JDO (JR-'OPENINGXEVICE -Appncaaonniea nay @ofrece fsernnnfivraeeo,
To @ZZ e0 7i0nait-mayconcern Bezit Eknown" that I,g Enna Rien-D, a citizen of the United estates,residing-at"Sundance, -inathe countyA o'ffGroo-knand #State of "Wyoming, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in llDeor-@pening lDevices, of-which the 'iollowing is especification.
"This `invention relates to 'new and useful improvementsiin attachments fforfdoors, and ihas fior v:its ip rincipal -object to fprow'fifde a Vmeans 4for releasing lthe vlatch jfrom lloc-hed engagement vwtihthe keeper, whereby TLthe door inayL be Iopenedfflov the foot off r person whose .hands are` occupied.
One'of the important objects ofl the invention is to t provide a Jfoot controlled .door opening. `device Aof-fthe aboveunentioned character, which mayl loeeeasilyand-readily` placed iin position on anydoorfand fastened tofy the ilatchff thereior.
lpart of the speeicatiomianclin which like ,numerals designate 1like jparts throughout the same:
Figure-1 is a side-elevation ofmyfimproved invention,:showing thesamefin1=n posi- "tion Aon adoor. u
Figure is a sectional view, taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar view, taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the crank lever supported onthe upper end of the operating rod.
Figure 5 is a sectional View, taken ap-V proximately on the line 5-5 or Figure 8.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of a door, showing a toe plate mounted thereon, and
Figure 7 is a modification of a door latch engaging means.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral -1 designates a door, which is preferably ofl the swinging type,1 and is provided with the iusuel `door latch 1.12, :and zthe deer knob 3 I herefor. :My vdoor reopening vdevice comrprises z an i elongated Yvertieal rod A'4, Awhich f is 'supported in the upper :and ilo-wer :brackets l5 and 6: respectively,ithe-latter beingfseeured fto `the-door ononesidethereof, in anysuitable., manner. The Vlaterally extending portion of the crank lever 7 is fprovlded `wwith an AQpening ,10,in-whichiis received an endiofithehori- :zon-tally disposed -ro'd i1i1,vfandthe :opposite `fend'L oii'itlresrod flllfis i providediivitha hook 12 Lrfor engagement with [the i army'portion 13 of c the clamping .member I .designated l; generally .The clamping member ,:14fis adapted :to
For the purpose of actuating the vertical rod 4 and the clamping member 14, which is connected to the knob on the left, I provide the lower end of the verticalv rod 4, below the bracket 6, with the foot engaging lever 20. The. foot engaging lever isclamped aroundV presses inwardly on the foot lever 1l, caus-' ing the vertical rod fl to rotate inthe brackets 5 land G, and simultaneously causing the crank lever 7 to aetuate the horizontally disposed rod 1l and the clamping ineniber 14 connected thereto and extending around the knob, so as to cause the clamping ineinber to disengage the latch frein its keeper, whereby the door niay be swung to an open position. To facilitate the swinging of the door to an open position, the toe plate 2l is provided, and the saine is of such a construction as to enable a person to either press in* wardly on the toe plate, or place his toelbe tween the plate and the door, in order to exert a pull on the door, so that the saine niay be opened. i
In Figure 7 of the drawing, ainodilicatioii is shown, wherein the door is provided with thuinb latch 22, and the knob 23 therefor,
and as the. saine is of the well known con.V
struction, a further detailed description of the saine is not thoughtV necessary. For openin' ar dooriprovided with a latch of this construction, I provide the saine operating means as heretofore set forth, withA the e2:-A ception that instead of the clainping ineinber lil, which engages. the knob, I provide the bell crank lever 24 which is pivoted at 25 to the door, and has one endthereof slotted to engage the knob 23 ofthe thuinb lock, while the opposite end is provided with an eye 2G, for engagement with the hooked end of the horizontally disposed rod 1l.
rlhe operation in releasing the thuinb nut,
however, is identical with that heretofore described.
It will thus be seen frein the foregoing description, that a door opening device has been provided, which is siinple in construction, inexpensive, and the parts are so arranged as to enable the saine to be readily and easily actuated by the footA of a person, when a persons hands are occupied. An attachment of thischaracter inay be placed upon screen doors or other doors, without necessitating the alteration of the door, in installing the attachment in position tuereon, and furthermore the device will be strong and durable.
i/Vhile I have` shownA the preferred enibodiinent of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of parts, inay be inade, withoutV departing frein the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.V
Having thus described niy invention, what I claini is:
l. In conibination with a swinging dooi and a latch therefor, of nieans vfor releasing said latch froin a locked position, coinprising a vertical rod rotatably supported on said door, a crank` lever detachably supported on the upper end of said rod, a connection between said crank lever and the knob of said latch, and a foot actuated lever on the lower end of the vertical rod.
2. In combination with a swinging door and a latch therefor, of ineans for releasing the latch from a locked position, comprising a vertical rod rotatably supported on said door, a crank lever detachably supported on the upper end of said rod, a clainping' ineinber for the knob of said latch, a connection between said clainping nieniber and said crank lever, said clamping ineinber coinprising a pair of eoinpleinentary sections detachably engagedwith said knob, and a foot actuated lever on the lower end of said rod.
Y In testimony whereof I afhx iny signature.
