Be it known thatI, ANNEUs ELLINCsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andV i I a construction' of this kind which is easily taken down or assembled for shipping in a knockdownlcondition; to provide a suitably braced and strengthened block for the attachment to the legs without danger of splitting the block,v and for holding the legs iirmlyin place; to provide improved fastening means for the lock and the upright Vor pedestal piece; and in general, to produce a device of the-construction herein shown and described.

In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is an elevation of a costumer or clothes'rack constructed in` accordance with the principles of thisinvention; Fig. 2 is a detail view of the base block and the lower end of the upright piece; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line L.le-11 of Fig. 2; Figp isak cross section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a section taken on theV line 6-6 of Fig.l3.

In illustrating this invention a clothes rack is shown with an upright post 1 to which clothes hooks 2 are attached at the upper end. This post is preferably made of sections 3 as shown in Fig. 2 with the joints at the corners so that the grain of the'wood will appear to the best advantage on the outside faces. Near the, lower end a core 4l is inserted formed with a bore 5 opening from the lower end thereof so that a fastening bolt 6 may be inserted in the core.v At a distance from the lower end ofthe core a slot 74is made in one side thereof before it is inserted in the post and a nut 8 is placed therein, the nut sealed in place -by a small cut out block 9 so that the nut will be held against rotation for receiving the threaded end of the bolt 6.

A base block 10 slightly larger than the cross section of the post 1 is formed out of three pieces of material of substantially equal width glued or otherwise fastened together and strengthenedl transversely by dowel pins 11 and 12 which are also preferably glued to `the piecesforming the block, as close to the bottom as practical. At the middle of each rectangular'face ofthe block is a dove-tailed groove 13 Vwhich extends upwardly fromthe bottom of the block to a point. below the `top thereof where the groove is slightly undercut. `The dowel` pins 11 and -12 are located vclose to the inner edges of the dove-tailed grooves so that the grooves are strengthened materially by the dowels. Seated in the upper vend of thisV block 10 are vdowel pins '14 which are adapted to be inserted in corresponding openings 15 at the lower end of the post 1. l

For each dove-tailedlgroove there is a leg or foot'piece 16 which has a dove-tailed tenon 117 adapted to lit closely in the groove 13. The foot piece is inserted from the bottom of the block` and abuts the undercut portion at the top thereof making a close t and with a shoulder 18 fitting tightly against the outer face of the block and neatly covering the face of the block as well as the groove therein. When actually secured in place, the legs 16 are preferably glued in the grooves 13.. so that the block 10 and the legs 16 are removable from the post as a unit.

Through the middle of the block 10 is a hole 19 through which the ybolt 6 is inserted from the bottom for engagingthe nut 8 in the post7 and'if desired, ithe vwasher 2O at the'underside of the block may bein the form-0f aplate which 4engages beneath the under edges of the legs 16 for additionally holding them in their 'grooves 13. i"

With this construction yit is apparent lthat the base may bevery easily detached from the post 1 for shipping purposes, and if desired, the legs 16'mav even be separated from the base b-lock 10. By making the base block of sectional vconstruction and bracing the edges of the dove-tailed slots with the dowel f pins, a very strongvconstruction is provided which is not liable to become damaged or broken even if considerable weight is applied to the device. Furthermore, even though this supporting base construction is described as applied to a clothes rack, it is apparent that it could be used equally well with many'other articles of furniture which require a stron-g' supporting base Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

l claim:

l'. ln a structure of the class described, a removable base block formed of sec-tions of material secured together, a. plurality of arms having a dove-tailed groove and tenon connection With and extending outwardly from the base block, and dotvel pins for reinforcing the base block at'the sides of the connection and at right. angles to each one of the arms.

2. ln a structure of the class described, a removable base block having a fastening groove in each one of a plural-ity of angular faces, arms each with, a tenon engageable in one of the grooves, and doive'l pins eX- tending through the block for strengthening it directly at the sides of the groove.

3. ln a'v structure' of the class described, a base blockcomposed of sections-secured together and having a dove-tailed groove' in each of a plurality of angular faces, an arm for each face having a' dove-tailed tenon to fit the groove, and reenforcing' doWel pins extending 'through' the block at the sides of each groove.v

l. lnv a construction of the class described, the combination with a sectional base block having groovedA outer faces, of supporting members radiating therefrom each having a dove-tailed ten'onl at the inner end, doWel pins extending transversely through the block at the sides of the grooves to' strengthen block, a sectional-upright member to which the block is attachably secured, the block being formed With al central hole therethrough, the upright member being formed with an opening at its end, av threaded nut embedded in one section of the upright member at a distance from the end but in line with thc. end opening therein, and' a fastening bolt insel-table through the hole in the block and engaging with the threaded member.

ln a structure of the class described, a post, al solid sectional b-ase block attachable thereto having a dove-tailed groove eX- tending from` the bottom edge of each angular face, a plurality of arms each havthe ing a dove-tailed tenoir engageabl'e in one of the grooves, doWel pins at the sides of the grooves to strengthen the block fastening means including a bolt extending from the underside of the block into the post, and a plate between the head of the bolt and the bottom of the block engageable With the under face of the said tenons for additionally holding them in the grooves.

6. ln a` furniture base block of the class described, the combination with three connected sections forming four substantially equal outer faces with a dove-tailed groove extending freni the lower edge of each face, tivo pairs' of doivel pins extending entirely through the block at right angles to each other, each` pair being located adjacent the lower edge of the blockr andv as close to the edges of the grooves als possible Without entering' the grooves.
