My invention relates toimprovements in Windmills, and the elojert of the invention is to devise a 'siu'ipleyeesy runniug'emr nple struotionot vindinill 'Whiel'r will he and eheup to eonrsitruet and it consist sentiully oili-the arrangement and eons more per tion oi parts us hereiim lter 1erly{ e-rpl eined.

var thepesitionthey assume when in the inoperative position, that to soy, edgevvise in the wind.
l i' the'd innings like eharueters ot retereuee indicate correspondiug parts in each figure.
1 indieutes the Windmill heed hese upon which. is mounted the main shaft 52 carrying the CTOSS arms 3 and 4-, such cross ern being secured to the shaft 2 by means of the enlargenieuts 5 and 6t i 7 is it collar slidehle upon the shatt 2 end ni'eVeuted from rotating thermn by means oi? u depending pin 8 extending through an orifice Qxtormed in the hose 1.
T he collar 7 is provided with an annular groove 7*. 7 1O rind 11 are the vene supporting frames. Each oi? the frames and ii comprises a vertical portion 10*, extending through the mtremities of the arms 3 and 4e and depend in from the lower arm and provided with an upturned inwardly inclined portion termiuutiugg in a vertical portion 13 extend-- iue' through the arms 8 and 4t intermediotely of their length. .l-Il: ore Windmill vanes provided with horizontal bars 15 1G and 17, svvung upon the vertical portion 1O ot' the frames ill) and 11 intermediately of their length or 1 a point intermediate between the centre oi the Serial No. 683,23 5.

The link 18 is provided inte 'n'iedietely of its lengrth with en upwardly o'lt se-tportiou The rod fad-extends freely through a lug 20* extending); from the enlargement 6'. The rod 230 extends 1| pivard and is provided at its upper end with an eye E22 through which the. shaft 52 extends, ijl'it) eye 22 is normally located direeti'y above the enlarge ment; (5, the collar 7 being located below sue-h enlargement so as to slide ireely vertiez liy upward upon the she-it mend from theenlaivrenient hen the vents are set in the inoperative position or edgexvise in the Wind* the recess torn'ie'd by the (iii-set portion 19 is direetly above the horizontal portion of the rod 20 so that when the rod 20 is raised it enterssueh reeess -und holds the vanes definitely in their inoperative posit-ion. In orde to ele ote the eolhr T and the rot 2t) earried thereby I provide it depending rod 23 extending dtuvnvvhrd through the hose 1, to a suitable loeetion to be 111211 uelly operated.
When it is desired to operate tl1ewvindwill the rod is pulled downward so as to carry the rod 20 out of the recess: formed by the oft-set portion 19. The une 141-? then swings into the Wind, that is to say, so that the wind pressure operates; in the dime tion of arrow A. it
The vene is operetedupon hy the Wind pressure in the position shown in Fin. 2, rotating the windmill in the. direction oi arrow B the vane 1d t'evelling; edgeivise against the wind until the wind pressure is exerted upon the tore thereof as it up preaches the position of the one l t illustruted in Fig.2. 2.

What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a windmill head, the combination with the main shaft and a journal support therefor, of an upper and lower cross arm set diametrically and mounted centrally upon the windmill shaft, a rectangular vane pivotally mounted at points adjacent its upper edge and centre upon the extremities of the aforesaid bars and at each end thereof and in such a position as to provide a short vane arm extending in one direction, and a long vane arm extending in the opposite di rection, the 'anes being also set oppositely in directions one to the other, a link connecting the long arms of the vanes together, and manually controlled means for adjusting the vanes into and out of the wind.
2. In a windmill head, the combination with the main shaft and journal support therefor, of an upper and lower cross arm set diametrically and mounted centrally upon the windmill shaft, a rectangular vane pivotally mounted at points adjacent its upper edge and centre, upon the extremities of the aforesaid bars and at each end thereof and in such a position as to provide a short vane arm extending in one direction and a long vane arm extending in the opposite direction. and spaced apart intermediately of the windmill vane to form an intervening opening between the arms, the vanes being also set oppositely in direction one to the other, a link connecting the long arms of the vanes together, and manually controlled means for adjusting the vanes into and out of the wind. v
3. In a windmill head, the combination with the main shaft and a journal support therefor, of cross arms carried centrally of their length by the main shaft, rectangular vane members swung upon the ends of the cross arms at the side of the centre remote from the windward edge, a link connection extending between the vanes adjacent to their windward edge, an annular collar carried by the main shaft, a pin depending downwardly from the collar extending treely through an orifice in the journal support a rod having an annular lower portion fitting the groove of the collar, an annular upper portion surrounding the main shaft and adapted to be moved vertically so as to engage the recess formed by the oil-set ot the link.
t. In a windmill head, the combination with the main shaft and journal support therefor, of an upper and lower cross arm set diametrically and mounted upon the windmill shaft, a rod bent into U shape having its base inclined upward and having its arms extending through the cross arms at each end at points adjacent their extremities and centre so that the long arm of the U depends below the lower cross arm, a rectangular vane pivotally mounted upon the long arm of the U at points adjacent to the extremities of the cross arms and the lower extremity of the long arm of the U, and in such a position as to provide a short vane arm extending in one direction and a long vane arm extending in the opposite direction, the vanes being also set oppositely in direction one to the other, a link connecting the long arms of the vanes together, and manually controlled means for adj usting the vanes into and out of the wind.
