CAR DOOR.
Application filed August 23, 1922. Serial No. 583,856.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mullinville, in the county of Kiowa and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grain doors, and contemplates a door made up of a plurality of independent sliding sections designed to be associated to provide a leak proof closure, and capable of being singly moved within a housing arranged at one side of the door opening, each section being provided with a centralop-ening normally covered by a sliding closure adapted to be opened prior to the moving of said sections within the housmg.
In carrying out the invention, I also provide means for holding the auxiliary closure immovable in its normal position, while each section is equipped with means to facilitate movement of the section from the housing to its active position.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view, showing the door in its closed position.
I Figure 2 is a view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation and having parts broken away.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the door sections.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Figure 4. showing the auxiliary closure of said section opened.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates the side of a car body having the usual door opening 11, and arranged at one side of this door opening is a housing 12 adapted to receive the respective sections of the door forming the subject matter of the present invention. It will be noted 7 door section.
that this door is made up of a number of sections arranged in superimposed relation, each section being capable of independent sliding movement, and adapted to be positioned within the housing 12 when not in use. The housing is divided by partitions 13 into separate compartments, or in other words. to provide a compartment for each At the opposite side of the door opening, I provide a flanged member 14 between wh ch and the body of the car 10, the adjacent ends of the door sections are arranged when the door is closed.
Each door section 15 is of elongated contour and is preferably constructed of wood reinforced by metal plates 16 secured to the opposite sides of the door section, and these metallic plates project an appreciable distance beyond the lower edge of its section to embrace the adjacent longitudinal edge of the next section, in a manner so that when all of the sections are extended across the door opening, they unitedly define a leak proof closure. Each section is cut away along one edge obliquely as at 17 to permit the sections to be easily manipulated in order to position the sections within the housing 12 as the occasion requires. Secured to the open end of the housing 12 is a plate 17, which prevents the contents of the car from gaining access to the housing 12, while each door section supports a plate 18, which constitutes a stop for the door section to limit the outward movement of said section, the plate 18 being arranged to contact the plate 17 when the door section is extended for use. Arranged within the housing 12 is a plurality of spaced pins 19 which are engaged by the inclined edges 17 formed on the reinforcing plates of each door section to assist in holding the door section in an extended position for use, these plates adjacent the opposite end of the door section being provided with notches 21 which receive similar pins 22 arranged between the body 10 of the car and the flanged member 14.
Each door section proper is provided with an exit opening 22', and the reinforcing plates are cut away about this opening as at 23. This exit opening is normally closed by a sliding closure 24 which forms part of the door section proper, and is arranged to slide between the reinforcing plates to uncover the opening as the occasion requires. When this closure 2; is in its normal position. it is held against movement by a pivoted latch carried by the closure and arranged to engage a shoulder 26 formed on the door section proper. Prior to the movement of any door section from its closed position to its opened position Within the housing 1:2, the auxiliary closure 24: is opened to permitthe escape of grain through said opening and thereby relieve the said door section from the pressure oi the grain to an extent which will facilitate the openin of the door section as will be readily understood.
Each door section is cut away at its tor- Wa-rd end. and operating in this cut away portion is a sn'iall handle 27 which is pivoted between the reinforcing plates and noruially arranged to lie between said plates. This handle is provided to facilitate removal of the eoor section from the housing 12. and when its use is desired, it is swung on. its pivot to extend beyond the adjacent end of the door section in a position Where it can be conveniently gripped for the pur pose stated.
lYhile it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent,
I desire to have it understoodthat 1 do not limit myself to What is herein shown and de scribed, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of What is claimed.
What I claim is The combination With a structure having a door opening, of a casing arranged at the side or the door opening and having its tor-Ward longitudinal edge open, a plurality ct parallel angnlarly disposed partitions arranged in the casing, a plurality of slidable panels adapted to extend transversely across the door opening. and together provide a door, the rear edges oi the panels being eveled, pins arranged at the forward end of the casing whereupon engagement of the same by the inclined edges of the panels the latter will be raised and upon continuous inorement ot' the panels toward the casing the panels will be elevated onto the respectire partitions, the forward ends of the panels being provided with notches adapted to engage the pins whereby to lock the panels in the casing.
in testimony whereof I aflix iny signa tnre.
WILLIAM A. MORRIS.
