The present invention relates to what is known in the art as a vegetable cutter, and it has reference to a structure which is believed to be an improvement upon known 5 patented and marketed cutters of the same general class.

Briefly, the invention comprisesa pair of spaced plates connected together by a plurality of bolts, one plate operating as a backing member, and the other plate as a guide. Slidably mounted on the bolts between these plates and held in a predetely g mined position against the backing plate by springs, is a carrier plate having a plurality of cutting blades associated with the guide plate. The backing plate is formed with a hand grip and the carrier plate is provided with an operating bail.

The particular novelty claimed for this particular organization of parts will become more readily apparent in the following detailed description and concluding claims.

' Fig. 4 is a fragmentary View of one corner portion of the upper part of the device. Considering now the parts in order, it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates one of the plates which may be designated as the upper plate. This is of substantially rectangular configuration and functions as a backing member. Struck up from the central portion of this plate are two duplicate tongues 2 which are bent inwardly toward each other and upon themselves as at 3 to cooperate in providing a hand grip. Incidentally, the opening left at the ends of this plate after bending these tongues up, operates in accommodating the sliding motion of the bail arm 4. This bail is of general U-shaped form, the bight portion 5 being shaped to form a convenient handle, and the arms 6 being provided with inturned extremities 7. These inturned extremities are fastened to the slidable carrier plate 8 which normally bears against the under side of this plate 1. The carrier plate is formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced vertically disposed cutting blades 9 of appropriate form. These blades extend slidably down through transverse slots 10 formed in the bottom plate 11. It will be noticed that this bottom plate is formed with a reinforcing rib 12 at its center and is also formed at its corners with outstanding apertured cars 13. Connecting bolt-s 14 extend up through these ears up through openings in the carrier plate and are connected to the corner portions of plate 1. Light weight coiled springs 15 surround the bolts and are interposed between the aide plate 11 and the carrier plate 8, serving to hold the carrier plate up in contact with the underside of the backing plate 1.

It is obvious that by grasping the hand grip on the plate 1 with the fingers and placing the palm of the hand against the handle 5, the bail 4 can be pushed downwardly to project the blades through the guide, slot 10 in the bottom plate. Then, the blades can be readily manipulated for slicing or cut-- ting a vegetable which has been previously placed on an appropriate slicing board. When relieved, the spring serves to return the parts to normal position.

The construction is quite simple and it is i believed that when the description has been read carefully in connection with the drawings, a clear understanding of the same as well as the advantages of operation, will be had. Therefore, lengthy description is believed unnecessary.

Minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed, may be resorted to, if desired.

Having thus described my'invention, what is claimed as new is z- 1. In a vegetable cutter of the class described, upper and lower plates disposed in spaced parallelism, connecting bolts between said plates, a carrier plate slidable on said bolts, cutting blades carried by said carrier plate, said lower plate being provided with guide openings through and beyond which said blades extend, a hand grip carried by said upper plate, and an operating handle mounted on said carrier plate, together with spring means interposed between said lower plate and carrier plate for holding the carrier plate normally in contact with the upper plate.
