Application fil ed my 24, 1925. Serial m. 45,313..
This invention relates to an improved latch for closures, having more particular reference to a closure which is especially, but not necessarily, desi ned for use in connec- 6 tion with swinging doors and the like.
Briefly, the invention resides in the revision of a pivotally mounted latch of right angular formation, wherein one arm is constructed for cooperation w1th a keeper and the other arm for connection with a spring ressed slidably mo-unted shaft carrying and knobs for pulling and pushing the shaft for actuating the latch. A pivoted ie tainer i'sprovided for cooperation with the latch to hold it against pivotal movement to prevent operation of the improved device whenever necessary.
The invention is characterized particularly by the pull and push actuation, the arrangement being such that when it is desired to open the closure from the outside,- the outside knob is simply pulled, whileto open it from the inside, the same is merely pushed.- ,Othe1 features and advantages of thevinvention will become apparent from the following description and drawing.
In the accompanying drawing formin a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:-
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional and" elevational viewshowing a device con,-
structed in accordance with the present in vention with the latch in a locked state.
a In the drawin it is to be assumed that the device,-as be ore, stated, is applied toa horizontally swinging door which is indi- 'cated by the reference? character 1.- The frame is represented by the reference character 2, and it will be noted that this frame is provided with a recess 3 formin a keeper seat, adjacent which, is a base p ate 4 having a portion extending over part of the recess to provide a shoulder. On the inner side of the door is a bracket 5 including a pair of spaced/ears between which the cen-' tral portion of a latch 6 is pivoted. The
latch, as previously stated, is of right angular formation and one arm is provided with a nose 7 for cooperation with the aforesaid shoulder and keeper socket.
j The other arm is detachably pivoted as at 8 to the enlarged portion-of a sliding shaft 9. Said arm may be provided with an elongated slot to accommodate the pivot 8 there- .by permitting sufficient lateral play around the ivot to eliminate any possibility of bindln This shaft is provided at its oppo- 1 site en s with knobs 10 and 11 respectively.
The door 1 is provided with a bored opening in which a metal socket 12 is arranged. This socket is provided on its outer end with a spacing plate 13. A spring is confined within this socket and is connected with a shaft .9 in a manner to hold it in the approximate position shown in Fig. 1, at which time the latch 6 will be caught. s In order to maintain the latch in the last named position, a' pivoted retainer 15 is provided. This retainer comprises a strip of metal -havin ne end provided with a right. 'a'ngular nger piece-lfland the other end provided-with a verticalright angular wedge l7 aillapted-to be-located behind the adjacent an of the latch to hold it in closed position/as shownin Fig. 1. i
It iS/Obvi'us th twhen the .fingerpiece 16 is p'ressed downwardly, the retained-15 is rocked abo 1 t its pivot ina manner to move the wedge 17({0 inoperative position. Now,
by pushmg utwardly on the inside. knob 10, the latch n to release the door. Furthermore by pulling outwardly on the outer knob 11 when on the outside of" the door, the same action will take place.' The coiled spring, however, will re turn the. arts to normal locking position.
, will be rocked upon its pivot A care 111 consideration of the description I in connection with the drawings will un- Y doubtedly suffice to enable persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates to obof one of the armsof the latch having a nose tain a clear understanding of the same.
tive ends of the shaft, the free end of the other arm of the right angular shaped latch ,being pivotally secured to the shaft adjacent the inner end thereof, a coil spring associated With the shaft and with said closure for holding the shaft in a predetermined position, the last mentioned arm of the right angular shaped latch having a notch formed inthe edge thereof, a lever pivotally supported intermediate its ends on the inner side of the door, a Wedge shaped-member formed on one end of said lever and adapted for cooperation with said notch for holding the latch in a lockedposition, and a handle asactuating the same to permit the disengagement of the Wedge shaped portion from the notch.-
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN HERZING.
