Be it known that I, PATRICK H. CASEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates generally to boxes, and moreV particularly to foldable lo pasteboard boxes, my primary object being the provision of a box for the support and display of articles upon counters, tables and the like, and which to this end is provided with means normally forming' a part of the box whereby it may be supported in an inclined position upon a display surface and a topi flap held open in such display position whereby the contents may be readily viewed.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a box of the above nature which may in this way be held in display position so that its contents may be readily viewed, without necessitating the use of other implements or devices beyond those carried by the box and normally forming a part thereof and a still further object is the provision of a box in which the supporting features are completely formed, except as to the mere folding` thereof, when the blank of the box is cut in the first instance.

Referring now to these figures and particularly to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive I have shown a box which it will be noted from the blank illustrated in Figure 3 includes a rectangular bottom section 15 joined at one slde by a web 16 forming the rear wall of the box, with a topgsection 17 having a central liap 18 which may if desired be of the fanciful shape shown or other desired shape. The blank is folded along lines 19 and 20, at opposite sides of the strip 16 forming the rear wall so that the top'section 17 may overlie the bottom section 15 in vertically spaced relation.

At its opposite side the top section 17 is connected by a strip 21 with a bottom flap 22, the latter foldable beneath the bottom section 15 along line 23 and 24 at opposite sides of the connecting strip 21 whereby the connecting strip extends around the end flap 25 of the bottom section when the latter is bent upright along its folding line 26 and whereby the bottom Hap 22 may extend flatwise against the base of the bot-tom section 15. The bottom section 15 also has side fla-ps 27 bendable upright at the sides thereof, each of these flaps being provided adjacent to the inner end of the bottom section with a lengthwise slit 28. At the inner and outer portions of the bottom flap 22 are laterally projecting tongues 29 Vand 30, which are bendable along and outside of the end portions of the side flaps 27, tongues 30 having notches 31 in their outer edges to form laterally projecting locking tabs 32 adapted to be extended inwardly and upwardly through the slits 28 of the side flaps 27 in the manner shown in Figure 2 so that the bottom flap 22 is thus locked in its position across the lower surface of the bottom section l5. The tongues 29 are formed opposite the connecting strip 21, the latter of which in conjunction with the side flap 25 forms the front wall of the box as seen in Figure 2, while the tongues 30 are formed at the ends of a bendable strip 33 along the outer or free side of the bottom flap 22 which in the folded position extends along the outer side of the strip 16 between the bottom and top sections and forms with the latter the rear wall of the box.

tion 17 has benda-ble side flaps 84 which in the folded position are extended downwardly over the side flaps 27 and the tongues 29 and 8O of these side flaps, the free ends 35 of flaps 84 being extended inwardly between the bottom section `15 and the sides of the bottom flap 22 as plainly seen in Figure. 4.

The cover flap 18 of the top section 17 has adjacent to its connected end a cross slit 36, and the bottom flap 22 has its central area partially cut out along a series of lines to constitute leg `forming strips 37 -in spaced parallel relation, aswell as a cross strip 88 connecting the free endsof said leg forming strips, and a lid supporting strip 39`bet'ween the leg forming strips 37. The leg forming strips 37 are bendable along central lines 40 and along end lines 41 and 42 so that they may be doubled upon themselves in the folded position as plainly shown in Figures 2 and 5. Moreover each of theleg formingl strips has along its outer side appa-ir of brace wings 443 which are bent at 'right angles' to the folded legs as in Figures'2 and 5, and which in this position engage at one :end the cross strip 88 when the latter Vis shited in the bending of the legs until it abuts the inner ends of the legs adjacent to the folding line 41; Near the folding line 41 at the outer sides of the wings 48, the bottom flap 22 has angular slits forming tongues 44 which tongues when lifted to partly overlap the cross strip 38, serve .to lock the leg forming strips in the effective position as plainly seen in Figure. i

VVhenthe legs are yfolded to the eifective position shown inA Figures 2 and 5,.'the lid supporting strip 89, which is integral at one end with the-cross strip 38, is shifted toward the rear of the box so that itsfree end may be turned upwardly and its notched 'extremity 45 projected forwardly through the slit 36 of the cover 18 whereby the box will thus be held in the inclined display position shown in Figure 2 with its Vcover elevated as in Figure 1 so that the contents of the box are thus plainly exposed to view.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 6 to 9 inclusive,r the same construction as described ,in connection with Figures 1 to 5 inclusive is adhered to for the purpose of holding the box in inclined position and supporting the lid in upwardly inclined open position although the box itself is formed somewhat differently. As seen in the blank, Figure 8, the box body includes a bottom 46 having its central area cutout to constitute the leg forming strips 37a, crossstrips 38a, top supporting strips 89a and wings 43a, connected to the top kor lid 47 by aV strip 48 and to a bottom-.lining 49 by strips 50 and 51- When bent upwardly on-the folding lines 52and5'3, the `strips 48 and 51 constitute the rear and ,frontwalls and the strip 50 is then bent inwardly and downwardly upon the folding line 54 at its inner edge and horizontally upon the folding line 55 at its outer edge so that the bottom lining 49 lays across the inner upper surface of the bottom 46 as plainly seen in Figure 7.

The box bottom 46 also has side extensions 56 and side strips 57, the latter being adapted to be bent at right angles to the front and rear walls 51 and 48 along the folding nlines 58 so thatth'eir free ends overlan at the box sides. A display box having a lid or cover and having in its bottom portion a centralare cutout to form a leg forming strips and a ltop or cover holding strip, :the said leg ,forming strips being foldable upon themselvesgto form supporting legs outstanding from the bottom of the box adjacent to its rear portion, and the said top holding strip being shiftable with 'the leg for-ming strips whereby to protect rearwardly beyond the box when the leg forming strips are folded, and 5 having means engagea-,ble with thecove'r or top to hold the latter in upright open posltion.

A folded box formed of cardboard and the like having a top or cover and having in its bottom portion an area cut out along parallel lines to constitute spaced leg forming strips and a cover engaging strip, said leg forming strips being bendable upon themselves to form supporting legs extending angularly from the box bottom adjacent to its rear portion, and said cover supporting strip having a notched free end and being shiftable rearwardly with the said leg forming strips When the latter are folded, the top or cover having a slit to receive the notched free end of the said cover supporting strip, said leg forming strips having a cross piece at their free ends and said box having angular tongues at opposite sides of the leg forming strips with Which the cross strip is engageable to lock the leg forming strips in their folded eective positions.

A folded box formed of cardboard and the like having a top or cover and having in its bottom portion an area cut out along parallel lines to constitute spaced leg forming strips and a cover engaging strip, said leg forming strips being bendable upon themselves to form supporting legs extending angularly from the box bottom adjacent to its rear portion, and said cover supporting strip having a notched free end and being shiftable rearwardly with the said leg forming strips When the latter are folded, the top or cover having a slit to receive the notched free end of the said cover supporting strip, said leg forming strips having a cross piece at their free ends and said box having angular tongues at opposite sides of the leg forming strips With which the cross strip is engageable to lock the leg forming strips in their folded effective positions, and brace Wings along one side of each of the said leg forming strips for bracing the latter in their folded effective positions.

5. A display box having a cover or lid adapted to be held in upright position to expose the interior of the box, and also having a body Whose bottom portion includes a member provided With integral foldable means forming supporting legs adjacent to the rear of the box in the folded position, and a member carried by said foldable means and engageable with the cover or top to hold the latter in upright position When the leg forming means are folded.
