L. S. LIEBERMAN DOOR LOCK Filed June 11, 1927 INVENTOR Patented May 29, 1928.
unirsn STATES 1,671,249 PATENT, OFFICE;
LEO s LIEBERMAN, 012 NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR LOCK.
Application filed June 11, 1927. Serial No. 198,029.
This invention relates to door locks.
In apartment houses or tenements it is desirable to provide a door lock {or the dumb waiters that cannot be readily forced and one that will automatically operate as a latch when the door is closed. A. further requirement is that the lock cannot be easily picked 7 or opened from the out side. In factories where a door must be seciuiely fastei'ied and yet permit of the quick opening in caseo't fire or for .use in garages a lock having the same requirements is likewise desirable.
Oneot the objects of this invention is to provide a door lock that will securely fasten the door. Another object or" the invention is to provide a door lock that will latch the door in a closed position upon the closing of the door. Still another object of the invention is to provide adoor lock that cannot be easily forced or picked from the out side. Still another object of the invention. is to provide a door latch that can be locked in closed position.
look embodying the principles of my invention. p
Figure 2 is a view in elevation partly in section along the line 2, 2, Figure 1, looking so in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a modified view of the lock having parts broken off and operable from the outside by akey.
Figure 4 is a view in section along the line 4, 4, of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
In carrying out my invention I propose to provide a door lock 1 comprising three bolts 2, 3, and 4, pivotally connected at 5, 6,
and 7, within housing 8 by links 9 and 10. Links 9 and 10 form a toggle lever. Pivotal connection 6 has secured thereto a spring 11 which is also secured to a. lug 12 at its other end in housing 8. A look 13 is adapted to slide within housing 8 between pivotal con mention 6 and the side wall of housing 8 to prevent the sliding motion of pivotal connection 6 and the consequent withdrawal of bolts 2, 3 and 4, from seats 15, 16, 17.
Rivet shank 20 operates in slot 21 of housing 8. Bolts 2 and 3 operate through guides closure of the door.
Figure l is a view in elevation of a door 22,, 23, securedby screws 24, 25, to door 26. Housing 8 is likewise secured by screws 27 to door 26. In alignment with the holes of guides 24, 25, are seats and 17 in plates 28 and 29 secured by screws 30 to the-iamb 31 of the door, Plates 28 and 29 have bent over tongues 32, 33, co-operating with the bevelled ends of rods 2 and torepress the rods 2 and 3 towards one another against the action of the spring 11 in closing-the door to permit of the bolts entering seats 15 and 17 and likrnviseplate 34 secured by screws 30 to jainb 31 and provided with. tongue 35 functions in a similar manner for bolt 4 toseat in seat 16. 1
In the operation of the device upon the closing of the door bolts 2, 3 and 4, are forced into housing 8 by the co-action of tongues 32 33 and 35, against the bevelled ends of the bolts and of spring 11, which latter forces the bolts into their seats upon the Button 14 is then shifted in slot 20 to a dogging position and the door is, looked. hen it is desired to open the door button 14 is moved to open position, handle, 37 is pulled horizontally away from the doorjamb and bolts 2, 3 and 4 are witl'idrawn from seats 15, 16 and 17.
In. instances where it is necessaryto open the door from the outside the modified form of the device can be used. The modified form of the device is the same in construction except that I provide any well known cylinder lock38 having a lug 39 secured to barrel 40 of lock 38. Lug 39 is adapted, when barrel 40 is rotated, to bear against pivotal connection 6 to withdraw bolts 2, 3. and 4. In the drawing lock 13 is omitted in the modified form although it also could.
easy operation and as it is all enclosed in a housing is of neat appearance. The means for locking the mechanism is not only secure but likewise of simple construction.
Although. I have shown its application to a dumb waiter door its use has a, ide range.
What I claim is: v
1. In a door locking device, a plurality of bolts, said bolts pivotally connected by links within a housing, a spring in said housing, a lug, said spring connected to one of said pivotal connections of said links and to said lug, a plate in said housing adapted to be manually operated to prevent motion of said links.
2. In a door locking device in combination, a plurality of platessecured to the door in extended position, and means to lock said bolts in extended position.
3. In a door locking device in combination, a plurality of plates secured to the door jamb, said plates having bolt seats and tongue bolt guides, a plurality of bolts in alignment with said bolt seats and adapted to seat therein, guides in alignment with said bolt seats, a plurality of bolts operating in said guides,-a housing secured to the door,
said bolts terminating Within said housing, links pivotally connected to the ends of said bolts in said housing, spring means secured to said links to normally maintain said bolts in extended position, and means for manual- 1y locking said bolts in extended position and manual means for retracting said bolts. 4, In a door locking device in combina tion, a plurality of plates secured to the door jamb, said plates having bolt seats and tongue bolt guides, a plurality of bolts in alignment with said bolt seats and adapted to seat therein, guides in alignment with said bolt seats, a plurality of bolts operating in said guides, a housing secured to the door, said bolts terminating Within said housing, links pivotally connected to the ends of said bolts in said housing, spring means secured to said links to normally maintain said bolts in extended position, and means for manually retracting said bolts.
5. In adoor locking device in combination, a plurality of plates secured to the door jamb, said plates having bolt seats and tongue bolt guides, a plurality of bolts in alignment with said bolt seats andadapted to seat there-in, guides in alignment with said bolt seats, a plurality of bolts operating in said guides, a housing secured to the door, said bolts terminating Within said housing, links pivotally connected to the ends of'said bolts in said housing, spring means secured to said links to normally maintain saidbolts in extended positiomand means for locking said bolts in extended position, said means comprising plate, a spring secured to said plate between said plate and said housing, a rivet for said plate having its shank passing through said housing and terminating in a manually operatable button exteriorly of said housing and a slot in the face of said housing for the movement of said shank.
