L. MICHAEL DREDGE TOP SPICE CAN Filed June 12, 1922 Patented Feb. 7, 1928.
4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD IlllIIGfElIAEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T AMERICAN CAN COM- PAQ'Y OF YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DREDGE-TOP SPICE CAN.
Application filed June 12, 1922. Serial No. 567,570. 1
My invention relates in, general to containers 0f the dredge top variety adapted for the packaging of spices, or like materials, and has for a particular object the provision of eflicient means for normally closing both the sifter openings and pouring opening providedv in such a container and for selectively exposing said openings.
A principal object of the invention is the provision, in a container of the character specified, of a sliding closure which may be easily secured in place and manipulated and which is movable to positions either closing the container completely, or closing merely the sifter openings or pouring opening, as desired. A further object of the invention is the provision of a dredge top container of the foregoing character which is adapted to be economically manufactured and which does not involve any parts which require difficult, or complicated operations in construction.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereo I Referring to the drawings,
'Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top portionof the container in which my invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a like view with the closure moved to position in which the sifter openings only are exposed;
Fig. 3 is another similar view in which the sliding closure is moved to its opposite posiand Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a container with the sliding closure removed.
The container in which my invention is sliding tion exposing merely the pouring opening;-
of any desired size or number, but are so grouped that they may be closed by means to be hereinafter described.
A sliding closure 16 is held in place, on 5 the container top by meansof lugs or lips 17, which arepunched'out of the body of the top and offset sufficiently to provide suitable guiding and retainingmeans for the slide 16, which is preferably held rather tightly against the container top to prevent accidental movement thereof.
It will be noted that the pouring opening 14' and the sifter openings 15 are so located that when the slide 16 is in its central posi- 6 tion, as shown in Figure 1, all of said openings are closed. v When the slide is moved to .the right, as shown in Figure 2, the sifter openings only are exposed and the spices, or other contents, may be sifted out of the con- 7 tainer in the well-known manner. When moved in the opposite direction, to the position shown in Figure 3, the closure covers the sifter openings 15 and exposes the pouring opening 14, thus permitting the pouring of the contents im larger quantities, as for filling a small shaker, or other receptacle.
The ends of the slide 16 are rolled, or curled, as indicated at 18, so that they may be readily engaged by the fingers for moving the closure to desired position and it will be manifest that this closure may assume various shapes and sizes to meet particular requirements.
It is thought that the invention and many 86 of its attendant advantages. will be under stood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing 9. from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
L A. dredge top container, comprising a bod having a one piece top secured thereto, sai top being provided with sifter openings and a pouring opening, an imperforate sliding closure mounted in said top and having a central position closing all of said openings and end positions opening said sifter openings or pouring opening, said top being formed with integral retaining lugs for engaging and guiding said sliding closure.
2. A dredging or sifting container having 5 in the main top Wall thereof sifter openings and a pouring opening, all of said openings being in the flat plane of said Wall, and an imperforate sliding closure mounted in said Wall and adapted when in one position to close all of said openings and being slidable openings or the pouring opening, and cut- 10 to positions 0pening selectively the sifter out and bent up lugs 17 holding said closure down on the wall and guiding it to said several positions.
LEONARD MICHAEL.
