UNITED STATES DELBERT w. MEANS, or WICHITA, KANSAS. I
VALVE-GRIN DIN G TOOL.
Application filed May 17,
5 Kansas, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Valve-Grinding Tools, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application. My invention relates to a valve grinding tool. I
The object of my invention is to provide a tool that is small, so that it may be carried in an ordinary tool chest and also to have a tool that is simple in construction, and proparts. 7 g A still further object of myinvention is to provide a tool, that when it is being operated it has the possibilities of varying the,
tension while grinding.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side view, showing the tool in its operative position on a valve, suchas is used in an internal combustion gas engine.
Fig, 2 is a transverse section, taken on line A. looking in the direction ofi arrow.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, taken on line B of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of arrow. 7 v a i Fig. 4 is a. detailed sectional view, taken on line C, looking in the direction of arrow.
1 is a square shaft twisted spirally, having a spur member 2, pivotally connected to one end, said member having spurs adapted to seat in perforations on the face of the valve 3. On the opposite end of said shaft is a handle 4, which is revolubly mounted thereon. 5 is a grip, constructed preferably as follows: Said grip has a shell 6, a sleeve 7 mounted thereon, and the sleeve has an integral head 8. 9 is a plate having a rectangular opening 10, adapted to receive two rollers 11, each of which has its face angularly grooved so that the rollers will fit snugly over the shaft, said rollers being set directly Said rollers are g'nvoted between said plate and the head of the sleeve, and the plate is firmly attached to the head by screws 12; also to the shell 6 by means of screws 13.
When being used, the grip 5 is reciprocated upon the shaft and held firmly to prevent the grip from rotating; thus the shaft will be rotated alternately in opposite directions. Suitable pressure downward upon 1924. Serial No. 714,091.
the tool is maintained by one hand bearing down upon the handle 4.
The rollers function as very efhcient antifriction elements, and the sleeve 7 functions as a protecting means to prevent the shaft from wearing out the square opening in the grip.
I'do not confine myself to any certain material for the shell, as it may be made of wood, hard rubber, or metal. Neither do I confine myself to the exact shape of the gri 3 as it may have a rough surfaceor polygona l in shape. The principle is that of holding it firmly, causing the spiral to rotate as the valve is being ground, therefore the manufacturer may deviate from the exact shape and size shown.
To grind a valve, the usual grinding paste 18 applied to the seat of the valve, and the valve heing placed in position, I place the spur member of my grinding tool in apertures in the valve that is provided for grinding purposes, and the spur member being pivotally mounted to the spiral shaft will accommodate itself though the shaft is held slightly out of alignment, and then by forcing the grip from end to end the valve is caused to rotate, reversing the revolutions as the grip travels to and fro on the shaft. The reversed motion has a tendency to reduce or increase the tension, allowing the paste to distribute over the face of the valve and valve seat.
Such modifications may be made, as fall within the scope of the appended claim, and having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
In a valve grinding tool, a spiral shaft, means for connecting said shaft to the valve, and means for holdin said shaft in alignment with the shaft 0 said valve, an actuating grip slidably mounted on said shaft, said grip comprising a shell, having a sleeve, in the center thereof and the said sleeve having a bearing on one end thereof, sheaves vmounted in said bearing, a plate registering with said bearings and sheaves and'function ing as a cap for said bearings, means for firmly attaching said plate to said bearings, said plate functioning as means for binding said sleeve and bearings to ihe said shell for DELBERT W. MEANS.
the purpose set forth and described.
