Detroit, in the county of Wayneand State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to window regula-l tors designed particularly fortuse .in vehicles and has for one of its objects the pro vision of ,improved means lfor holding the handle upon the shaft and for holding the' member, for raising and lowering the window, from movement in either of its directions. Another object is to provide a structure which is compact and may be cheaply manufactured.
. Further objects of the invention reside in of the handle andhandle shaft and thewasher therebetween shown separated.

This lifter arm preferably has the integral gear segment 5 at its pivot end, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of the gear 6. This gear is actuatedby means of the handle shaft 7 and handle 8, the latter being located at the inner side of the door.

In detail, the lock comprises the ratchet wheel 9 the teeth of which are engageable by corresponding ends of the pawls 10 and 11, the opposite ends of which'are pivotally connected at 13 and 14 respectively to the disc 12. For the purposel of normally holding the pawls in engagement with the ratchet wheel 4there is the U-shaped spring 18 extending around the gear shaft 15 and engaging the .adjacent faces of the pawls 10 and 11. For limiting the swinging of the p'awls toward the axis of the handle shaft during their' releasing movement, these pawls have the transverse projections 19 extending toward and engageable with each other.
The mounting plate 1 has the annular-inwardly odset embossed portion 20 to vthe inner face of which the ratchet wheel 9 is secured by suitable means such as the rivets` 2 1. This embossed portion is concentric with the axis of the pinion shaft to accu f rately locate the disc 12.
. To hold the handle 8 shaft 7 the inner end-portion 22 of the handle shaft is reduced and threadedly engages in the handle. The adjacent surfaces of the handle shaft and handle are provided with the pairs of shoulders 23 and 24tl1e'shoulders of eachl pair being preferably diametrically opposite each other andthe shoulders of the handle shaft facing'oppositely tothe shoulders of the handle and `preferably ex ,tending at right angles thereto. The adjacent surfaces of the handle 'shaft and handle between their respective shoulders are inclined. 25 is a sprmg washer between the uponl the handle adjacent surfaces of the handle shaft and handle and surrounding the reduced end portion22 of the handle shaft. This spring washer has-struck-out therefrom the pairs of oppositely facing projections or tongues 26 and .27, one pair being at right angles to the other pair and the projections of each pairbeing diametrically opposite each other. The projections 26 are struck inwardlyT to engage the shoulders 23 of the handle shaft while the projections 27 are struck outwardly to engage the shoulders 24 of the handle. The arrangement is such that the handle maybe screwed upon the handle shaft during which time its inclined surface adjacent to the surface upon the handle shaft will ride over the projections 27 until the handle has been firmly tightened upon the handle shaft.' If it is attempted to unscrew the handle from the handle shaft the projections 27 of the spring washer coming into engagement with the shoulders-24 of the handle prevent the uns'crewing. As a .consequence the handle is firmly secured upon `the handle shaft and same in either direction.
What we claim as our invention is:
'1.` In a window regulator, the combination with a member rotatable in opposite directionsfor raising and lowering a' window, of a stationary member provided with teeth, a plurality of members connected to said rotatable member and engageable with the teeth vof said stationary member to hold said movable member on oppositefsides of its axis from rotation in either` direction, and means for releasing saidA holdino' members will rotate .the

In a window regulator, the combination with a member rotatable in opposite direc'- tionsfor raising and lowering a window, of a stationary ratchet wheel, pawls connected to said rotatable member and engageable with the teeth `of said ratchet wheel'on o posite sides of its axis to hold said rotatab e member from rotation in either direction, and means for releasing said 'pawls from said ratchet wheel and subsequently rotating said rotatable member.
'3. In a window regulator, the combination with a gear rotatable in oppositedirecf tions for raising and lowering a window, of a stationary ratchet wheel, a pair of pawls connected to said ar, and engageable with the teeth of sai ratchet wheel on oppositefsides of its axis, and an operating member for releasing both of said pawls from -said ratchet wheel and rotating said gear in either direction through one of said pawls.

4L In a window regulator, the combination with a gear rotatable in opposite directions for raising and lowering a window, of a stationary ratchet wheel, a disc between said ratchet wheel and gear and connected to the -for raising and lowering a window, of a ratchet wheel, a disc adjacent to said ratchet wheel and connected to said gear, a pair of pawls pivotally connected at corresponding ends to said disc and having' the opposite ends engageable with the teeth of said ratchet wheel to hold` said disc and gear from rotation ineither direction, said pawls having cam portions and an operating member provided with members engageable with said cam portions to initially release said pawls from said ratchet wheel and subsequently rotate said disc and gear.
6. The combination with a member ro-S tatable in opposite directions for raising and lowering the window, of a stationary ratchet wheel, a pawl connected to said rotatable memberand engageable with the teeth of said ratchetwheel to hold said rotatable member from rotation, a rotatable driving member and means upon said rotatable driving member and having a cam action upon sald pawl for releasing the same from said ratchet wheel and for-subsequently rotating said rotatable member through said pawl.
7. In a window regulator, the combination with a gear rotatable in opposite directions for raising and lowering a window, -of a stationary ratchet wheel, a pair of pawls 'connected' to said gear and engageable with said ratchet wheel, o posed projections on said pawls engageabe to limit movement thereof in one direction, an operating member, and means on said operating member for moving said pawls from engagement with said ratchet wheel into abutting position, whereby a. rigid connection is established between said o rating member and gear for rotating the atter.
