MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.

My invention relates, more particularly, to the-cupped mouth-pieces for musical instrumentsv generally termed fbrasses and comprising cornets, trumpe ts, and other instruments the mouth-piece.toywhich, my. invention relates bein the part which slips into the mouthpipe 0 the instrument.

These mouth-pieces comprise a cup portion extending'from the outer end. of a tubular stem and a terminal rim-portion at the outer end' gof the 'cup -and? againstgwhiph the performer presses his lips in playing the instrument equipped with the mouth-piece.

It has been found in practice that to meet the varying conditions, it is necessary that cups of different forms and sizes and having throat-openings of different sizes be provided, and furthermore that different sizes of tubular stem-portions be provided when the mouth-piece is to be used with different instruments,-as for example, cornets and trumpets, and also that different forms of lipengaging rims be provided to meet the different requirements of the musicians.

As mouth-pieces have heretofore been provided, it is necessary that the musicians purchase a large number of mouth-pieces having cups of different forms and sizes and throat openings of different sizes and stem-portions in order that they may have available mouth-pieces which will more, or less, adequately meet the requirements imposed by the particular conditions under which the instruments are to be played.

My primary obj ect is to provide a construc tion of mouth-piece which will present the interchange of parts required to be provided of different forms or sizes to meet the various conditions under which various brasses are played, thereby rendering available to the musician, and at the minimum expense, a mouthpiece for any of such brasses exactly suited to the particular condition presented.

Referring to the accompanying drawing:

Figure l is a view in side elevation of a mouth-piece constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the mouth-piece, the section being taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1. Figure 3 is a perspective view of a washer shown as forming a part of the construction of the preceding figures; and Figure 4, a perspective view of a throat-forming sleeve, or bushing, also forming a. part of the mouthpiece.

The particular construction shown comprises a tubular stem-portionrepresented at 5, one end ofwhich is shown as of-tapered form,-as represented at 6, at which itis adapt ed to be telescopedwith the mouth-pipe of a brass musical instrument, the particular form of stem-portionshown beingada-pted for use with a trumpet. stenrportion 6 is externally threaded as represented at 'fl vThe; mouthpiece also comprises acup 8 presenting a:passage' 9therethrough expanded at 10, adjacent an annular shoulder 11 in the cup, to form a socket 12 the outer end portion of the wall of which is internally threaded at 13 and at which the cup screws upon the threaded portion of the stem 6.

The mouthpiece also comprises a throat-v forming tube, or bushing, 14 which is removably confined in the socket 12 between the shoulder 11 and the inner end of the tube 6.

The outer end of the cup 8 is externally screw-threaded as represented at 15 to adapt it to receive a rim-portion 16 having internal screw-threads 17 at which it screws upon the threaded portion 15 of the cup, the rim l6 presenting an inwardly-extending flange 18 opposing the adjacent end-face 19 of the cup and between which one, or more, washers 20 may be confined to vary the length of the pasage provided by the mouth-piece from its inlet to its throat-portion.

It will be understood from the foregoing description that a mouth-piece constructed in accordance with my invention permits of the interchange of different sizes, and forms,

The other end of the of elements comprising the mouth-piece, preferably as shown, to provide different forms or sizes of the parts 5, 8, 14 and 16, together with a supply of washers 20, to provide a mouth-piece to meet any particular presented condition, it being understood that a plurality of the throat-forming bushings 14 presenting throat-openings of different sizes would be provided and likewise cups 8 of different forms and sizes and rims 16 of different shape would be provided by reason of the removabilit-y of the throat-forming bushings 14 and interchange thereof and the pro-' vision of the cups 8 as members separate from the other parts of the mouth-piece, a large number of different combinations of parts may be effected, such combination being aug' mented by the provision of the member 5 as a separable part permit-ting of interchange of one member 5 for another thereof of (ii lien ent former size'and furtherby the'provision of the washer feature for increasing the effective length of passage in the cup.

While I have illustratedand described a particular construction embodyinv my invention I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention, and in this connection itmay be sta-tedthat while I have shown a mouth-piece of'such construction that theinterchange feature 'may be availedofasto all of the parts which it is desired under different conditions bejprovided of different sizes or forms, the invention is not limited to; such, a mouth-piece,'as it ma be' incorporated in a mouth piece Kin 'whic the a-daptabilities for interchange are presented' by 1 a lesser 'nuxnb'e'r ofthe" elements" thereggr than the co nstructibn shown NVhat I claim as-new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is:

1. A mouth-piece for brasses comprising a cup, a separate stemportion detachably connected with said cup, said cup containing a socket presenting a shoulder and into which said stem extent s, and a ren'iovahle throat forming-'member located in said socket and clamped in position therein by said shoulder and said stem-portion.

2. A mouth-piece for brasses comprising a cup containing a socket in one end presenting a shoulder and internally threaded, a removable throat-forming member located in said socket, and a stem-portion having a threaded end screwed into the threaded por'-' tion of said socket and against said throatforming '-member for holding 'the -latteragainst said shoulder.
