IMPROVEMENT IN STITCH-RIPPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,336, dated J une 8, 1875; application tiled May 4, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEO. ST. GEORGE, Jr., of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Stitch-Ripper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the lart to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.l

My invention relates to a method of separating or ripping seams sewed either by machine or hand. It consists in a cone and handle, which are so constructed that the cone will be stiifened, cannot be opened, and a channel is formed for the bar which carries the knife or blade. It also consists in rendering the knife adjustable for various kinds of work. It also consists in a guard for pre` venting cutting of the fabric.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a cone or conical shaped stock, which is connected to a holder or handle,B, and has an opening, O, in the length thereof. In forming the cone A, a piece of metal or material is bent into shape, and the ends thereof continued inwardly toward the center of the cone, so as to form tongues b b, and said tongues are depressed laterally near the surface of the cone, to form a channel, a. The handle B is pointed or L-shaped at one end to correspond to the cone A, and a slit, d, is formed in said handle in the longitudinal direction thereof. D represents a knife or blade, which is iitted to a holder, K, whose shank passes through the opening C, and is connected to a feed-bar, which is fitted in the channel a, and has au adjustable .sliding motion therein, and also plays in a slot or channel in the handle, which latter carries the mechanism by which the adjusting motions of the bar and knife are imparted. L represents lips, which project from the sides of the knife, and act as guards to prevent cutting of the fabric.

It will be seen that when the parts are in position the walls or sides of the slit d of the handle embrace tongues b and channel a, and they thus serve to stiften the cone, prevent opening thereof, and strengthen the channel a, which forms a way for the feed-bar. The knife may be readily moved nearer to or farther from the point of the cone, to meet the requirements of various kinds of work, as will be hereinafter stated.

The method of operating my invention is as follows: In closed seams or hems, the point of the cone is inserted in the hem, bringing the thread directlyin line with the knife. The cloth being then pulled over the cone, the seam partially separates, and the thread, striking the knife, is cut, the knife being iirst set in the cone according to the size of the seam. In case of open seams, or two pieces of cloth sewed together, the knife is set back to the base of the cone; the cloth is then pulled backward and slightly downward, as before.

The advantage of this particular device over any heretofore in use or now used consists in partially separating the edges of the seams by means of the cone, and then bringing the thread continuously tothe knife 5 also, in the adjusting of the knife to diiierent-sized seams; also, in the guard provided for preventing the knife from cutting the cloth.

I claim as my inventionl. The cone A, formed with the opening C and channel a, in combination with the slit handle B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v

2. The combination, with the cone, of the knife D, having au adjustable or sliding movement on the cone, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The guard-lips L, in combination with the knife D, substantially as and for the pur-- pose set forth.
