INTERCHANGEABLE INI'rI'AL on onNAMEn'rAL nnconn'rron roa HAND Baas AND OTHER ARTICLES.
Application filed July 10, 1925. Serial No'. 42,719.
This invention relates, generally, to im provement in bags, such as shopping bags, Satchels, and the like; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel means of attachment of initials, monograms, or insignia detachably to a desired part of the bag, whereby the initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing portion is interchangeably mounted in its position, so that a purchaser may select any desired bag, and have the clerk immediately provide the bag with the initial, monogram, or insign a that may be desired by the purchaser.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object, the provision to a bag, satchel, and the like, of a novel and simply constructed means in the form of a letter, initial, monogram, or insignia, which is readily detachable from the bag, so as to be interchangeable for replacing the letter, initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing portion by another portion bearing a different letter, initial, monogram, or insignia.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be more readily understood from the following detailed descriptionzof the present invention. With the various objects of the present invention in View, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel ininterchangeable letter, initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing means for bags, and the .like, hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in.
the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is ful-lyillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a face view of a handbag of the pocketbook form, the closin flap of which 1s shown provided with an interchangeable letter, initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing means made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing a fragmentary portion of the above-mentioned flap, and the separable or interchangeable members of the device,- the said members being. illustrated in their separated relation;
and Fig. 3 is a view of the same elements in their separated relation, said view representing some of said members in side or edge elevation, and some partly in elevation and partly in section. v a
Fig. 4 is a rear face view of a pair of the connected members of the interchangeable element, illustrating a slightly modified construction of letter, initial, monogram, or'insigma-bearing means; Fig. 5 is a rear face view of the letter, initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing member of this modified device and Figure 6 is a front face View of the same; Fig, 7 is a view, showing in side elevation and in separated relation, the various elements of this modified device; and Fig. 8 is a face view'of one of the members shown in Figures 4 and 7, with the letter,
initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing member omitted from said view.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
ieferring now more particularly to Fig ures 1, 2 and f the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the main body of any one of the usual hand-bags or ladies pocket-books, provided with a suitably formed closing flap, as 2, adapted to be maintained in closed relation to the body 1 of the bag, by means of fasteners 3, indicated in dotted outline in said Fig. 1, and usually of the well-known glove fastener ty e, although other forms of fasteners may e employed, if desired.
It is usual, in the trade, to provide the flap or other part of the bag in suitable location, with an identifying letter, initial, monogram, or insignia,as.represented in said Fig. 1. To avoid carrying a large stock of bags, provided with permanently fixed letter, initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing menr hers, it is desirable to carry in stock a quantity of interchangeable letter, initial, monogram, orinsignia-bearing members of different styles and kinds, for desired selection from said stock, and to be readilyattached in its interchangeable position, thus enabling the merchant to carry a smaller stock. of
bags, and the like. This, therefore, is the main purpose of the present invention.
7 One form of such interchangeable letter. initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing means is illustrated more particularly in said Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, and the same consists essentially of a base-plate 4, suitably and permanently secured by means of any desirable fastening means upon the outer face of the flap or other suitable portion of the bag. This base-plate 4 is formed with a suitably shaped receiving socket 5 into which is adapted to be forced into frictional holding engagement, but separable or detachable therefrom, a resilient or spring-stud or post 6 of the glove fastener type extending from a plate 7. This plate 7 is suitably secured to, or may form an integral part of a face-plate 8, usually of a dish-shape conformation, being secured to the inner face of said plate 8, so that the latter plate. when the stud or post 6 is forced into the socket 5, will lie directly over the base-plate 4:, and will hide the same from view. as will be evident. The said face-plate 8 is suitably provided upon its outer face with a device 9, which may be a letter, an initial, a monogram, or insignia.
Thus it will be evident, that the letter, initial, monogram, or insignia-providing member thus produced, may easily be detached so as to be readily replaced by another member having a different letter, initial, monogram, or insignia.
If desired, the face-plate 8 may be provided with an alining means, such as a rearwardly extending pin 10, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, which pin is adapted to be forced into the material of which the bag-body 1- or its flap 2 is made, the said pin thereby providing a suitable means which willprevent turning of the face-plate 8 upon the plate 1, and whereby the letter, initial, monogram. or insignia of the plate 8 is always presented to the observer in its properly alined relation to the bag.
Referring now to Figures 4 to 8 inclusive we have shown therein a slight modification of the letter, initial, monogram, or insigniabearing device herein-above described.
The device in this instance, comprises a base-plate 11 adapted to be suitably secured to the flap or other part of the bag, the said base-plate 11 being also provided with a post or stud-receiving socket. similar to the socket 4 illustrated in Fig. 2, but not acre shown. The reference-character 1.2 indicates a suitably shaped face-plate to the rear faceof which is suitably secured a plate 13 carrying a rearwardly projecting resilient or spring-stud of post 14 which is adapted to be forced into frictional holding. but separable, engagement with the receiving socket of the base-plate 11, as will be understood. As shown, the said plate 12 is provided with a series of suitably placed receiving holes or slits 15. Disposed upon the outer face of the plate 12 is another plate 16 of suitable configuration also provided upon its outer face with a device 17, which may be in the form of a letter, initial, monogram, or insignia. Extending rearwardly from this plate 16 are suitably formed fastening lugs or clamps, as 18. which are suitably spaced so as to be readily inserted in the above mentioned holes or slits 15, and to be bent against the back of the plate 12 to positively secure the plate 16 upon said plate 12. When thus secured. the combined plates 12 and 16 may be easily detached from the base-plate 11, so as to be readily displaced by another set of combined face-plate 12 and letter, initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing plate 16, in the manner herein-before described in connection with the construction shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings.
As indicated in Figures at and 7 of the drawings, it is not necessarv to bend over all of the fastening lugs or clamps, and any one or more may be left straight, to provide an alining means which will prevent turn ing of the combined plat- es 12 and 16 upon the base-plate 11, as will be evident.
e are fully aware that other changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention, as set forth in the foregoing specification. and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, we do not limit our present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the va-- rious devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do we confine ourselves to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
\Ve claim In a bag or the like, in combination with a portion of the bag, a letter, initial. monogram, or insignia-bearing means, con'lprising a base-plate, means for securing said baseplate to the bag, an interchangeable letter. initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing plate. and means for separably connecting said latter plate to said base-plate consisting of a spring-post or stud adapted to be forced into a receiving socket with which the base-plate is provided for frictional and separable engagement of the letter. initial, monogram, or insignia-bearing plate with base plate. a: ciated with an alining pin cxtendiiur rear wardly from said letter, initial. nionogl'an'i. or insigniabearing plate to prevent turning of the latter upon said base-plate.
In testimony, that we claim the invention set forth above we have hereunto set our hands this 7th day of July. 1925.
NATHAN GREENBAUM. ALBERT ROSENBAND.
