the end andsides ofthe posting tray, and` its outer surface, directly abovethe upper edge of the end 2, has welded thereto'anoutwardly projecting shelf 20. The ribis so disposed as to be engaged` by the flange 21 when'the front is. in the l.position illustrated Y stitutinga handle, while the bottomV ofthe latch is bent outwardly to form a flange 26 that is considerably longer than the flange 25. When the front is in thev position shown by Fig. 2, the edge of the flange 26 abuts the inner face of the rib 22, and thus prevents the front from swinging outwardly. VOn the other hand, the flange 21 abuts the outer face of the rib and thereby prevents the front from swinging inwardly. In this way, the front is locked rigidly in position.

During the time the posting tray is not in use, the front may be disposed in the position shown'by Figure 2, but when the posting tray is in use, the front may be disposed in the forwardly inclined position illustrated by Figure 3.

To shift the front from the position illustrated in Figure 2 to the position it is shown in by Figure 3, the flange 25 of the latch isV grasped and the latch raisedv until the flange 26 overlies the top of the rib 22. The front 1'8 can now be manually swung forwardly,

The invention set forth herein is, of course, susceptible of various modifications and adaptations. y j

The invention claimed is: 1. In combination with a posting tray having an end formed with an upstanding rib, a front projecting above the end and pivotally mounted in the bottom of the posting tray, said lfront having a downwardly projecting flange for engaging the said rib to limit the inward swinging movement thereof, and a gravity latch engaging the said rib for normally preventing the outward swinging movement of the said front. w

In combination with a posting tray having an end formed with an upstanding rib and abot-tom, a tiltable front mounted onsaid bottom and having means fixed with relation thereto engaging said rib alternately with the front to limit swinging movementof said front, andme'ans for'l'ocking the tiltable front with the first-named' means in engagement with said ri'b, said means beingcarried bythe tiltable front and having engagement with said rib.'
