IMPROVEMENT IN HANKS FOR JIBS, &c.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 174,975, dated March 21, 1876; application filed February 2S, 1876. t
able Improvement in Device for Securing J ib- Sails to the Stays of Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,.and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of my invention. Fig. 2 isa view, showing it as applied to a jib-sail.
This invention has relation to devices for securing the jib-sails of vessels to the stay; and it consists in two double semicircular arms pivoted or hinged together, and having formed upon their open ends clampingdisks with elastic cushions, said disks, with the cushions, bei-ug brought together against the material composing the sail by a clampingscrew, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the two arms, pivoted or hinged at c,
and they are of double semicircular form, so that when brought together two openings or spaces, b c, will be formed between the arms, the space or opening b being designed for the reception of the stay, so that the arms may be conveniently clasped around thesame. The lower (gtr open ends of the arms A have formed thereon circular or other convenient form of clamping-disks d, through which passes a clamping-screw, e. Against the inner faces of the disk d are elastic cushions f, their inner surfaces being roughened or serrated, as illustrated in Fig. l. The employment of some soft or elastic material in devices of this character have been found ot' great value' as without them the sail would more or less wear by coming in contact and rubbing against the hard-metal faces of the clalnpingdisks but with the use of the elastic cushions f all danger of wear is entirely removed, thereby producing a device simple in construction and effective in its purpose, while at the same time it may be manufactured at a very triiiing cost.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for securing the ]'ib-sails of vessels to the stay, consisting ofthe double semicircular arms A, pivoted or hinged together at a and formed withfhe clamping-disks d and the elastic cushions fand clamping-screw c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
l In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
