Description

H. M. LEH
, Dec. 8, 1925- BOOKREST Filed Dec. 4
C iv dill Patented Dec. 8, 1925.
HAROLD M. LEE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOOKREST. I
Application filed Detember'4, 1922. Serial No. 604,672.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD M. LEH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Bookrest, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to book-rests and more particularly to folding rests adapted for use by stenographers when transcribing their notes to the typewriter.
The purpose of my invention is to provide an improved rest of the character indicated that may be at once well adapted to meet the needs of service, that will fold fully, holding a note bookin either 0 on or folded position, and that is easy an inexpensive to manufacture.
Further urposes will appear in the specification an in the claims.
I have preferred to illustrate my invention in but one form, selecting a form that eficiently performs the functions requlred and which moreover -well illustrates the princi les involved.
In t e drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my rest when folded.
Figure 2 is perspective view of the same rest open and in position for use.
Figure 3 is a section upon line 3-3 of Fi 'ure 1.
Ilescribing in illustration and not in limitation In order to fullyv satisfy the convenience of stenographers a book-rest should be capable of adjustment to a variety of angles, should hold the book firmly and should 0ccupy a minimum of space when in folded position. I have aimed to meet theseconditions with a maximum of strength and a simplicity of construction which secures cheapness along with great convenience.
In the illustration, the metal base 8 is padded at 9 with felt to protect the surface of the desk. The metal of the base is upwardly bent presenting edges 10 to prevent rearward movement of a bracket 11 pivoted to the back of a refer-ably metal support ing flap 12. The racket is adapted to fold against the flap and may be made to fold either way.
The flap and base are pivoted together at the bottom of the flap and the same pintle 13 is used to pivot a stop 14 by which excessive downward movement of a note book or other copy is prevented. This common pivoting saves in space and in manufacture and the strips of the metal 15 and 16 from the base and stop respectively are oppositely turned to encircle the pintle; as best seen in Flgure 3, leaving room for the strips 17 of the flap; to pass between them.
Near t e upper and lower ends of the flap I provide clips 18 and19 pivoted to the back of the flap, preferably near enou h to the ends to fold against the front of t e flap to hold the note book or other copy and about the ends of the flap and of the base in folded position. When folded they will therefore lie against the back of the base or, when desired, against a note book or other copiy between them and the back of the base.
he bracket 11 occupies less room across the width of the flap than the entire width and when folded lies between the base and it the hinge I space the base and flap just suficiently to leave room for the hinges of the clips and brackets and for the metal edges 10 of the base so that theparts shall fold flat to the position shown inIigure 1.
It will be obvious that the desirable features of my invention may be presented in other forms and it is my purpose to secure herein all such as come within the reasonable spirit and scope of my claims.
Having t us described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I. A folding book-rest comprising a base, a sup-porting flap pivotal]. secured to the base, abrace between the ap and base and a pivoted bail at the lower end of the flap adapted to fold and hold against the front of the flap or the back of the base.
2. A book-rest comprising a base, a flap and a stop pivoted together and having a common pmtle, a brace between the lie andbase, adljustable to different slopes 0*? lie and boo (-holding clips near the upper an lower ends of the flap, adapted to clip and hold a ainst the front of the flap or the back of the base.
3. A collapsible book rest, comprising flap and base members, means for supporting them in extended position and clips m0vable to clip the copy in front of the book member and pivoted to it near enough to in use and to be shifted back of the base the end to fold either Way so as to hold the when not in use to hold an object between copy in one position and to retain the base 10 it and the back. and flap members together in the other posi- 4. A collapsible book rest, comprising base tion. and flap members pivoted together, in combination with a bail Wider than-the flap HAROLD M. LEH.
