This invention relates to locking apparatusthat is concealed so as to prevent tampering therewith and may have reversible parts to permitthe locking apparatus to be readily adapted for right-hand or left-hand doors, and the invention has reference more par ticularly to coin-controlled locking means for doorsj,and especially of the type that contains a counter for recording the number of operations of the'locking apparatus.
An object of the invention is to provide a concealed locking apparatus which shall be so constructed as to be efiicient and reliable, yet having par-ts ofsimple'desigii that will not be costly to manufacture, some of which parts may be arranged in reverse position in the locking mechanism. a
Another object is to provide an improved lock adapted to be controlled by means of coins for doors of toilet rooms, comfort stations or elsewhere; which may be operated by persons without special instructions; and which shall reliably. record the numberof operations of the lock.
A further object is to provide an improved coin-contro'lled lock whichshall be so constructed as to obviate the necessity of 1 l tail showing means for operating a counter;
using delicate springs that might be liable to become broken or deranged, having, in view the provision of strong and reliable and well supported parts. v a A still further object is to provide an improved coin-controlled lock case' in. which coins may be securely held, and toprovide improved door knobs that shall beso secured in place as to be prevented from. being re- 'iiioved .exccpting by first opening the lock case in a proper manner.

A practical embodiment of the improved y 'locking apparatus as preferably constructed comprises a back or base plate 3 constituting the foundation of the locking apparatus and back of the'lock case or casing for enclosing the] apparatus, being arranged on the outer I side or front of the doorand having a bearing boss 4: extending from its back and'into' 3a suitable aperture ,5 in the door, the back "plate 3 being secured to the door by means of; screws 6. A modified .form of keeper comprises a box 139 that is secured by means of screws 14:0 to the door casing, the box having an opening to receive the projected portion of the lock bolt. The box-like keeper is provided with suitable lock mechanism as may be desired that'has a'rotary key barrel 141 which operates and controls two fingers 142 and 142 arranged adjacent to the end of the lock bolt so that when either one of the fingers is moved against the end of the lock bolt the bolt'is forced out of the keeper and permits the door to be opened. I
In'pra'ctical use, the door being closed and locked, with the locking mechanism set as in Figsr6, 7,12,18, 22 and 24:, a coin 143 is inserted through the slot 38 and into the coin chute through theslot 76 in the shutter, the coin passing into the slot 7 9 in the lock bolt in which it is supported by a. portion of its edge on the finger 93. If the knob or handle 86 be turned so as to slightlycompress the spring 85, the arm'91 moves the plunger rod 83 against the coin and thecoin is forced against the abutment and causes retraction of the'lock bolt and compression of the spring 42 while the finger 93 continues to support the coin, after which the dooris swung open with the mechanism set as in Fig. 16. When the lock bolt has been re tracted the coin slot 38 will have been closed by the shutter and the arm 111 will have tilted the head 109 so as to be in proper position for operating the counter. The outside knob or handle may now be released which permits action of the spring 42 and the lock bolt to be thereby projected, the arm 91 being carried back by means of the spring and turning the knob to its original position, the
