My invention relates to closures for vessels y and particularly for metal receptacles and has especial reference to that type of closure in which there is employed a lockin lring consistingof an angular piece of arc ed or circular form engaging the marginal portion ofthe cover proper. Such locking ring is adapted to press with a wedge-like action against the cover and against an annularabutment located at the edge portion of the receptacle at a certain distance from the cover.

'Four different forms of'my invention are illustrated'in the accompanying drawings as examples of the many forms in which my invention may be embodied.' Fig. 1 is a lan view, partly in section, of one form o my invention; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3, 4, and farefragmenf tary sectional views illustrating three other forms of my invention.
yThe receptacle A, which may be of any conventional or special shape, is constructed of suitable material,such as sheet metal and has' its sidewall 10 connected by means of a lapped or folded oint 11 with a cover 'seating ring 12. In t e form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cover seating ring `is constructed of sheetmetal bent to form a step-like'crosssectionhaving a higher supporting surface 40' 13 and a lower supporting vsurface 14, which surfaces serve respectively for supporting a locking ring and a packing presently to be described. An outer ring 15 which encases the joint 11 extends over the higber'surface 13 and has a portion of its upper horizontally extending. flange 16 spaced therefrom to provide a channel 17 'in which' a portion of the ylocking ringis adapted to be inserted.
The locking ring 18 is constructed of sheet metal and consists of a -plane horizontall extending flan e 19 adapted to be 'secured' in the channel 7 and a c lindrical ange 20 extending downwardly om said lhorizontal fiange `at the inner edge thereof.
The locking ring is split as indicated at 21 extending wall 27 of the cover seating ring.-
in Fig. 1 to permit it'to be-gradually insertedin position and also to provide it with the required resiliency; it being understood that the diameter of the ring is so ,proportioned that when not in position upon the receptacle, the split ends thereof will spread andcause the ring to assume a larger diameter than when it is locked in position upon the receptacle.
The cover 22 of the receptacle is formed with a raised marginalrtion, which in' the constructional examp e illustrated, vconsists of an upwardly extending cylindrical flange 23 'having at its upper edge a horizontal marginal flange 24. A packing 26 of any suitable material and preferably of annular shape is adapted to be seated upon the lower surface 14- of the cover seating ring; when the. parts of the closurev are assembled, the packing is conned in a vertical direction between the marginal flange 24 of the cover and the lower surface 14 of the cover seating ring, while spreading of the packing in a horizontal direction is prevented by the vertical cylindrical flange 23 of the cover and the upwardly In assembling the closure, the packing is placed upon the lower surface. 14, 'after' which the'cover 22 is placed position, 'with 'the marginal Han 'e 24 thereof upon the packing.A The locking ring 418 isthen placed in its position with itsflanges 19 and 20 engaged within the channels 17 and 25' respectively. In inserting the locking rmg, one end of the flange l19 is inserted within the channel 17. and the ring is forced gradually into position therein by the use 'of a suitable tool`; the tool being moved around the circumference of the ring until the other end thereof snaps into locked position. In order to facilitate the insertion of the locking ring, the vertical flange 20 thereof is cut away a. short distance from the split ends. For convenience in removing the ring, a slot `28 is cut into-the horizontal flange 19 adjacent to one of the ends of the l lll ference of the cover seating ring instead of ring, said slot extending inwardly from the outer edge of the ring-a suilicient distance for the inner edge of the slot to be exposed beyond the flan e 16` to permit the msertion of a tool or springing the ring inwardly to unlock it. The construction illustrated by Fig. 3 is of the same general character as the one described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2, the difference being` chiefiy inthe shape of the( cover seating ring 12 which .is shown as provided with an annular upwardly pro- `jecting ridge 27a provided for the purpose of stiil'ening. said ring and for cooperating with the vertical flange 23 of the cover to prevent spreading of the packing. The upper face 13a of the ridge 27* corresponds to the upper supporting surface 13 of the cover seating ring shown in Fig. 2; said face cooperating with the flange 16a of theV outer ring 15a to define a channel corresponding to the channel 17, in which the horizontal flange 19 of the locking ring engages, and the lower surface 14a v serving as a support for the packing 26.
While in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the cover seat-- ing ring is located within the mouth of the receptacle, Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate constructions in which such seating ring is disposed exteriorly of the receptacle and surrounds the same at the mouth. In Fig. 4 the cover seating ring 12b is of angular cross-section, having a vertical cylindrical member 27b on the upper face 13b of which Athe horizontal flange 19 of the lockingl ring. is'seated; the face 13b cooperating with the flange 16b provided at the upper end `of the outer ring 15b to `define the channel 17b inv which flange 19 engages. If desired, an outer ring such as indicated by the reference character 15 may be added in order to increase the .'ssecuritj7 of the closure., In this form, the channel 17,ffor the accommodation of the flange 19 of the Ylocking ring ps2 formed entirely in the cover seating rlng f Inorder that the side wall 10 of the receptacle may be --connected with the cover the v seat ring in such a manner as to prevent` ring. Such a connection or fastening may be considered the equivalent of one obtained 'by screws, bolts, interlocking projections,
and recesses or of one welding. y
` In each of the forms of my invention illustrated, the locking ring is identical, being obtained by electric constructed of sheet metal and split as indicated at 21 in Fig. 1 to enable it to be sprung into locked position, said ring pos'- sesslng an inherent resiliency tending to ex-y pand the same and cause it to hold itself securely in said locked-position.` It will be noted that in all forms ofthe invention, the outeredge of the horizontal flange 19 of the locking ring is supported upon a horizontally extending- higher surface 13, 13, 13b, etc. of the cover seating ring, which surface cooperates either with the iiange 16 of the cover seating ring to define a channel in which said flange 19 is engaged to prevent canting of the rin or said channel is formed directly in t e ring as indicated by the reference character 17 c vin Fig. 5.
While I have shown these higher surfaces 13, 13a, 13", as continuous, it willbe understood that an interrupted series of lugs or x abutments would be the fullv equivalent. Likewise. while the recess 25 of the cover has been shown as a continuous. annular groove, the substitution of a series ofl upwardly for preventing lnward -movement ofv the locking ring would be the ,same in principle as the provisionof the recess. It will also be noted that in all the examples of construction herein illustrated, I have resorted tothe principle ofconfining the packing 26 tween a pair of substantially vertically extending' walls toprevent spreading of said ,packing in a horizontal direction.
