UNITED STATES RUDOLPH A. R T GH I L, or ennEnnv LLE, rnnnsssnn COMBINATION CIGARETTE AND MATCH BOX.
Application filed November This invention relates to an improved box structure and has for its prime object to provide a box designed to permit convenient carriage of cigarettes and matches.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a box of the above character arranged to provide a plurality of compart ments in which may be readily carried cigarettes, and matches for the ignition thereof.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a box of the above nature of simple and durable construction, designed to be conveniently carried and manufactured at'a relatively low cost.
Other objects and advantages of this invention, will become apparent as the description progresses.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like reference characters are employed to denote like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance with my invention, partially broken away to show the interior construction,
Figure 2 is a transverse horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating a modification of the invention, and
Figure 5is a fragmentary transverse sectional View taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 indicates in its entirety an inner section or container and 11 an outer section or cover. The inner section 10 is preferably formed of a single sheet or blank of card-board or similar material and comprises a back 12, bottom 13, top 14. end members 15 and front portion consisting of a comparatively long front. flap 16, the top 14 having an integral closure flap 17. This inner closure is constructed so as to be slidably fitted within the outer section 11, this outer section being of generally rectangular formation similar to the form of the inner section and being open at is formed so that the back 12, sides 15 and bottom 13 normally maintain their relative its opposite ends. The container 10 19, 1925. Serial No. 70,176.
positions, while the top 14 and closure flap I 17 are flexibly connected to permit swinging movement about the connecting edges. As is readily apparent. from Figure 1 of the drawing, the top 1 1 and closure flap 17 are arranged to be swung in an upward direction about the fold between the said top and the back 12, while the front flap 16 may be readily deflected outwardly in the elevated position of the container section.
Located in the container section 10 at one side thereof is an auxiliary container 17 of rectangular formation extending practically the entire height of the container section and arrai'iged to provide a compartment. This auxiliary container is adapted to contain matches, and in order to facilitate the removal of the matches therefrom, the upper forward and outer sides are cut away as indicated at 18. The larger compartment formed by the remainder of the container sectionis designed to hold cigarettes or the like, the invention thus providing a box arranged to carry smokers articles in a compactmanner.
In order that the matches in the con tainer may be conveniently ignited, the top portion of the container section 10 carries a longitudinal strip 19 of frictional material adapted to provide a suitably roughened striking surface. From this construction. it is apparent that when the container section is open a cigarette maybe withdrawn and a match ignited for lighting the same.
By reference to Figures 2'and4. ofthe drawings, it will beobserved that the auxiliary container 17' constitutes an integral part with the container 10, the blank from which the inner section of the box is formed being folded along parallel lines at one side to provide the front wall 21, inner side wall 22, and rear wall 23 of the said auxiliary container, the said front wall 21 of said auxiliary container contacting with the innor side of the front flap 16, and the rear wall 23 of said auxiliary container contacting with the inner side of the back or rear wall 12 of the said inner section of the box. In this manner the said auxiliary container 17 is conveniently formed and the expense which would be incident to its separate formation is avoided. In the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings the wall 21 of the auxiliary container is formed with a horizontal incision 24 so that the material of this wall above the incision constitutes a closure flap 25 which may be sprung out ardly in the manner shown in the said Figures -t and 5 of the drawings so as to permit of ready access to the matches in the auxiliary container.
In use, it is obvious that a compact and durable box is provided arranged to conveniently carry cigarettes and matches. The box is opened in the customary manner,
namely by the elevation of the inner container section 10 and upward swinging movement of the top 14 and upper flap 17. In this position of the top and flap, a cigarette may readily be withdrawn from the large compartment of the box and a match taken from the small auxiliary compartment. The match may be then conveniently struck upon the roughend striking surface on the inner side of the top and the cigarette conveniently ignited.
From the foregoing description and the drawing, it is obvious that a container of simple and compact construction is embodied in the present invention, designed particularly to provide means in association with a cigarette box for the convenient storage of matches, the number of matches placed in the auxiliary container preferably being equal to the number of cigarettes positioned in the main compartment of the box.
It is to be understood, that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that the structure is readily susceptible of modification so that various changes as to the shape and arrangement thereof maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A box of the class described including a main container comprising a back, sides,
a front flap, and a bottom, the sides and bottom being integrally connected with the said back, and an auxiliary container within the main container at one side thereof including the front integrally connected with the respective side of the main container, :1. side integrally connected with the said front and positioned opposite to the said side of the main container, :1 back integrally connected to the said side of the auxiliary container and engaging the inner side of the back of the main container, the said auxiliary container being open and unobstructed at its upper end, and the front of the auxiliary container having a transverse incision defining a flap.
2. A box of the class described comprising an outer cover section, an inner main container including a back, sides, a closure flap, a front flap, a bottom, the sides and bottom being integrally connected with the said back, the said component parts of the main container being n'iaintained in their proper relative positions by the walls of the outer cover section, and an auxiliary con tainer within the main container at'one side thereof including a front integrally connected with the respective side of the main containeigia side integrally connected with the said front and positioned opposite said side of the main container, a back integrally connected with the said side of the auxiliary container and engaging against the in ner side of the back of the main container, the front of the said auxiliary container having a transverse horizontal incision defining a closure flap adapted to be flexed forwardly to permit of access to the auxiliary container, the said auxiliary container being closed at its top by the closure flap of the main container and at its bottom by the bottom of the main container.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
RUDOLPH A. KRATOCHWILL.
