- ARTIFICIAL BAIT.
This invention relates to certainimprovements in artificial bait and it is anobject of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprismg a conventional plug together with a covering adapted to be detachably applied to said plug toprovide the desired lur 7 Another object of the invention is to provide a bait of this kind wherein a stretchable cover is adapted to be snugly engaged with the plug and wherein said 'plug and cover are provided with coacting means to effectually maintain the cover in applied position yet at the sametime readily permitting removal of the cover. V
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangementof the several parts of my improved artificial bait whereby certain important advantages-are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and other- Wise more convenient and advantageous for use, as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. I
In order that my invention may be the better understood, Iwill now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accom? panying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view inside elevation illus: trating an artificial-bait constructed in accordance with-an embodiment of my inven tion;
Fig. 2 is a view in plan of herein disclosed flattened out; i
Figure 3 is a view in bottom plan of the plug as comprised in my improved bait;
. Figure dis. a sectional view taken substan-' tially on the. line H of Figural.
As disclosed inthe accompanying draw-7 ing, P denotes the plug of an artificial bait of requisite configuration or design and which is provided along its bottom surface with theparallel grooves 1.
' A cover C is adapted to be snugly engaged around the plug P and this cover O'is of any desired color and is of rubber or other stretchable or elastic material. This cover C is providedwith the rear extensions 2 in.
simulation of a fish tail and which are preferably disposed beyond the rear of the plug and also have affixed thereto the strips 3 in simulation of the'fins or other partsof a The cover. C is'in the form of a sheet and the cover as the longitudinal marginal portions or ends of the cover C are secured to elongated and substantially rigid strips 4: preferably of metal and which strips are adapted tobe receivedwithin the grooves 1 to effectively maintain the cover C in applied position up i on the plug.
' In applying the cover C, oiie of the longitudinal marginal portions thereofis engaged 1 with a groove 1 and whereupon pullis imposedby gripon theopp'osite longitudinal marginal portion to 'sufliciently stretch the cover vC to assure its extending entirely second longitudinal marginal portionof the I cover. is properly engaged withinthesecond groove 1. V I In practice, the fisherman will take along covers C of different characters or types,
oHEs'rEa- KEABNS, ornmsolv, oH Iof;
that is to say, of different colors or otherwise having individual characteristics, whereby with the use of not more than one, or 'two plugs he will'be able to produce'lures of various kinds. It is also to be noted that the extensions 2 of'the cover C simulating'the tail of thefish serve effectually to shield the rear hook H and thus materially increasing the efficiency of the device as a lure. 7
From the foregoing description it is thought to .be obvious that an artificial bait constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for useby reason of the convenience and facility with which itmay be assembled and operated,
and it will also'be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modificationwithout departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I self to the precise arrangement and forma tion of the several parts herein shown in carrying o ut my invention in practice except do not wish to be understood as limiting mysheet. to the plug for holding the cover sheet to the'plug. 5 V
2. An artificial bait comprising, in combination, a plug, a cover sheet of stretchable material for said plug, and means for detachably attaching the ends of-tl1e cover sheet tov the plug for holding the cover sheet to "the plug, said cover having rear extenslons simulating the tail of a fish When the cover is applied.
3. An artificial bait eomprising,vin combination, a plug having grooves in" a portion thereof, a cover adapted to substantially envelope the plug, and substantially rigid members carried by the. side marginal por- 1 tions'of thecover adapted to bereceivecl stretchable.
In testimony whereof hereunto alfix my 15 signature.
