IMPROVEMENT IN FIREMENS SHIELDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 15S,217, dated December 29, 1874 application filed October 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ELIJAH Low, of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields for Firemen; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification, in r.hich
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my shield.
My invention is designed as a portable shield for the use of firemen While operating in narrow streets or passages. It is intended to enable them to approach nearer the fire than they otherwise could, and to protect them from the excessive heat. It is designed to be carried by hand from place to place, as required, and its construction and arrangement enable thisto he done with ease.
Referring to the drawings, a shows the shield, consisting of a sheet of thin fire-proof materialsheet-iron is admirably adapted for the purpose-suitably strengthened by ribs or frame-work b b, and provided with legs or braces c c, as a stand or support. In the shield at d is an opening, closed when not in use by a cover, 0, through which the nozzle of the h se may be put. A second opening or window, f, is also provided, glazed with mica, through which the fire and the direction of the stream may be watched. The shield at is bent or curved at its upper part so as to serve as a protection against the flames from above. Handles g g are also attached to it for convenience in carrying it. A pole may be thrust through these handles, and the shield can then be easily transported bytwo men, and set up in any place required.
When taken to a fire from the en glue-house,
its construction permits it to be readily carried on ahook-and-ladder carriage.
What I claim as my invention is- The curved shield a, of fire-proof material, provided with ribs or frame b b, braces c c, nozzle-hole d, and mica-glazed window f, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of October, 1874:.
ELIJ AH LOW. Witnesses:
