UNITED STATES ANTOINE JOSEPH ASTIER, OF COLOMBES, FRANCE.
WATER METER.
Application filed July 12, 1920. Serial No. 395,809.
(GRANTED THE PROVISIONS 0F THE ACT 0F MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L., 1313.)
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ANTOINE JOSEPH As TIER, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 130 Boulevard Valmy, 1n Colombes, Seine, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water Meters "(for which I have filed application for Letters Patent of France March 8, 1919, No. 496,764), of which the following is a speciication. l
This invention relates to a proportional meter foreonduits or pipes for water or other fluids, characterized by its simplicity of construction, facility of installation, the small loss of heat that it causes in the pipe in which it is installed, and the possibility which it offers of removing the counting device without interruptingthe circulation of water in the pipe.
To make the invention clearly understood, the present specification is accompanied, merely by way of example, by a drawing in which v Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view o my improved meter.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure'l, and showing the part 11 in one position.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the part 11 in another position.
In the said drawing 1, is the body of the meter; it is provided with two iianges 2 intended for connecting it to the pipe on which it is to be installed and it has a lower chamber 3 separated from the upper chamber 4 by a removable semi-circular partition 5 which rests on a shoulder 6 provided in the body of the meter.
The artificial resistance is created in the chamber 3, tending' to reduce the quantity of water which flows therethrough. This resistance is formed by a spiral screw 7 which is fixed in position and whose presence causes the reduction of the traversing quantity sov that in the upper chamber 4 a larger quantity is diverted therethrough in pro ortion to the ratio of unoccupied space in t e chambers 3 and 4.
- For the purpose of introducing the semicylindrical partition 5 and the section of Archimedes screw 7, the apparatus is provided at its upper part with a preferably rectangular opening closed by a covcr 8 provided at the bottom with a cylindrical wall 9, as Well as with four divergent flanges 10 startin from openings 9a.', 9b in opposite sides of the said wall 9, as more particularly clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4, the said wall 9'. being here shown as integral. with the semi-cylindrical partition 5.
The openings 9a, 9b are respectively inlet and outlet openings and the walls or flanges 10 serve to direct water through the pass formed by the chamber within the wall 9 and to also facilitate the -discharge of water through said pass.
A sleeve 11 which forms a casing is mounted with a slight amount of friction within the wall 9, and its penetration into the latter is limited by an annular fiange 12 with which it is provided on its outer circumference and which comes into contact with a seat provided in the said wall 9. A packing ring 19, a bronze ring 13 and a nut 14 screwed into the-boss 15 of the cover 8, ensure the proper positioning of the sleeve llrelatively to the wall 9.
An inner annular flange 16, with which the sleeve 11 is provided in the interior, forms a bearing for the wheel gear train of any well known construction of the meter, the small turbine or vane wheel 17 of which is mounted in a transverse chanel in the lower part of the said sleeve 11. Said sleeve has openings which are adapted to register with those provided between the diverging partitions 10 hereinbefore mentioned.
The upper end of the sleevev 11 is closed by a screw cover 18a with a window 18 having a glass cover through which the indications of the wheel gear train can be read.
My vimproved meter may be arranged in any desired position for use but owing to the arrangement of the baille screw 7 the flow of the liquid is retarded through the cham' stop the How in the pipe.
. cient to unscrew slightly the nut 14 in order to be able to give a quarter turn to the sleeve 11, so that it will be caused to close the openings between the wall 9 which form'for it a cock casing. The cover 18a is then removed, when the Wheel gear train may be Withdrawn.
The cover 18a can be afterwards replaced until the Wheel gear train is to be reinstated.
Having thus described my inyention, I claim: L
l. In a fluid meter, a bodyhaving a pass therethrough for the flow of" fluid and also having a second pass parallel with the first named pass and provided with Walls forming a cylindrical chamber intermediate the ends of said second pass, an Archimedean screw arranged in the first named pass, a cylindrical casing arranged and mounted for turning movement in said chamber of the second pass and having a Wall provided with openings which by the turning of said casing may be caused to register with the second pass or to be moved out of communication therewith to cut off the flow of fluid through said second pass and fluid operated measuring means mounted in said casings.
2. In a iluid meter, a body' having a pass therethrough for the flow of fluid and also havin a second pass vparallel with the first name pass and provided With vvalls forming a c lindrical chamber intermediate the ends o said second pass, an Archimcdean screw arranged in the first named pass, a cylindrical casing arranged and mounted for turning movement in said chamber in the second passl and having a Wall provided with openings Which by the turning of said casing may be caused to register with the second pass or to be moved out of communication :therewith to cut off the flow of fiuid through said second pass and fluid operated measuring means mounted in said casing and removable therefrom, said casinghaving a removable cover laffording access to said measuring means, and 4means to secure said casing in either position.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
ANTOINE JOSEPH- ASTIER.
