To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK J OAOHIM, a citizen of United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hospital Wagons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in structures for supporting the body of a person in a recumbent position and has as one of its objects to provide a cot or narrow bed with means whereby it may be easily moved about from place to place without disturbing the user.

Another purpose is to produce a cot that is unusually comfortable, having a spring supported elastic mattress and means for elevating and supporting the head and shoulders at an adjustable angle to the main mattress.

A further aim is in the provision of means whereby the central supporting wheels may be removed and their attaching elements folded closely below the mattress, under the cot frame.

These and other aims, objects and purposes which will become apparent as the description progresses, are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention extended at length ready for use.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View, taken on line 33 of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawing more in detail the numeral 10 designates a pair of posts of the ordinary tubular type as used at the 1 head portion of a bed or cot, the same terminat-ing as usual at their upper ends with ornamental knobs 11 and are further provi ded at their lower ends with castors 12.

Said legs are held firmly in spaced par allel relation by a rod 13 near their lower ends and a similar rod 14 at a point higher up, while between these rods are others, respectively 15 and 16 corresponding in position to the upper and lower members of the cot frame.

This arrangement permits the loop 26 to be disengaged from the catcher and the leg 24 folded upward, allowing the cot to be moved with entire freedom.

A pair of tie rods 28 are attached to the cross rods 16 and 21 on each side of the cot, these rods being bent to present central level portions 28, which are engaged on the lower sides by similar cross rods 29, fixed at their ends to the side bars 18 and bent to present flat level elements 29, the same reenforcing the elements 28..

Resting on the intersections of these sup portelements are the lower ends of conically wound spiral springs 30, their flattened upper ends forming seats for the woven wire or other fixed mattress 31, said mattress being engaged at its side edges to the bars 18, at the foot to the rod 20 and at the head to a rod 32.

A pair of angularly disposed supports 40 are hingedly attached to the frame bar 18, their converging ends being fixed in bearings 41 carrying an axle 42 having at its ends pneumatically cushioned wheels 43, the periphery of which is substantially in the plane of the castors 12 and leg 24:.

By removing the wheels and axle the supports can be folded out of the way and the cot used in the ordinary manner, while on the other hand, when the wheels are in the position shown the device can be used for transporting an invalid with comfort, it heing understood that the leg 24 is folded when the wheels are used.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I A hospital COt having a rigid frame, a mattress'supported thereby, a plate inclinable to act as a continuation of said mattress, an adjustable clamping device, for angu'larly elevating the head end of said mattress, rods attached longitudinally and transversely to said frame to extend below said mattress, conically wound spiral springs carried at the intersections of said rods, and forming seats for supporting the mattress, a h'ingedly attached leg at the foot of said frame, and a pair of removable wheels at the center of said frame.
