Description

Aug. v16, 1927. 1,638,990
J. M. ELLIOTT WRENCH Filed May 3. 1926 Patented Aug. 16, 1927.
i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. ELLIOTT, 0F RIMINI, SOUTH CAROLINA.
WRENCH.
Application med may 3, 192s. serial No. 106,330.
The present invention relates to improvements in wrenches of the type embodying a slidable outer jaw, which is adjustable .through the manipulation of a relatively rotatable handle or hand-piece operatively connected with the fixed jaw and co-acting with the slidable jaw through a screw bar.
By the utilization of the device of my invention a tool of this character is provided which requires but a minimum number of parts of simple construction and operation, and therefore may be manufactured at a low cost of production. The parts may readily be assembled for use and manipulated with facility in adjusting the jaws of the wrench, may with equal facility be detached when required, and means are provided whereby the operating parts are adequately lubricated aiid protected from accumulation of dust or dirt, as well as from rust.
The elements or features of the device are so associated and related as to provide a strong, durable, and reliable tool that may be manipulated by the use of both hands if necessary and may with facility be adjusted by the use of one hand only. The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have .illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have-thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench embodying my invention some of the parts being shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a view partially broken away to disclose the operating parts of the wrench.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view at line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a. transverse sectional view at line 4-4 of Figure 1.
In the preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the drawings the outer sliding jaw 1 of usual type is fashioned integral with the stem 2, and the stem, at its end opposite the jaw is fashioned with a longitudinally extending threaded socket 3. The stem may be roundedin shape, but in'such event is provided with flat sides 4 in order that it may remain stationary while other parts of the wrench are Aloeing revolved, for adjustment.
The complementary inner jaw 5 is the fixed jaw and is fashioned with an integral guide sleeve 6 in which the stem 2 reciprocates. The jaw 5 provided with complementary, inner flat faces for engagement with the faces 4 of the stem to permit relative slide movement of the stem in the sleeve and to prevent turning of the sleeve on the stem.
it one side of its inner end the guide sleeve 6 is fashioned with exterior, arcuate flange 7, and the fiange is fashioned with an .interior arcuate flange 8 which provides an inner arcuate groove 9 on the flange 7, for co-action with the hand piece or handle 10.
A portion of the handle is of tubular form to enclose the socket-end of the stem 2, and the handle, which is rotatable on the stem and with relation to the sleeve, also guides the stem in its sliding movement.
Within the tubular end of the handle is carried ascrew bar 11-having a head 12 to lit neatly therein, and a pin 13 is driven through transverse openings in the tubular handle and through an aperture in the head for securing the screw bar and its head in rigid relation to the tubular handle. The screw bar yis threaded into the threaded socket 3 of the stem 2, and it will be apparent that the tubular handle in co-action with the rounded stem is vadapted to guide the handle and maintain itin position against wabbling or lost motion on the stem as a guide for the screw bar as it is turned in 2 its socket.
For coupling the handle with the guide sleeve I employ an annular, exterior groove 14 at the end of the tubular handle, in which the arcuate lug 8 neatly fits, and the annular vbead 15 formed by the groove at the end of the tubular handle, turns in the complementary groove 9 of the flanged sleeve. The end of the tubular handle abuts against the end face of the sleeve for frictional engagement when the handle is turned, and the arcuate lug 8 on the groove 14, not only guides the rotating handle, but retains the handle in its relation to the sleeve.
Thus for moving the slide jaw 1 relatively to the fixed jaw 5 the tubular handle is grasped in the hand and turned to the right or to the left as desired to close or to open the jaws.
The parts may be lubricated b applying oil or grease to the screw lbar and7 to the exterior surface ot the stem, and as vthese parts are enclosed within other parts of the tool they are protected from accumulation of dust or grit, and also against rust.
lf necessary, the handle and guide jaw with its sleeve may be detached from the stem by turning the screw bar out of its socket in the stem whereupon the tubu'lai` handle hand sleeve are uncoupled, and of course, with the parts in operative position, the handle may be turned to close the sliding jaw against the fixed jaw.
Thevarious parts of the tool are finished in such manner as t-o insure a close lit throughout, and a stable, durable, and readily manipulated wrench is thus provided.
Having thus ifully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination with a sliding jaw, an integral stem having a threaded socket,
and a non-rotatable guide sleeve lon the stem having a ixed jaw, of a tubular handle rotatable on the stem, a screw bar within the handle hav-ing a head fixed thereto and operable in the threaded socket, and coupling means between the tubular handle and sleeve.
2. The combination with a sliding jaw having an integral stem and a threaded socket `in the stem, of a -iiXed having a guide sleeve on the stem anda lug on said sleeve, a tubular handle having an annu-lar groove for said lug and rotatable fon the stem, a screw bar within the handle operable in the threaded socket, a head'on the bar, and means for rigidly fastening said head Within the handle.
In testimony whereof I have aiitixed my signature.
JOI-1N M. ELLIOTT.
