DOOR LATCH.
Application filed February 28, 1927. Serial No. 171,446.
This invention relates to a door latching device.
In apartment houses or tenements, the usual forms of fastening means for dumbwaiter doors can be readily broken. or forced either at the bolt or latch or at the hinged side. In addition, the doors sometimes be come sprung which is not desirable. Garage doors generally have a bolt at the bottom and a spring operated bolt at the top with some form of fastening device on the side of the door, so that in order to open a garage door three bolts or looks must be opened. Unless these latches are all closed the door becomes warped and it can be readily forced.
One of the objects of this invention. is to provide a door latching mechanism that is applicable to all types of doors. Another object of the invention is to provide a door latching mechanism that will securely latch and will firmly hold the door in place. Still other objects of the invention are to provide a door latching mechanism that is quickly and easily operated and one that is cheap to manufacture and can be sold for a relatively small amount ofmoney.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my device in latched position. 1
Figure 2 is a broken detailed view in ele vation of Figure 1 showing my device in unlatched position.
Figure 3 is a sectional. view looking in the direction of the arrows along the line 3, 3, of luigure 2.
Figure l is a sectional view looking along the line 1, 1, in the direction of the arrows of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a view of the zugplication of my device to a :lolding garage door.
In carrying out my invention, I propose to provide a strap 1 having bent over ends 2. and removable lugs 3 bolted by bolts and nuts 4. to said. strap. The bent over ends of of strap 1 have holes therein and lugs 3 likewise liave holes therein in alignment with the holes in the ends 2 of the strap. Holes 5 are drilled adjacent to the bent over ends in the strap to secure the strap to the door. Rods or bolts 6, 6, are adapted to slide in the holes of the lugs 3 and bent over ends 2. Rods or bolts 6, 6, are pivotally connected by pins or rivets 7, 7, to links 8 9, 10 and 11. Links 9 and 10 and 8 and 11, each have their other ends pivotally connected by pins or rivets 1.2, 12. Operating at right angles to rods 6, 6, are rods or bolts 13, 1 1, which rods have a flattened end portion 15, 16, having channels 17, 18, formed therein. The end portion of rod 14: is pivotally secured to links 9 and 10 by pin or rivet 12 and the end portion of rod or bolt 13 is likewise pivotally secured to links 8 and 11 by pin. or rivet 12. Pin 12 slides in chan nel 17 of rod 13 and pin 12 slides in channel 18 of rod 1 1.
Centrally of strap 1 is threaded a boss 19. A wing nut 20 having a collar 21, is threaded. into the upper part of said. boss. By tightening the wing nut 20 the channel portions 17, 18, of rods 13, 14, are pinched between the boss 19 and the collar 21 of the wing nut 20 to prevent movement of the mechanism.
The device may be sold in a knocked-down condition in order to facilitate shipment. The rods or bolts 6, 6, 13, 14, and central links 8, 9, 10, 11, are assembled and folded.
The lugs 3, are not secured to strap 1. The
operation of the device is as follows:
The operation of the device is as follows:
A single push or pull of handle 26forniing the end of pivot or pin 7 opens or closes the latch.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a mechanism whereby a door can be bolted on four sides and which mechanism is easily operated due to the toggle linkage and because of its simple construction is cheap to manufacture.
Modifications of the form of central wing nut lock might be made and still fall within the principles of my invention. stance. the ordinary barrel key latch might be utilized where it is desired to open the door from the outside as any rotatable mech- For inill!) anisin can be used to tighten the nut and to prevent motion of the rods.
hat I claim is:
A door latching device comprising a strap having bent over ends, holes in said bent over ends reino able lugs, means for scouring said lugs to said strap holes in said lugs in alignment with the holes in said bent over ends, bolts adapted to slide in said holes of said lngs and bent over ends, two pivotally connected links secured pivotally to each of said bolts by said pivotal connection said links also pivotelly connected attheir other ends to permit of extension and retraction of said links to and from each other, two bolts in the same plane but at right angles to said bolts aforesaid and terminating in slotted ends, said slotted ends adapted to receive the adjacent pivot of said links and to permit of its sliding; therein and for secnring the end of said slotted end to the opposite pivot of said links.
Signed at New Yorle in the county of Newfor and State of New York, this 15th day of February, A. D. 1927.
