ARTHUR L. BREITENSTEIN, OF AKRON, OHIO.
sorssons sHARrEnER.
1 Application filed February 29, 1924. Serial No. 695,985.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. BREITEN- STEIN, a citizen of the UnitedStates. and'a resident of Akron, county of Summit, State 5 of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a simple device by means of which scissors or shears may be quickly and accurately sharpened, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a device of the character which is simple and inexpensive in construction and so designed that in use the scissors will be accurately sharpened upon their angular faces.
In the drawings isshown one form only of the invention, it being understood that other forms may be devised within the scope of the appended claims- In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a View of the device with the two blades of the scissors shown in section and in position for use, and
Fig. 2 is a View at right angles to Fig. 1 showing the scissors in side view.
In the manufacture of the preferred form of the invention, which is illustrated here, a strip of flat steel or other metal is provided which is bent in general U-shape to form a handle having arms 1 and 2. The arm 1 is provided with an extension 3 which is bent reversely or toward the handle portion so that its outer surface 3 is in line with the inner surface 2 of the arm 2. When the scissors are placed in position for sharpening, the surfaces 2 and 3 operate as bearing surfaces of the flat sides of the scissor blades.
The arm 2 is provided wit-h a lateral offset 40 portion 4, and in this portion and the arm 1,
in position so that it the handle, is arranged the abrading or sharpening element 5: at the correct angle to the surfaces 2 and 3*. The part 5 may be of any suitable substance, p 'eferably hardened and roughened steel. g
In the operation of the evice the user inserts the part 5 between the blades of the shears, and with the flat surfaces of the blades against the surfaces 2 and 3*, moves the device in and out of the shears opening and closing them during the process. The
guiding surfaces and the angular arrangespans the opening 0-fment of the element 5 insure ing of the scissor blades.
The invention is'capable of embodiment in different forms from that specifically shown and described, and the claims should therefore be construed to cover such modifications.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a scissor sharpener comprising a single strip of flat metal, the major portion of which is formed as a U-shaped handle, a piece of abrading material extending across the outer end of the handle, and an extension on one arm of the handle, the outer surface of which is parallel to the inner surface of the opposite arm of the handle.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a scissor sharpener comprising a piece of metal, the major portion of which is bent upon itself to form a U-shaped handle, a piece of abrading material fastened in one arm of the handle and extending across the a proper grindhandle and secured in the other arm, the
second arm having a re-versely bent extension parallel to the first-named arm and forming therewith bearing surfaces for the flat sides of the scissor blades.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a scissor sharpener comprising a piece of flat metal, a. portion of which is bent upon itself to form a U-shaped handle. one arm of said handle, having an extension bent upon itself 'so as to be parallel with the other arm of the handle, and a piece of abrading material secured in the handle at an angle to the arms.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a scissor sharpener comprising a strip of flat metal, a portion of which is bent upon itself to form a U-shaped handle. a lateral offset in one arm of the handle, the other arm of the handle being provided with an extension which is reversely bent toward the handle, the outer surface of the extension and the inner surface of the first-named arm constituting bearing surfacesfor the flat sides of scissor blades, and a piece of abrading material arranged at an angle to said bearing surfaces and secured and in the second-named arm.
ARTHUR L. BREITENSTEIN.
