This invention relates to cooling towers and spray ponds, and, particularly to means for distributing the water at the top of the towers.
An object of the invention is to provide an adjustable distributor which is so formed that the spray can be increased or decreased irrespective of the amount of water pressure.
Another object is to provide an efficient,
strong and durable distributor of the type specified, which may be economically constructed and operated.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.

Figure 1 is an elevation of the upper portion of a cooling tower showing the same provided with distributors constructed according to my invention, a portion of the front wall of the cooling tower being torn away;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the distributors shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the distributor Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section through the distributor, the distributor be ing shown in a lowered position by full lines and in a raised position by dotted lines; and
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section as seen from the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, the cooling tower 10 has side walls provided with corrugated plates 11 constituting louvres.
Inside of the tower there are distributing troughs 12 and 13 carried by girders 14.
The troughs 13 are arranged transversely of the girders, While the troughs 12 overlie and are disposed transversely of the troughs 13.
If so desired, the troughs can be arranged on each side of the center'of the tower in the manner illustrated.
Above the upper portion of the tower there is a water supply pipe 15, having branches 16 provided with downturned elbows 17.
Threaded into the elbows 17 are short lengths of pipe 18.
The parts may be so arranged that. the 0 pipes 18 overlie the separate troughs of the cooling tower.
Serial No. 253,679.
The water discharged through the pipes 18 is adapted to be sprayed over the troughs 12 and 13. For this purpose, each of the pipes 18 carries a distributor comprising a base 19 which is connected to an internally threaded collar 20 by ar1ns21. Preferably the base 19 has a greater diameter than thecollar 20.
The base 19 is in the form of an annular dished body with the center of the base depressed in respect to its periphery to provide an inclined surface against which the stream of Water discharged through the pipe 18 will strike and be deflected outwardly therefrom.
So that the streams of water which are de flected by the base will be further broken up in the form of fine sprays, the periphery of the base has an upturned flange 22.
I Projecting upwardly from the center of the base is a hollow cone 23.
The lower portion of the cone adjacent to the upper face of the base has a plurality of openings 24 formed therein.
At suitable intervals around the bottom of the flange 22 there are openings 25. Some of the water depositedon the base of the distributor from the pipe 18 will pass through the openings 24 and 25 during the operation of the device. However, when the supply of water is shut down, any water remaining within the base 19 can drain through the openings 24 so as to prevent the formation of ice within the base during freezing weather, as will be readily understood.
If so desired, the distributor can be in the form of a single casting with all parts integral and the arms 21 can be made in the triangular shape illustrated by Fig. 5. This will assist in breaking up the jets of water deflected from the base 19 into fine spray.
The collar 20 is adapted to be screwed onto the pipe 18 and it may be retained in fixed position thereon by means of a set screw 26.
Should it be desired to increase the spread of the spray deflected from the distributor, the set screw 26 can be loosened and the distributor screwed up on the pipe 18, so as to reduce the orifice between the cone and the end of the pipe. As this orifice is decreased, the spread of the spray will be increased.
The construction of the distributors is such that water will be discharged from the pipes 18 in the form of spray, Whether or not the water pressure is small or great. The distributors have functioned satisfactorily with only suflicient pressure to deliver the water to the top of a cooling tower. Furthermore, as the distributors are adjustably positioned on the pipes 18, the spread of the spray can be readily changed to suit various conditions.
The invention set forth herein is, of course, susceptible of various modifications and adaptations.
The invention claimed is:-
1. A Water distributor comprising a base arranged lowermost, a collar above and spaced from the base and connected thereto by struts, and an upstanding annular flange on the periphery of the base, the Water exiting through the collar, impinging on thebase, and spraying over the flange there being an upwardly tapering deflector arranged upon the base in opposition to the collar, the base being apertured between said deflector and the flange.
2. A water distributor comprising a base arranged lowermost, a collar above and spaced from the base and connected thereto, an upstanding cone in the center of the base,
and an upstanding flange on the periphery of the base, said base having a series of openings around said cone, and another series of openings around said flange.
3. In combination, a water pipe, and a water distributor, said distributor comprisin a base arranged lowermost, a threaded co ar above and spaced from said base and connected thereto by means of struts, and an upstanding annular flange on the peripher of the base, said water-pipe being threade the collar being threaded on the pipe to control the spacing of the pipe and base.
