T 0 all 'whom t may concern:
VBe it known that I, CiIAnLns F. GEsCHIoII- Tnn, a citizen of the United .States of America, residing atv TWashington, in the Dis-V trict: or" Columbia, have. Invented certain" new and useful Improvements in Window Screens, of which the following is a speciiication.k y
'Ilie average window screen is mounted upon a window slide fastened to the window frame. in that the wood at theV sliding joint swells due to moisture in the air thus making it almost impossible to raise Athe screen at times, then again the wood shrinksv which results in an extremely loose interengagement ot' the slidingy jointV which makes it possible for the screen to become accidentally dislodged and fall out. Another objection to this type of screen is that in order to remove or replace the scieenit is necessary to `raise it bodily upon the top edge of the slide member.
The object of my invention is to provide a screen with a sliding joint ofsuch construction that the screen may be introduced and engage with its slidewayxat` any point between the top and bottom of the slideway.
A further object of my invention is to provide a joint between the slideway and slide which will not be ai'iected by atmos-H pheric conditions.
Alith these objects in View my invention consists of the parts and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fullyv de' scribed.
In the drawings: v
Figure 1 is a front elevation of awindow screen embodying my invention, one of the side Stiles being in section.
Figure 2 isa transverse detail section of a window frame equipped with my screen.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the operating member.
Figure 4c is a transverse sectional view of Figure 3. s y
Figure 5 is av detail sectional view of a modified embodiment.
Figure 6 is anelevation detail view of the inner tace of the side stile.
Figure 7 is a detail view of another em# bodiment of my invention. y
The reference numeral 1 designates a winldowfraine of any approved construction having stop beads 2, 3 and 4f. To the stop bead 2 which may be either the outside stop This construction is objectionable` Appiiation 'flied `ifeimfuary 12, 1924. sei-iai ivo/692,414.
bead or the inside stop bead of awindow trame is secured a metalchannelslideway 5.
having a pair of standards 9 dependingl wam Fica-.Vf
'f Y, My vimproved screen comprises a frame therefrom, between which is journalledfa'revolvable slide 10.`
An operating'bloclr-ll'is slidablymounted Y0 in the recesses 7 and is providedwith a cam 'tace I12 which is adaptedto engage the spring 8, said block beinO provided with an operating handle'l, whichhandle extends through a slot 1li of the face plate 15. In
the preferred construction the cam block 11` is provided with a lug 16 which projects `through the slot 14 of thel plate 15 and is lield in said slot by being riveted to a `platel 17 which slides on the outer face of the plate 15, the handle 13 being formed by 'bending up one end of the plate 17.
vIn the operation of the device the wheels, or` revolvingslides 10, are all pulled into the recesses`7 and'consequently do not project Vbeyond the outer edgeface of the sidev stiles as illustrated in the drawings, the
spring 8 pulling the wheels 10 to this posil 'A l tion. Now, when the screen frame has been introduced between the slideways 5 the cam blocksll are pulled downward by means of toward the slideway 5, and consequently which position t-he wheels are held in full the* handles 13 whereupon the cam tace v12 s f engages the spring 8 and forces it outwardly interengaging position with the slideways 5 so .long as the cam 'block remains in its lowered position. When the cam block is pushed `down to its lowermost position it' is held in that position by gravityv and it also has a slide binding action on the underface of the plate 15 by reason of the fact that thevspring 8 is exerting its power toward"Y vthe under face of the plate 15. s v
`From the above it will be seen that the screen embodying my invention can be engaged ordisengaged with its slideways at any point between the top and bottom of mount the slide` wheel lO, its associated Spring 8 and operating Gain 1.1 in a self fcontaned housingQO so that the invention may be sold as ,an article of manufacture in stores. Y n
' In Figure 7 'i have niustmed the Slide as a pin 2l which may be securedA t'othe spring Sand perform the saine function as thewvheel 10. v v l It will, of course, be understood that changes may be made in the details of oonstruction hereinv shown, vWithinl the scope of the'appended claimv Without departing from Y Vthe spirit of my invention.l
What Irelaiin'is: l
said zittachment comprising a housing hav'- ying u slot in eaeh of its side Walls, a leaf yspring Within the housing and lsecured at one end to the housing, depending flanges nt the free end 4of the sprngraroller se-VV cured between said flanges, said spring normally holding theroller Within the housing,
25 through'one ofsaid slotsof the housing, a, l
seid lroller being adapted to be projected ouin slidahly mounted' in l.the Yother of the slots of Athe houslng and adapted to slidably engage thesaid spring and project the said rollerthrough one of the slots of the housing. f
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. i
