H. B. SABISTON I SERVING TABLE Filed Dc. 23, 1922 Patented Aug. 26, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
SERVING TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HILLAND B. SABISTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vest Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Serving Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tables and has for its object the provision of a novel dining table including a stationary or main member or portion and a rotatable portion mounted upon the main portion, the main portion being designed to hold the plates and other dishes for the diners and the rotatable portion being designed to carry the dishes of food, the advantage being that by turning the rotatable portion the desired dishes of food may be brought in front of each person so that he may help himself.
An important ob ect is the provision of a table of this character in which the rotatable portion is removable whereby the main portion may be used in exactly the same manner as any ordinary table.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, eflicient and convenient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my table with a portion of the rotatable section broken away,
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the entire table,
Figure 3 is a detail section taken through the center and showing the closure plug for filling the bearing socket of the rotatable section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings I have shown my table as comprising a circular main or stationary portion 10 mounted upon the usual legs 11 and pro- 1 vided in the center of its top with a socket 12. I also provide a circular track 13 of any suitable metal recessed into the upper surface and flush therewith.
Application filed December 23, 1922. Serial No. 608,763.
The table also includes a rotatable section 1& which is also circular in shape and which carries at the center of its underside a pivot post 15 bearing within the socket 12. Arranged in circumferential series on the underside of the rotatable section are brackets 16 carrying wheels 17 so arranged as to roll upon the track 13.
In the use of the device plates and the like are placed upon the lower section 10 outwardly of the section 14 while the dishes of food are placed on the rotatable section 14. As this section 14 may be turned freely it is apparent that access may be had to any of the food thereon Without it being necessary to pass the dishes from hand to hand to effect helping.
In case the table is desired for use in its ordinary capacity, that is like any other table, the rotatable section 14 is merely lifted ofi and the socket 12 is filled by means of a plug 18 having a foldable handle 19 which will lie flat ordinarily.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive table which may be used in the ordinary manner but which has the additional advantage of including a rotatable section which may be turned as desired. Owing to the simplicity of the construction and the fewness of the parts it is apparent that there is nothing to get out of order so that the device should have a long life and satisfactorily perform all of its functions.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj'oined claim.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
Al device of the character described comprising a circular table provided centrally of its top with a flanged socket member let thereinto with the flange seating flush with the table top, a circular track arranged in concentric relation to said socket and let into the table top whereby to be flush therewith, an auxiliary table of circular formation carrying a centrally located depending trunnion rotatably engaged Within said socket, a plurality of Wheeled brackets on the underside of the auxiliary table riding upon said track, said auxiliary table being removable from engagement upon the main table, in combination. with means for c1'0s-" the auxiliary table. 10 r In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HILLAND BURDEN SABIESLTON.
