DETACHABLE BACK BEST FOR SEATS.

Application filed December 5, 1925. Serial No. 73,479.

This invention relates to back rests especially adapted for use in connection with row boat seats, circus seats, stadium seats, and the like.

Briefly stated, an important object of this invention is to provide a back rest having simple means whereby the same may be applied to a row boat seat, or the like, without the aid of bolts, nails, or other separate fastening devices, and which may be easily removed from engagement with the seat with a minimum of effort and inconvenience.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a detachable back rest which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use, and cheap to manufacture.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numerals 5 designate a pair of U-shaped seat engaging members consisting of upper and lower straps adapted to engage and embrace a seat 6 of a boat 7, or the like. At this point it might be stated that while the in vention is shown applied to one of the seats of a row boat it is not in any way restricted to such application since it is equally adaptable for use in connection with circus seats, stadium seats, and the like.

Figure 2 probably best illustrates that the bight portions of the U-shaped seat engaging members 5 are pressed together and shaped to define bearings 2 for trunmons 3 of the side members 8 of the back.

The sides 8 are joined by cross strips or slats 9 and the lower portions of the sides 8 are extended forwardly to define-arms 10, the terminal portions of which are extended upwardly and are bifurcated as shown at 11 to form pairs of prongs 12.

Figure 3 illustrates that the prongs 12 straddle the forward cross bar 16 which connects the seat engaging members 5 and then embed themselves in the seat to secure the back rest in place. Particular attention is directed to the fact that the extent to which the prongs 12 may enter the bottom of the seat is limited by the engagement of the bottom of the cut-away portions 11 with the cross bar 16. This prevents the prongs from extending through the seat and possibly tearing the clothing of a person using the seat or possibly injuring his or her person.

In summarizing the invention, it will be seen that the improved back rest consists of a back hingedly connected to a seat engag ing member and having what might be said to be a pair of levers which extend beneath and engage the bottom of a seat to firmly attach the improved back rest to the seat without the aid of screws, nails, bolts, or other separate fastening devices, and by the same token the improved back rest may be easily removed from the seat by simply swinging the back forwardly and thereby releasing the prongs 12 from engagement with the bottom of the seat. It may be desired to merely collapse the seat without entirely disconnecting the same and in that case it is merely necessary to swing the back forwardly to an inclined position or, if possible, to a position substantially parallel to the horizontal plane which the seat occupies.

A back rest constructed in accordance with this invention may be easily applied to a row boat seat, a stadium seat, a circus seat, or the like, by simply causing the U- shaped seat engaging members 5 to embrace the seat from the rear edge thereof so as to position the back rest at the rear edge of the seat. The back rest is now swung upwardly so that the prongs 12 are caused to extend into the seat at opposite sides of the forward cross bar 16. The back rest is now held firmly in place and will not slide. Particular attention is directed to the fact that in case the improved back rest is used on a stadium seat the upper straps of the seat engaging members form definite divisions so as to mark a particular seat and thereby avoid crowding.

Figure 2 illustrates that the side members 8 of the back are confined between the seat engaging members 5 and the back is, therefore, prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged from the seat engaging members. Having thus described the inventioin what is claimed is:

'1. A detachable back rest for seats comprising a pair or connected seat engaging members, the connection between the seat engaging members consisting of a cross bar, a back hinged to said seat engaging members and having prongs adapted to straddle said cross bar and extend into a seat to hold the back rest in place.

2. A detachable back rest for seats comprising a pair of connected seat engaging members, the connection between the seat engaging members consisting of a cross bar, a back hinged to said seat engaging members and having prongs adapted to straddle said crossbar and extend into a seat to hold the back rest in place, and means adjacent the prongs and co-acting with the cross bar for limiting the entrance of the prongs into the bottom of the seat. i

3. A. detachable back rest comprising a air of U-shaped sea-t engaging members liaving their rear portions formed with bearings, a back having trunnions connected to said bearings, said back being provided with lever arms having upwardly directed terminal portions which are bifurcated to define prongs adapted to enter the bottom of a seat.

4. A detachable back rest comprising a pair of seat engaging members having their rear portions formed with bearings, a back having trunnions connected to said bearings, said back being provided with lever arms having upwardly directed terminal portions which are bifurcated to define prongs adapted to enter the bottom of a seat, and a cross bar connected to said seat engaging members and being straddled by said prongs whereby the upwardly directed terminals engage the cross bar and thereby limit themovement or the prongs into the seat. I

A detachable back rest for seats comprising a pair of seat engaging members having means to embrace a seat a back hinged to said seat engaging members, said back being provided with forwardly directed attaching arms having terminal portions extended upwardly and bifurcated to detine prongs adapted to be extended into the bottom of a seat, and front and rear cross bars connecting said seat engaging members, the front cross bar being straddled by said prongs and being engaged by the terminal portions of said attaching arms to limit the movement of the prongs into the seat.
