Description
J. KITCH ELL SEAL Filed Aug, s, 1923 TEE-=1...
51 IfiicYlaZZ lit) Patented Dec. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH KITCHELL, OF VINCENNES, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS H. ADAMS, OF VINCENNES, INDIANA.
l SEAL.
Application filed August 8, 1923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosnPH KrrorinLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seals; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in seals for packages, freight cars and other purposes, the object being to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive, yet an easily operable and reliable device for effectively connecting the ends of a sealing wire.
lVith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a seal constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a disassembled perspective.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. l is a transverse sectional view on line lft of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a slightly different form of construction.
In carrying out my invention, I preferably make use of a cylindrical casing wall 1 having end walls 2 and 3 secured therein in an desired manner, each of said walls, in the present disclosure, being formed with a slightly olf center opening at through which one end of a sealing wire 5 may be passed as shown in Fig. 3, said walls being preferably beveled to some extent to facilitate insertion of the wire. The other end of the wire 5 is anchored to the casing wall 1 in any suitable manner, for instance by passing said end through an open ing 6 and forming a head 7 upon it.
Held within the casing, in a plane parallel with the end walls 2 and S, is a disk 8 having an opening 9 substantially alined with the openings 4, the edge of this opening being by preference beveled to insure easy insertion of the wire therethrough. This disk carries a wire biting tongue indicated by the numeral 10 in Figs. 2, 3 and.
Serial No. 656,534.
l, and shown at 10 in Fig. 5, the tongue 10 being secured to the disk by a rivet 11, while the tongue 10 is integral. with the peripheral edge of the disk. In either instance, the tongue lies at the side of the disk adjacent the end wall 3 and is provided with a sharpened inner end 12.
lVhen the wire 5 is passed through the opening 4- of the end wall 3 and forced against the tongue 10, this tongue is sprung to some extent into the opening 9 as illustrated in Fig. 3, permitting the wire to be further inserted to the required extent and passed on through the opening 4c of the end wall 2. Any attempt to pull the wire reversely, will result in tight biting thereof by the sharpened end 12 of the tongue 10 and consequently removal of the wire from the casing is prevented.
Obviously, my invention is simple and inexpensive, yet will be a very efiicient and reliable seal for freight car doors, packages, etc.
As excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed, they may be followed if desired, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim l. A device of the class described. comprising a hollow casing having one of its ends provided with an aperture which is of smaller area than the hollow portion of the casing, a wire anchored at one end to said casing and adapted to have its other end passed through said aperture, a disk disposed transversely in the hollow portion of said casing and having an opening alined with said aperture to receive the last mentioned end of said wire, and a wire biting tongue carried by said disk and projecting partially across said opening.
2. A seal comprising a casing closed at both ends and having alined openings in said ends, a wire anchored at one end to the casing and adapted to have its other end passed through said openings, a disk in said casing having an opening alined with the aforesaid openings to receive the wire, and a wire biting tongue carried by said disk and projecting partially across its opening.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
JOSEPH KITCHELL ltll)
