WHISTLE.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, EDWARD R. PETRIE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at .New York, in the county of New York and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whistles, of whichthe following is a specification, -suchas will enable those skilled in the art which it appertains to make and use the 10 same.

This invention relates to whistles and particularly to devices of this class of novel construction whereby the same may be utilized for purposes other than whistles and which are so constructed as to permit of the supporting thereof on the body of wearer, and particularly on the finger of a hand; and the object of the invention is to provide a whistle of the class described fashioned to form a part or parts adapted to be passed over the finger of a wearer for supportin object icing to provide a whistle of the class specified with an adjustable mouthpiece whereby the same may be moved into several positions for the convenient use or operation thereof as well as to move into an inoperative position to form the entire whistle structure a compact package which may be readily carried about in a pocket or suitable container; a still further object being to provide a Whistle of the class and for the purpose specified the sound chamber of which is of such dimensions as to form a com artment or chamber for receiving confectlons or other food products or novelties whereby the device may be utilized, if de sired, as an advertising medium in advertising confections, food products or any other merchandise, such for example as medicinal preparations and vanity cases; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class F and for the purpose specified which .is simple in construction, efiicient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive comprises a whistle in the form of a ring to be worn upon the finger of a hand and is composed of a finger encircling band 12 on the top of which is an elongated and substantially elliptical hollow body 13, the chamber 14 of which forms the sound cham ber of the whistle, and the chamber 14 is entirely closed except for an aperture 15 formed in the top wall thereof.

Secured to the top wall of the body 13 at one side of the aperture 15 is a mouthpiece 16 in the form of a flattened tube, the top wall of which depresses inwardly and dowu wardly and is preferably slightly shorter than the bottom wall as shown at 17. The mouthpiece 16 may be secured to the body 13 in any desired way but as Shown the outer end portion 18 thereof projects beyond the corresponding end of the bodv13.

In the construction shown in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive, 1 substitute for the finger encircling band 12 two finger encircling members 19 which are pivotally mounted in connection with the opposite side walls of the body 13 and are adapted to be moved into juxtaposition to and. lie flatly on the side walls of said body as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing.

In this form of construction the aperture 15 in the top wall of the body 13 is made circular in form rather than rectangular as shown in Fig. 1, and the mouthpiece 16 is secured to a ring member 20 having an outwardly directed annular channel to receive the top wall of the body 13 and whereby the ring member 20 and said mouthpiece 16 may be rotated on the body 13. In other words the ring member 20 is in the form of a loose eyelet, and by reason of the off-centering of the aperture 15 the mouthpiece 16, or the outer end 18 thereof, may be projected from one end and both sides of the body 13 in the operation of blowing the whistle, or may be moved into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5 and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6 to form a compact package of the'entire whistle structure as will be apparent.

In Figs. 8 to 10 inclusive, I have shown another form of construction in which I provide a box-shaped whistle body 21 which is open at the top and provided with a removable cover 22 frictionally retained. in position by a number of outwardly pressed members 23 on the body 21 engaging an annular bead 24: on the cover member 22. The cover member 22 is provided substaiitially centrally of the top thereof with an aperture 25 at one side of which are a plurality of small spaced apertures 26 through which projecting tongues 27 on a mouthpiece 28 are adapted to pass, in securing the mouthpiece 28 to the cover member 22, and the members 27 are bent at right angles to fixedly secure the mouthpiece'in position as will be apparent.

The mouthpiece 28, in the construction shown in Figs. 8 to 10 inclusive, comprises a top wall 29 which when in use depresses inwardly and downwardly and the bottom is cut out, or the major portion thereof, but is closed as shown at 30 by that portion of the mouthpiece which projects beyond the cover member 22, in other words, in the use of the mouthpiece 28 the top of the cover member 22 constitutes part thereof.

In Figs. 7 and of the drawings, I have shown a wire loop 31 pivoted to the opposite side walls of the body 21 to facilitate the carrying of said body or the entire whistle and the mounting thereof on the hand, if desired, the loop 31 being capable of more ment into juxtaposition to the periphery of the body portion 21 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 8. By reason-of the fact that the body 21 will be comparatively large as compared with the other form of whistles shown. the loop 31 may or may not be employed and, if desired, a comparatively light spherical member32 may be employed in the sound chamber 33 of'the whistle, or the bottom 3t of the body' 21 maybe provided with an annular weakened portion 35, whereby the bottom 34 is rendered flexible and may vibrate to increase the sound of the whistle or to change the tone thereof.

With the construction shown in Figs. 7, S and 9, the whistle body composed of the box-shaped part 21 and cover member 22 may be used as a container for confections, food products of various kinds and classes, medicinal preparations and other merchandise of any kind or class, as a sample container used for advertising purposes, or as a container for merchandise sold which may, after the product has been removed, facilitate the use of the container as a whistle, and while I have shown a specific form of construction in carrying this'phase of-my invention into effect, it will be understood that any shape or form of container may be employed and any suitable practi'cal mounting of a mouthpiece or whistle forming means may be employed.

While I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it will be understood that I am not necessarily limited to the specific structures herein shown and described, nor to the specific uses thereof herein set out, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1. A device of the class described comprising a hollow body fashioned to form a container for predetermined articles, prod ucts or things, said body having an aperture opening into the chamber therein, a mouthpiece part on said body adjacent and directed to said aperture, said part being rotatably and eccentrically mounted in connection with said body whereby in one position thereof, the tip of the mouthpiece porion will project beyond said body, and in another position thereof, the entire monthpiece part will be contained within the boundary of said body.

2. A whistle "device of the class described comprising a hollow apertured body and a lnouthpiece part rotatably mounted on said body adjacent the aperture thereof and directed to said aperture in its different positions of adjustment, said part having eccentric mounting on said body and being of such dimensions as to be normally contained within the boundaries of said body and in one position of adjustment to project a portion of said part beyond'rsaid body. 1

3. A whistle device of the class described comprising a hollou body-having an-aperture therein, a mouthpiece portion on said body and one end of which is directed to the aperture thereof and the other end portion directed outwardly of said body, and means fashioned to normally fit snugly upon said body and to be moved into a projecting position for supporting the whistle in conneetion with the body of a wearer.

4. A whistle device of the class described comprising a hollow apertured body, and a mouthpiece part eccentrically mounted on said body and directed to said aperture, and
