MINING maorrrun.
Application filed August 31, 1925. Serial No. 53,725.
This invention relates to mining machines and more particularly to mining machines of the laterally fed continuous cutter type.
The primary object of this invention is to provide .a mining machine of the flexibly 'fed continuous cutter type having improved mechanism for feeding the machine, for actuating the cutter chain, and for moving the machine about the mine when arranged on its transport truck. Anotherobjectof this invention is to provide improved mech* anism whereby the machine may be fed at a plurality of speeds, namely, a fast moving or positioning speed, an intermediate sumping speed, and a slow cutting speed. These and other objects of my invention will, however, subsequently appear.
This invention may be embodied in a machine comprising a frame slidable on its bottom on the mine bottom and having projecting forwardly therefrom a rigid cutter bar on which a cutter bit carrying cutter chain is supported. A driving motor preferably is mounted on the frame and has a longitudinally extending armature shaft on the opposite ends of which pinions are rigidly secured. The forward motor pinion is adapted to actuate through improved transmission means a plurality of feed operating and controlling members with which flexible feeding members cooperate, one of the flexible feeding members forming an advance portion which is anchored at its free end at the advancing side of the machine while the other portion is anchored at its free end at the receding side of the machine. The rear motor pinion may actuate, through an improved transmission means, the cutter chain and the truck driving mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of amining machine constructed in accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a portion of the cutting and feeding mechanism being shown in horizontal section. V
Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional View taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, parts being shown in eleva tion.
Fig. 3 is a front end elevational view of the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I
Fig. 4: is a detail transverse horizonta sectional view taken substantially on line 44 of Fig. 2.
In this illustrative construction I have shown a mining machine of the flexibly fed continuous cutter room and pillar type designated as an entirety by the reference character 1 having a frame 2 slidable on its bottom 3 on the mine bottom, or invertible to slide on its plane upper surface 3. .The frame 2 comprises a bed section 4, a motor section 5, a feed section 6, and a section 7 which houses the truck driving mechanism and a portion of the actuating means for the cutter chain, the sections 5, 6, and 7 being mounted upon the bed section 4 and rigidly secured thereto in any approved manner. As shown, the motor section 5 isinterposed between the sections 6 and 7. Housed within the motor section 5 is a motor8, herein of the reversible electric type, having a longit-udinally extending horizontal armature shaft 9. i
Specifically noting the actuating mechanism for the cutter chain and the truck driving member, it will herein be observed that suitablysecured to the rear end of the armature shaft 9 is a spur motor pinion 10 which meshes with a spur gear 11 secured to a shaft 12 disposed parallel with the armature shaft. As illustrated, the shaft 12 is journaled within a bearing 13 carried by the machine frame and has secured thereto at its rear end a bevel pinion 14 which meshes with a. large bevel gear 15 splined as atv 16 to a vertically disposed shaft 17 journaled at its opposite ends in ball bear-V ings 18 and'19 carried by the machine-frame. Arranged coaxially with the shaft 17 and journaled on a bearing sleeve 20 is a driving sprocket 21 which cooperates with the cutter bit carrying cutter chain 22 to drive the latter in ajwell known manner. The cutter chain 22 is supported on a rigid cutter bar 28 which projects forwardly from the bed section 4. Furthermore, splined as at 24 to the shaft 17 is a reciprocable clutch member 26 having formed thereon at its lower end clutch teeth 27 which are adapted to cooperatewith clutch teeth 27 formed in the hub of the driving sprocket 21. Cooperating with the clutch member 26 is a clutch shipper 28 suitably secured to a transversely disposed actuating shaft 29jjournaled as at 30 within the frame section 7 and this shaft has secured thereto at one end thereof a worm rack 31 with which a worm 32 is meshed, the latter being secured to a longitudinally extendin shaft 33 which carries an operating member 34. It will thus be evident that when the operating member 34 is actuated by the operator the cutter chain driving sprocket 21 may be connected in operative driving relation with the shaft 17 or remain stationary at will while the motor 8 continuously operates. It will further be observed that meshing with the bevel gear 15 is a bevel pinion 35 splined as at 36 to a longitudinally extending horizontal shaft 37 Journaled in ball bearings 38 carried by the machine frame and this shaft has suitably secured thereto an internally toothed truck driving member 39 which is adapted to drive the transport truck (not shown) in a well known manner. It will herein be noted that the opposite sides of the frame section 7 are provided with chambers 40 and 41 within which suitable controller and rheostat devices are adapted to be housed.
In specifically describing the improved feeding mechanism it will herein be observed that suitably secured to the forward end of the armature shaft 9 is a spur motor pinion 42 which meshes with a spur gear 43 suitably secured to a longitudinally extending horizontal shaft 44 journaledxin ball bearings 45 carried by a bracket 46 carried by the bed section 4. As shown, the shaft 44 has secured thereto a bevel pinion 47 which meshes with a large bevel gear 48 splined as at 49 to a vertically disposed shaft 50 journaled at 51 and 52 within the frame sections 4 and 6, respectively. Furthermore, splined at 53 to the lower end of the shaft 50 and driven by the latter is a spur gear 54 which meshes with a spur gear 55 splined at 56 to a shaft 57 disposed in front of and parallel with the shaft 50 and this shaft 57 is journaled at its upper and lower ends within ball bearings 58 and 59, respectively. As shown, splined at 60 to the upper end of the shaft 57 is aspur gear 61 which drives through an intermediate gear 62 a spur gear 64 loosely journaled on the upper end of the shaft 50 and this gear 64 is driven at a slow speed in the opposite direction from the gear 54. Rigidly secured to the shaft 57 intermediate its ends is a worm 65 while loosely journaled intermediate the' ends of the shaft 50 is a worm 66, the latter being adapted to be selectively driven at different speeds in opposite directions from the gears 54 and64 through suitable clutch mechanism. This clutch mechanism comprises clutch members 67 and 68 splmed to the hubs of the gears 54 and 64, respectively, and these clutch members have clutch teeth 69 and 70, respectively, adapted to co operate with clutch teeth 71 and 72 formed on'the opposite ends ofthe worm 66. As
shown, clutch shippers 73 and 74 are provided for the clutch members 67 and 68, re-
hubs of bevel gears 91 and 92.
spectively, and these shipper members are connected together by means of a pivotally connected link 75. Herein the shipper member 73 is secured to a transversely dis posed horizontal shaft 76 suitably journaled on the machine frame 2 while the shipper member 74 is splined to a transverse horizontal actuating shaft 77 journaled within bearings 7 8 at the opposite sides of the frame section 6. Suitably secured to the shaft 77 is a worm gear segment 79 which ismeshed with a worm 80 secured to a longitudinally extending horizontal actuating shaft 81 suitably journaled on the machine frame and having at its rear end an operating member 82. It will "thus be evident that when the operator suitably manipulates the operating member 82 the gears 54 and 64 may be selectively connected to the worm 66 to drive the latter at different speeds in opposite directions. It is obvious that the speed reduction between the gear 54 and the gear 64 and the inclination of the teeth on the worms 65 and 66 may be varied to suit different conditions, thereby attaining different feeding speeds. V
Meshing with the worm 66 at opposite sides thereof are worm gears 83 and 84 1'0- tating on parallel longitudinally extending horizontal axes and splined as at 85 to thehubs of bevel gears 86 and 87, while meshing with the worm 65 at opposite sides thereof are worm gears 88 and 89 arranged coaxially with the gears 83 and 84, respectively, and likewise splined as at 90 to the As illustrated, the bevel gears 86, 91 and 87, 92 are respectively journaled on longitudinally extending horizontal shafts 93 and 94, the latter in turn being journaled on the machine frame in ball bearings 95 and in sleeve members 96 later described journaled in detachable cover members 97 secured .to a detachable frame section 98 forming a portion of the feed frame section 6. Meshing with the bevel gears 86, 91 and S7, 92, respectively, are planetary bevel pinions 99 and 100 journaled on radially extending stub shafts 101 supported by planet carrier members 102 splined as at 103 to the shafts 93 and 94, respectively. Herein it will be observed that splined at 104 to each of the shafts 93, 94 are clutch members 105 forming a portion of fricbearing sleeve 112 supported by each of the shafts 98 and 9a is a clutch disk retaining and housing member 113, the hub of which has slidably mounted thereon a clutch applying member 1L1 having projecting fingers 115 which project through apertures formed in the member 113 into engagement with certain of a series of clutch disks 108, 109. Cooperating with each of the members 114 is a shipper member 116 pivoted as at 117 on the machine frame and having formed thereon a. worm rack- 118 which is meshed with a worm 119 suitably'secured to a longitudinally extendinghorizontal actuating shaft 120 suitably journaled within the machine frame and having secured thereto at its rear end an operating member 121. As illustrated, splined at 122 to the hubs of the housing members 110 are feed operating members 123 and 12 1 herein in the form of drums. Cooperating with the drums 123, 124, respectively, are flexible feeding members 125 and 126 herein in the form of wire ropes or cables. It will herein be evident that when the operator suitably manipulates the operating members 121 the drums 123, 12 1 may be connected in operative driving relation with the shafts 93 and 94 or remain idle at will. It will also be evident that when the worms and 66 are simultaneously rotated in the same direction, one feeding speed is obtained while if the worm 65 is rotated and the worm 66 held stationary, it being understood that the latter is self-locking, another feeding speed is obtained, and if the worms 65 and 66 are simultaneously rotated in opposite directions a third feeding speed is obtained, the rotation of the bevel gears 86 and '87 when driven by the worm 66 in opposite directions adding to or subtracting from the speed of rotation of the planet carriers 102. Moreover, it will be observed that carried on the opposite sides of the front end of the machine frame are coaxial longitudinally spaced sets of guide sheaves 127 while supported by the opposite side of the rear end of the machine frame are guide sheaves 128, the guide sheaves 127, 128 cooperating to guide the cables 125, 126 during the various operations of the machine.
In the operation of my improved mining machine it will be noted that when themachine has been transported to the room of the mine on its transport truck and unloaded therefrom, one or the other of the cables p 125, 126 may be extended to a point ad acent the right hand rib of the coal and its free end anchored by a suitable roof jack or take up device. The operator then manipu lates the operating member 82 in a suitable manner, causing the clutch teeth 69 on the clutch member 67 to be connected to the clutch teeth 71-formed on the worm 66, rotating the latter at its fast speed in the opposite direction'to the rotation of the Worm 65 and consequently in view of the opposite threads of the worms the'worm gears 83, 88 and 8 1, 89 are rotated in the same direction, causing the planet carriers 102 to rotate the shafts 93, 9% at a relatively high speed. The desired drum 123, 124-. is then connected in operative driving relation with the driving shaft by means of the clutch 108, 109 and the desired feed cable wound in and the machine fcd toward the right hand rib. at a fast or moving speed. lVhen the cutter bar reaches the desired position adjacent the face of the coal, the feed cable 125 is extended laterally from the drum 123 between certain of the sets of guide sheaves 127 and from the advancing side of the machine to the left hand rib of the coal, the free end of the cable being anchored in position by a suitable roof jack or take up device. The cable 126 is then fed rearwa-rdly about the right hand sheave 128 and forwardly to a jack near the right hand rib. The operator then n'ianipulatcs the operating member 34 and the cutter chain drive sprocket 21is connected in operative driving relation with the shaft 17, consequently causing the cutter chain 22 to be rapidly circulated about the cutter bar. The operating member 82 is then manipulated to bring the clutch members 67 and 68 into their neutral position, rotation of the worm 66 being prevented at that time due to its self-locking feature. As
the worm 65 is constantly driven the worm gears 88 and 89 and the bevel gears 91 and 92 are again rotated, thus causing the planetary pinions 99 and 100to, react on the stationary bevel gears 86 and 87, respectively, consequently causing the planet carriers 102 to drive the shafts 93, 9% at an intermediate speed suitable for sumping. The friction clutch controlling the drum 12 1 is then applied and the cable 126 drawn in and the cutter bar sumped into the face of the coal at an intermediate or'sumping speed, the friction clutch controlling rotation of the drum 123 maintaining a desired controlling tension on the cable 125 at that time. On con'ipletion of sumping, the clutch teeth. 70 on the clutch member 68 are thrown into engagement with the clutch teeth 73 formed on the worn'i 66, causing the latter to be rotated at a much slower speed and in the same direction as the rotation of the worm 65. The bevel gears 86 and 87 are tated in opposite directions from the rotation of the bevel gears 91 and 92, but more then rocutting speed, the drum 124: acting on the receding cable 126 maintaining a desired controlling tension thereon, thus preventing the cutter bar from being swung out of the lrerf. It will also herein be noted that by suitable operation of the clutches controlling the drums 123, 124 th angle of the machine relative to the face of the coalumay be controlled at will. Other ope ations of my improved mining machine will be clearly apparent. to those skilled in the art.
lVhile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
