Description
J. D. JOSLIN Hydraul Hose.
Patented March 9,1875.
THE GRAPHIC C(LPHQTOrLlTfl-QQ 5x41 PARK PLAGLN.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JACOB n. JOSLIN, on CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPRCVEMENT IN HYDRAULIC HOSE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,526, dated March 9, 1875; application filed January 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAGOB D. JOSLIN, of Cleveland, county of Guyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Hydraulic Hose; and I declare the following to be such a full, clear, and exact description thereof as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a hydraulic hose; and consists in an inner and outer coating of canvas, with an intermediate volute or filling ofindia-rubber and canvas, and also in a novel seam, whereby the edges of the outer canvas wrapping are made to protect and preserve the sewing.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a cross-section of a hose embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an isometric view of a portion of the hose, showing the method of seaming the edges of the outer wrapping of canvas.
A represents the inner coating of canvas that is presented to the water or fluid that is passed through the hose. B represents the body of the hose, composed of rubber and can vas, and either in volute form or other suitable form, so that the filling shall present a solid mass of alternate stratums of rubber and canvas, firmly welded together in the process of construction. 0 is the outer coating of canvas. The edges of this outer wrapping of canvas are brought together at c, in the manner shown in Fig. 2, so as to project out in the form of a flange beyond the stitching, which is at c. The object of this flange is to form a shoulder that will strike the ground or any other obstacle, and shield the stitching c from damage.
The object of this invention is to form a hose which may be readily dried by natural or artificial heat without damage. When the outer coating is of leather or rubber, or is impregnated with rubber or its equivalent, it is materially damaged in drying, either by artificial or natural heat; it becomes hard, and is liable to crack open, and destroy the utility of the hose.
In my device the outer and inner coating, being of canvas alone, willreadily dry, either by artificial or natural heat, Without damage, either to the outer coating or to the fillings between them. The inner coating of canvas, 'A, is preferably turned in and stitched at a.
What 1 claim as my invention is 1. The hydraulic hose, lined upon the inside and outside with canvas alone, with a filling between the said linings of canvas and rubber, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the hose constructed with the outer and inner canvas linings, and intermediate alternate layers of canvas and rubber, the single outstanding seam 0, formed by turning the two free edges of the outside wrapper O outward, cementing them together by an intermediate rubber stratum, and sewing the same close to the body of the hose at c, as and for the purpose described.
JACOB 1). JOSLIN.
