CLIMBING DEVICE.
Application filed January 8, 1924. Serial No. 684,922.
To all what/2. it may concern Be it known that I, SnBAsTLiN AGUILAR, a citizen of Mexico, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Climbing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pole climbing means intended for use in connection with poles carrying telegraph, telephone, or other wires, the invention having for an object the provision of a novel device of this sort which will permit of the pole being readily climbed and enable the lineman to provide a secure footing for himself at any point where he desires.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in wh ch the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the drawing reference numeral 10 indic'ates an ordinary pole such as is used in carrying telegraph or telephone wires. Extending up opposite sides of this pole are channeled members such as 11, which have inturned flanges 12 on their outer sides which retain slide members therein, these members 11 being open at the bottom for insertion of the said slide members. These slide members are in the form of boxes such as 15 which fit freely in the channeled members and are provided with grooved elements 16 which engage the flanges 12. Projecting rigidly from the face of each box is a pintle 18 on which is freely mounted a footplate 19 provided with a number of straps 20 whereby it may be secured to the foot of the lineman.
Mounted in each box 15 in juxtaposed position with relation to one another is a pair of rollers 23 which are fixed on trunnions 2 1 which project through horizontal slots 25 in the sides of the box, whereby the rollers may move toward and away from one another, apertures 26 being formed in the ends of the box to permit of the rollers projecting there.- from to engage the walls of the guide 11, the surfaces of these rollers being roughened to grip the said walls of the guide.
These rollers are adapted to be forced into engagement with the walls of the guide by means of a wedge shaped member 30 which is fixed at its large end to a plate 31 verti cally movable in the box 15 above the rollers, the member projecting downward between the rollers. Located between the plate 31 and the top of the box are the expansion springs 32 which tend to force the wedge 30 between the rollers.
Fixed to the top of the plate 31 and extending freely upward through a suitable guide aperture in the top of the box 15 is a bar 33 which has its upper end outturned between the fianges 12 as at 33. To this bar is fixed the lower end of a telescopic rod which comprises the solid lower member 35 and the hollow upper member 36 which may be secured to one another in adjusted positions by the screw 37 passing through the upper member and bearing on the lower member. Fixed to the upper end of the member 86 is a spindle 38 on which is mounted a roller 39 which engages freely in the guide member 12.
As will be apparent by pulling upward on the rod 35, 36, the wedge 30 is drawn back from its operative position and the rollers 23 are unlocked, the lineman then raising the whole device until the foot occupies the desired new position, release of the rod: causing the springs 32 to force the wedge between the rollers and so lock the latter to the guide 11.
To permit of the wedge 30 being rigidly locked in its operative position between the rollers I may arrange the parts as shown in F 10. As there shown lower element 35 of the telescopic rod. is screwed at its lower end into an offset 412 from the plate 31 which ill) projects forwardly through a vertical slot 43 in the box lathe plate being shown as formed with a peripheral guide flange 44:. Fixed to the rod 35 above the offset 42 is a collar 45 which is adapted to bear. against an offset 46 from the box when the rod is rotated in a direction to unscrew it from the part 12. In this arrangement the rod element is formed at its upper end with a. number of peripheral grooves: 46 to re ceive the screw 37. When it is desired to lock the wedge in operative position the screw 37 is slightly loosened and the rod 35 is rotated by hand until the collar bears on the member e6, thus holding the wedge 30 in lowered position.
The top rod element 36 may have an apertured ear 1-9 formed thereon to receive a hook on the end oi a strap 50 attached to the belt 51 of the lineman as shown in Fig. 1. In Fig. 9 the channeled guide member 11 is secured on the periphery oi? pole 10.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In combination with a pole, and a vertical guide element in said pole, a member engaged with said guide element and adapted to have the foot of the user attached thereto, devices carried by said member for gripping the said guide element, a part in said member for moving said devices to operative position, and a handle element for said part extending upward from the latter above the said member, and a roller on the upper end of said handle element engaging in said guide element.
2. In combination with a pole, and a vertical guide element in said pole, a member engaged with said guide element and adapted to have the foot of the user attached thereto, devices carried by said member for gripping the said guide element, a part in said member for moving said devices to operative position, and a. handle element for said part extending upward from the latter above the said member, and a roller on the upper end off said handle element engaging in said guide element, said handle element being in the form of telescopic rod.
3. In combination with a pole, and a vertical guide element on said pole, a box engaged with said guide element, a tootplate carried by said box, a pair of juxtaposed rollers mounted in said box for movement into and out of engagement with the said guide element, a wedge movable in said box and adapted to engage between the said rollers, and resilient means retaining said wedge in operative position between said rollers.
4:. In combination with a pole, and a. vertical guide element on said pole, a box engaged with said guide element, a. tootplate carried: by said box, a pair of juxtaposed rollers mounted in said box for movement into and out 01 engagement with the said guide element, a wedge movable in said box and adapted to engage between the said rollers, and resilient means retaining said wedge in operative position between said rollers, and a handle element attached to said wedge for moving it from operative engagement with said rollers.
5. In, combination with a pole, and a vertical guide element on said pole, a box engaged with said guide element, a footplate carried by said box, a pair of juxtaposed rollers mounted in said box for movement into and out of engagement with the said guide element, a. wedge movable in said box and adapted to engage between the said rollers, and resilient means retaining said wedge in operative position between said rollers, said resilient means comprising springs bearing on said wedge.
6. In combination with a pole, and a ver tical guide element on said pole, a box engaged with said guide element, a footplate carried by said box, a pair of juxtaposed rollers mounted in said box for movement into and out of engagement with the said guide element, a wedge movable in said box and adapted to engage between the said rollers, and resilient means for retaining said wedge in operative position between said and means for locking said wedge in operative position between said rollers.
7. In combination with a pole, and a ver tical guide element on said pole a box engaged with said guide element, a tootplate carried by said box, a pair of juxtaposed rollers mounted in said box for movement into and out of engagement wit-h the said guide element, a wedge movable in said box and adapted to engage between the said rollers, and resilient means for retaining said wedge in operative position between said rollers, and a handle element attached to said wedge for moving it from operative engagement with said rollers, said handle element having a screw thread engagement with said wedge and being adapted by rotation to loclr the wedge in operative posi tion.
