To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. BOU- rnmnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fasteningdevices, and has particular reference to fastening devices adapted for use on pasteboard shipping containers, packing boxes, etc.
An important object of the present invention is toprovide a fastening device which may be securely applied to a 'pasteboard box, or the like.
Another object is to provide such a device which may be easily applied with the expenditure of a minimum amount of labor.
Another object is toprovide such a device which in view of its form will be economical to produce and strong and durable in service.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. I

Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a fastening device made in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the body portion of a box showing how the improved fastening device is applied;

Figure 4 is a view of a strip of material, and illustrates how the fastening devices may be blanked out.
My improved fastening device comprises a body portion 10, which is preferably blanked out from sheet material of suitable thickness, said body portion being elongated and having extending from its upper edge a tongue 11. The tongue 11 has a generally tapered form, the sides 12 thereof merging into the'sides of the body portion 10, and the extremity being curved as at 13. At the bottom edge of the body portion 10, I provide a reversely curved recess 14:, which has .a shape contrageneric to that of the tongue member 11. In other words, the recess has tapering sides 15, which are parallel respectivelyto the edges 12 of the tongue and are joined at the bottom of the recess by a curve 16, which is of a radius equal to the curve 13. From this it will be seen that the edges 15 of the recess form a pair of tapered prongs 17, which extend downwardly from the body portion in a direction opposed to that of the tongue 11.
At the center of the body portion 10 I provide another prong 18, which is outstanding from the surface and substantially perpendicular thereto. This prong 18 may preferably be formed by punching out an opening 19 and folding the punched out material on a horizontal line, as at 20, whereby the tongue 18 will be integral with the body portion 10.
By referring particularly to Figures 2 and 3 it will be seen that the improved' fastening device of the invention may be very conveniently applied to shipping containers, such as pasteboard boxes. In applying the same the two lower prongs 17 are forced through the material, and their extremities bent upwardly, as indicated by the reference characters 21, whereupon the whole clip is bent in an opposite direction and the tongue 18 is thereupon forced into the material of the box. Thus when the inner surface ofthe clip is flush with the surface of the box, the tongue 18 is folded upon itself, as at 22, in a direction opposite to that of the prongs 17. From this it will be seen that the improved clip has a three point anchorage in the wall of the box and will be securely held in place by virtue of the fact that the prongs are bent in opposite directions, and there is no possibility of the device coming loose. The labor necessary to apply the fastening device to the box is reduced to a minimum so that on this score the device is advantageous as well as in consideration of its efiiciency. As is well known to those skilled in the art, the
tongue member 11 extends upwardly be yond the top edge of the box 23 and when the cover of the box is applied the said tongue extends beyond the cover. After such application the tongue is bent over up on'itself, as indicated by the dot and dash line 25 in Figure 3.
In Figure 4 is illustrated a preferred method of blanking out the improved clips, wherefrom it will be evident that: they may be produced with a minimum amount of wasteniaterial. The strip 26 is fed through a press automatically, andoperated upon by a die, which forms the two tapered sides 12, and the curved portion 13 of the tongue At the next step the same die'forins-the two lower prongs tongue of the next clip simultaneously, in view-of the fact that the recess lat is of the same shape and size as the tongue 11. The prong 18 may be previously formed in'the strip, or it may be produced simultaneous with the tongue 11. d
From the foregoing it will be obvious that an improved fastening device has been;
produced, which will be simplein construction, easy of application, and strong and durable in service. Changes may be resorted to in the minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes falling within the scope 17 of the first clip; and the of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A fastening clip of thecharacter de-- scribed, comprising a body portion, a pair of pointed prongs extending from one edge thereof,v a. curved tongue extending. from the opposite edge of the body portion, and an offset prong, extending from one surface of the body portion.
2. A, fastening clip of the character described, comprising a body portion of sheet metal having a'tapered tongue extending from one of its edges and a reversely shaped recess in its opposite edge, the central por tion of the body memberbeingperforated and the material from the perforation being-bent outwardly to'forin a prong.-
3. A blank fora fasteningclip of the cl'iaractei"described, comprising a strip of bendable material having a series of separated wedge shaped scores, and a series of wedge shaped cuts intermediate the scores, the n'iaterialat the cuts being displaced substantially at right angles-tothe body'of the stri p i 4. A fastening clip of the character described, comprising a strip ofbendable material having a wedge shaped tongueat one end, a wedge shaped recessat the other end, contrageneric to the shape of the tongue and a displaced prong interniediatedts ends.
