Description
W, J. HAWKINS ELECTRIC CAPsTAN Filed Dec. 21, 1925 Aug. 2, 1927.
" the proper number ot teeth'. The reduction ratio :may be so great that overhauling is practically impossible and no pawls are required7 in small capstans of this type. For larger capstans, however, pawls ot the usual type inay be employed.
To lubricate the gearing, a grease-plug'QS and an oil-plug 29 are provided. The disc carries an oil pan BOwhich supplies lu-` bricant to the ball-bearing 19 and to the s'haftf18.y The overflow `troni this pan is caughtin recesses in the top of the-disc 20, from which the oil, through holes 31'. passes to the bolts 21 on which the planetary gears 22e-23 nare mounted, the holes 31 y being placed at the trailing sides'o't thereccsses and being drilled in such directions that the inert-ia due to th-einotion of the disc 2O Vas-` sists gravity in feeding' the oil tothe bolts.
The oil running through the holes 31 is finally caught by the plate 32 which is clainped between the lower internal gear and the radial lugs t of the standard 4: to
which saidvgearis secured. This plate retains lubricant inthe gearing, but 'excludes it trein the inotor below. ingfrings in its central boss which surrounds the hub of the pinion 17 `and forms a seal'thereon. The oil and grease running downto thc rollers .9 is vsealed in by the water-tight ring 34 which is inserted in a.V
groove inthe base o'l the standardfl and projects upwardly into contact with the barrelB.
p The base of the standard 4 is closed by a plate 'which is fastened to it` by screws 36, the plate 35 havingopenings lined with insulating and water-tightfbushes 37 `for the admission of the Inotor terminal wires 38.
. rlhe base of the standardill:` provided with Vbolt'lioles 39so that the capstan may be bolted to the deck of a vessel. At each of these bolt holes, the standard 4; hasV a down'-V ward extension 4:0 which serves to' hold its kbottom ring 41 high enough trein the deck` to allow for the cainber of the latter.V
What is claimed is:` Y i y 1. An electric capstan comprising a `rotative'barrel, a stationary hollow standard for It carries packand within said barrel, `hunting-tooth plane` tary reduction gearing Within and driving said barrel, and a- Water and oiltight motor within said `standard and driving `said gearing, .saidbarrel having an operating section the lowerl `part of said Tstandardand said motor and having a head concentric with sui-mounting said section and enclosing said gearing.`
2. An electric capstan comprising a rota#v tive barrel, a stationary hollow standard for and within said barrel,V reduction gearing within and driving said barrel, and a inotoi' within said standard and vdriving said gearing, said gearing including a pinion driven` by said motor, two huntingftooth internal gears respectively secured to said standard and to said barrel, anda ,series ot double `hunting-tooth planetarygea'rs meshing with y series ofstuds carried by said disc, two` `hunting-tooth internal gears respectively secured to said standard and to said barrel, and a series of vvdouble hunting-tooth planetary gears on saidstuds and meshing with said pinion and withboth Vinternal gears.
4. An electric capstan comprising a rota tive barrel, a stationary hollow standard for and within said barrel, hunting-tooth planetary reduction gearing within and driving said barrel; a motor within said standard and "driving said gearing, anda series ot thrust rollers and studs supported by `said standard, and a ledge and thrust ring acting as roller raceways and `carried byV said barrel and engaging said rollersito hold saidV barrel and said standard together.
In testimony whereof, Ihave signed my naine to this specification.
