Be it known that I, Ronnu'r E. lVALLrsnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Devices for Picture and Mirror Cords, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to devices for securing picture and mirror cords and allowing the suspension of said cords; one object being to provide a much stronger union be tween the cord proper and the member which is used for attachment to a nail, hook, or moulding on the wall.

Another object is-to'make my improved device in such manner that it will be neater in appearance than any device for a similar purpose heretofore made.

A further object is to so construct the device of my present invention that it can be used as one of the parts of the two-part de vice covered in my pending application for United States patent for improvements in attaching devices for picture and mirror cords, Serial No. 751,035.

These objects and other advantageous ends which will be set forth hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a face View of a device made in accordance with my present invention,

ing, by cutting or stamping out a piece of sheet metal, said blank including a strip portion 10 which at its bottom has lateral extensions 11 and 12, the lower portions of said extensions having beveled edges 13 which intersect with the bottom edge 14. The strip portion 10 adjacent its top has a slot 15, the upper part 16 of which is much wider than the lower part 17. I also preferably provide the strip portion 10 with a hole 18 for a purpose hereinafter described The lower portion of the blank is first bent, as shown in Figures 5 and 6, so that the ex tensions 11 and 12 ta re an arcuate formation to produce a socket 19, the edges 13 being moved slightly upward and being'spaced apart, as shown in Figures 5 and 6, to allow the looped end 20 of a cord 21 to be inserted in said socket, thespace 22 between the edges 13 providing room for the insertion of the cord. The loop is then pulled down into the socket and the extensions 11 and 12 are then rolled or curled to firmly embrace the opposite portions 23 and 24 of the loop 20 as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. These curled or turned extensions as indicated at 25 and 26 are preferably made so as to' slightly taper downward and in this manner any pull or weight upon the cord 21 will serve to jam or bind the loop of the cord within the turns of the extensions 11 and 12.

If the device is to be used for direct suspension upon a nail or book in a wall, the nail or hook can extend through the slot 15.

If it is desired to suspend the device from a moulding, such as a picture moulding on a wall, the slot 15 allows attachment of a moulding-engaging member 27 as shown in Figures 8 and 9 and as illustrated in my above mentioned pending patent application.

In the use of the invention as shown in Figures 8 and 9, the strip portion which is indicated at 10 is bent as shown at 10*. The device so arranged can be secured to the back 28 of an ornament 29 by a screw 18' which passes through the hole 18 in the member 10*. This ornament canbe in the form of a rosette and serves to obscure the device from view and also provides an ornamental topping for the picture or mirror cord. The member 27 as in my previously mentioned pending patent application, has a part 30 adapted to enter the wide portion 16 of the slot 15 by turning the portion 17 edgewise and inserting said part 30 through the entire length of the slot 15, after which the member 27 can be turned into the position illustrated, and since the part 30 is wider than the part 16, it will be joined to the strip portion 10, and since the part 27 at its top is in the form of a hook, it can be supported on a picture moulding and in turn will serve to support the part 10 and rosette 29.

By providing the socket 19 which tapers downward as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 5 and by curling the extensions 11 and 12 as previously described, it is practically impossible for the cord to become detached and great weight can be put upon the cord without fear of accidental detachment.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described, including a member having a socket; and a cord having a looped end fitting within said socket, said member having extensions curled around the opposite sides of said looped end of the cord.

2. A device of the character described, including a member having a socket tapered downward; and a cord having a looped end fitting within said socket, said member having extensions curled around the opposite sides of said looped end of the cord.

4. A device of the character described, including a member having a socket, the sides of which include extensions having beveled edges curled upwardly into holding engagement with the sides of a loop of cord within the socket.

5. A device of the character described, having a portion for attachment to a facing member and a cord-securing portion, said device having a portion offset to the plane of said first portion and having an aperture, said offset portion, when said securing portion is attached to a facing member, serving to provide head room for a supporting device projected through the aperture.
