BAGGAGE.
Application filed February 2 Serial No. 6,334,;
My invention relates to devices by which traveling bags or other baggage may be sealed, so that they cannot be opened without breaking the seal.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide the traveling bag or other baggage with means for enabling a seal to be easily and quickly attached to the baggage. Other objects are simplicity of construction and compactness of design.
The invention consists principally in providing the folding frame members of the traveling bag with cooperating members adapted, in the closed position of the folding frame, to be secured together by a sealing device adapted to be broken by opening the bag. The invention consists further in the parts and in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing 'which forms part of this specification, and wherein like symbols refer to like parts whereever they occur, p
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a traveling bag provided with a device embodying my invention, by which the bag may be sealed; and
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical cross-section taken through the folding frame memaers of the bag in the region of the members which receive the sealing device.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown in connection with baggage of the kind known as, traveling bags. A traveling bag A, of which only the upper portion is shown, comprises a folding bag frame composed of two baleshaped sections 3 and A that are secured to the edges of the opening or mouth of the bag and are pivo-tally secured together at their ends, as at 5. The two frame sections 3 and A of the folding bag frame are of substantially angle-shaped cross-section and are arranged to overlap 'or fold one over the other in folded or closed position of the bag. As shown in the drawing, each of the frame sections 3 and 4 comprises horizontally and vertically disposed strips arranged at right angles to each other and rigidly connected together by angle. brackets to form frame members of angle-shaped cross-section. The frame strips are preferably spaced apart to permit of their being covered by leather. ,The bag is also provid ed adjacent to its upper corners with the I usual spring latches 6 for retaining the. hinged frame sections in their closed or folded relation regardless of the locking of the bag.
The folding bag frame is also provided with a locking device of ordinary form comprising a housing 7 which is secured to the vertical frame strip of the upper or outer frame section 3 and supports the mechanism of the lock (not shown), said mecha nism being operable my meansof a pushblock 8, except when it is locked with a key, (not shown) adapted to be inserted in a keyhole 9 provided therefor in said push-block.
The push-block projects upwardly through registering openings in the horizontal frame strip of the upper or outer frame section 3 and a lock-platefllO secured thereon. Secured to the under side of the horizontal frame strip of the inner or lower' frame section is a latch-plate 11 having a pair of perforated lugs or keepers 12 adapted to enter openings provided therefor in the opposing side of the lock housing and engage the lock mechanism which engages the openings in said lugs and thereby retains the bag in closed position. This lock construction is well known and it is considered unnecessary to illustrate it in detail.
The device. by which the bag may be sealed comprises a pair of upstanding perforated ears or-lugs projecting from the frame members 3 and l of the folding bag frame. These lugs are disposed opposite each other in the closed position of the bag. As shown in the drawing, the lugs 13 may be made integral with the keeper-plate 11 and the lock-plate 10 by stamping said plate with perforated tabs adapted to be bent up-- wardly at oblique angles to the'plane of the plates toform said lugs. The bag is sealed by extending a shackle, preferably ,in the form of a wire, band, or cord ll,
through the alined or registering perforations in said lugs 13 and securing the free ends of the shackle by a seal, preferably in the form of a compressible or deformable I disk 15. r
The hereinbefore described arrangement enables the bag to be easily and quickly sealed so that the bag cannot be opened without breaking or rupturing the seal, thus indicating whether it has been tampered with and something removed therefrom.
l hat I claim is: l. A traveling bag having folding bag frame sections and a locking device therefor, said device comprising a lock plate fixed 5 to one 01 said sections and a latch plate fixed to the other of such sections, said lock plate and said latch plate having ears formed integrally therewith, said ears having registering perforations adapted to receive a sealing device.
2. A traveling bag having folding bag frame sections and a locking device therefor, said device including a lock plate fixed to one of said sections and a latch plate fixed to the other of said sections, said lock plate and said latch plate having integrally formed tab portions at their adjacent edges that are bent outwardly and upwardly in opposed relation, said tab portions having registering perforations adapted to receive a sealing device.
Signed at St. Louis, Missouri, this 30th day of January, 1925.
STEPHAN PODMAYER.
