relates to an ornamental ciated with the cord or chain which is' formed in one piece, for facilitating the guiding of the chain when an article that is attached thereto is being removed from or being placed within a pocket of a vest.

A still further object of my invention resides in the construction and arrangement of the supporting plate, the latter having novel means formed integral therewith for slidably receiving portions of the chain for facilitating the adjustment of the chain therethrough and allowing for the chain to be applied to various sized vests wherein the pockets thereon are positioned at various distances from each other, the front face of the plate being of a peculiar contour and adapted for the reception of a suitable emblem or can be engraved with the initial of the wearer, as desired, thus making the supporting plate ornamental.

A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efiicient in operation and one that an be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.

Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numeralsdesignate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide a cord or chain 1 on one terminal of which is attached an improved retaining device generally designated 2, consisting of a cap 3 for connection with the terminal, the cap having a substantial loop-shaped extension 1 extending therefrom, the latter being in linked connection with an eye 5 carried by a re silient snap ring 6. The snap ring 6 is adapted for removably receiving an article, such as a cigar cutter or cigarette lighter, not shown, which is preferably positioned in the-lower right hand pocket of the usual form of vest. The cord 1 now extends up wardly and is arranged in engagement with my improved supporting plate generally designated 7. The supporting plate in this instance is formed preferably from a piece of sheet metal and is preferably hexagonal shaped in plan as illustrated to advantage in Figure l of the drawings. Extending from alternate edges of the hexagonal shaped plate are a plurality of extensions 8, the latter being rolled inwardly upon themselves and arranged in abutting relation with the under surface of the plate 7 and constitute suitable guides for receiving the cord 1. 'When the chain is applied to a vest the plate 7 assumes a position substantially intermediate the upper of the pockets thereon and the front face thereof may be suitably engraved with the initials of the wearer or may have seals of various lodges, fraternities, colleges or the like applied thereto, thus serving to make the plate ornamenal as well as facilitating the efficient operation of l the cord or chain as a whole.

The cord 1 is extended through one of the lower guides 8, thence in a direction toward the upper right hand pocket of the vest and slidably mounted through the guide plate 9, the latter being substantially square in plan and having its respective edges rolled upon themselves to provide guides '10 for a purpose sin'iilar as the pupose of the plate 7 and guides 8. From the lower of the guides 10 of the plate 9, the cord 1 extends into the upper right hand pocket of a vest, not shown. 'ihereupon it receives a suitable re.- taining means 11 including a plurality of rings 12 arrangel in. linked connection with each other, the lower of which is provided .vith a spring snap arrangement 13 for facilitating the detachable engagement with a suitable article such as a pen or pencil, not suown. After receiving the retaining means '11, the cord is folded upon itself and ex tended through the upper of the guides 10 and the p ate 9 and through the upper of the guides 8 in the plate 7 through the upper guide in the plate 14: which is similar in construction and for purposes similar to the plate 9. From thispoint the cord is extended to tile upper left hand pocket of the vest, not shown, where it receives a suitable retaining means generally designated 15 ineluding a plurality of rings 16 arranged in linked connection with each other, the lower of which are arranged in pivotal engagement with a snap hook 17 preferably adapted for engagement with a watch, not shown, or other personal article. After receiving the improved retaining means 15,-

the cord is bent upon itself and is extended through the lower of the guides in the plate 11 i and the guide 8 on the other side of the plate 7 from whence the cord depends into the lower left. hand pocket in the vest and has connected thereto a retaining means 18 similar in construction to the retaining means 2, which is adapted to receive a pocket knife or other personal article, not shown.

The operation of my invention is as follows:

Assuming that the chain is assembled and positioned in the manner described, it will be readily seen that the plate 7, besides being for ornamental purposes allows for the free sliding movement of the cord through the guides thereon when one of the articles, not shown, has been removed from a pocket of a vest, not shown, thus equalizing the strain on the various portions of the cord.

Furthermore, it is preferable that the plate assume a hexagonal configuration, as the same is clearly illustrated and applied to Figure 1 effects a positioning of the cord that, when assembled facilitates the proper arrangement of the cord. Attention is also directed to the factthat the front faces of the guides 9 and 1 f may be engraved or provided with seals in a manner similar to the manner in which the front face of the plate 7 is finished. If it is desired to apply the chain to a vest of a large or smaller size, it is obvious that the proper positioning of the parts may be obtained by sliding the cord through the guides on the plates '7, 9 and 1 1-.

Although I have shown and described the preferredembodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that I am not to be limited to the exact details shown. Hove ever, great stress should be laid upon the improved means associated with the cord, that is formed in one piece, for facilitating the adjusting of the cord.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it "an easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost.

it will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.

hat is claimed is:

1. A device of the class described comprising a single flexible member folded to form a pair of laterally and oppositely extending double strand extensions and a pair of separate depending'single strand extensions, means engaging said single and double strand extensions for maintaining the flexible member so folded, and an article retaining element on the free end of each of said single and double strand extensions.

2. A- device of the class described comprising a single flexible member folded to form a pair of laterally and oppositely extending double strand extensions and a pair of separate depending single strand extensions, means engaging said single and double strand extensions for maintaining the flexible member so folded, and an article retaining element on the free end of each of said single and double strand extensions, the article retaining elements of the double strand extensions being slidable on the latter, the strands of said single and double strand extensions being slidable through said extension engaging means whereby the single anddouble strand extensions may be relatively lengthened or shortened.

3. A device of the class described comprising a single flexible member folded to form a pair of laterally and oppositely extending double strand extensions and a pair of separate depending single strand extensions, means engaging said single and double strand extensions for maintaining the flexible member so'folded, and an article retaining element on the free end of each of said single and double strand extensions, and

means intermediate the ends of the double strand extensions for maintaining the strands of the latter in adjacent relation.

A device of the class described comprising a single flexible member folded to form a pair of laterally and oppositely extending double strand extensions and a pair of separate depending single strand extensions, means engaging said single and double strand extensions for maintaining the flexible member so folded, and an article retaining element on the free end of each of said single and double strand extensions, the article retaining elements of the double strand extensions being slidable on the latter, the strands of said single and double strand extensions being slidable through said engaging means whereby the single and double strand extensions may be relatively lengthened or shortened, and means intermediate the ends of the double strand extensions for maintaining the strands of the latter in adjacent relation, the strands of the double strand extensions being slidable through said last named means.
