GEORGE J. NICHOLS, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
COMBINED SPA'IANID LEG COVERING.
Application filed November 14, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE J NIoHoLs, a citizen of theUnitcd States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Spats and Leg Coverings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oft-he invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make-and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined spat and leg covering. It isthe common practice in the: northern parts of the country Where there is a great deal ofsnow, for the people to wear some proctective covering about the ankles and legs. This is especially so with children. A suitable covering must be su'ch'as to keep the-covered parts warm, fit the leg of the wearer sungly, and should be so constructed as to keep out the snow.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device in the nature of a combined, spat and leg covering, the latter being adapted to be wrapped about the leg of the wearer in lapped folds or coils.
It is a further object of the invention to so shape the leg covering that when wrapped about the leg of the wearer it will fit the same snugly without stretching or drawing of the material.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such a device with an opening along one side closed by suitable fasteners, which fasteners are efficiently disposed to effect a tight closing of the device.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views,
and in which Fig. l is a view in side elevation of the device with the spat portion thereof closed and with the leg covering extending laterally in substantially flat position;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the; device when the same is closed about the leg of the wearer;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows; and,
Fig. 4 is a partial view similar to Fig. 2 showing a mochfication.
Serial No. 51%,924.
Referring to the drawings, the device shown in Fig. 1 comprises a spat member 1. This member is formed to fit over the shoe and to enclose the upper thereof, the lower edge of the same extending down around the side of the shoe to a position adjacent the vamp and the heel thereof. A strap l as usual, extends under the shank of the sole to hold the spat in proper position. Secured to the top edge of the spat 1s a leg covering designated generally as 2. The inner end of this covering comprises a substantially cylindrical portion 2 which fits about the leg of the person immediately above the shoe. The spat l and the part 2 are adapted to open along one side, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and to havetheir edges formed with inner and outer flaps.
The inner flap is provided with a series of buttons 3 while the outerflap is provided with corresponding button holes. It will, of course, be understood that any other form of fastening means may be used if desired. The edge of the overlying flap of the spat l and adjacent edge ofits flap on the part 2 extend in a vertical straight line, and at least one of the fasteners 3 is disposed on the part 2 The member 2 has a strip 2 extending from the overlying flap of the cylindrical portion 2 and the lower edge 2 of this strip adjacent the flap at the opening extends upwardly at an angle in a substantially straight line for a short distance. This edge 2 is also in substantial alinement with the fastener 3 which is on the part 2*; The part 2* 'is adapted to be wrapped about the leg of the wearer, in lapped folds or coils, as shown in Fig. 2, and the end of the same is provided, as shown, with a buttonhole adapted, when the device is in wrapped position, to engage a button 4 to hold said end in suitable position. The strip 2 is shaped in plane or fiat condition, as shown in Fig. 1, approximately as a developed surface of the portion of the leg which it is designed to cover. When so shaped, the strip will, when wrapped about the leg, as shown in Fig. 2, snugly fit the same without any stretching or drawing of the material. In order to secure a perfect fit about the calf of the leg, and especiall the rear portion thereof, the device is formed with a bulged portion, as indicated in Fig. 3. This bulge is pref-' erably formed by slightly gathering or drawing the binding 5 at the point opposhape of the strip site the portion indicated by the line 3-3 It may be here stated that the binding 5 extends entirely around the edge of the strip 2 and the edges of the inner and outer flaps of the spat. The portionindicated by the line 38 therefore, which portion is adapted'to be disposed at the rear of the leg will have a bulge in concaveconvex formation as shown in Fig. 3 along the line S-3, and will also have the slight curve for convexity along line normal thereto, as shown in Fig. 2.
l i heio the device is placed on the foot and the fasteners 3 secured, the strip 2 will be wrapped about the leg, and the upper end fastened with the fastener 4. Owingto the 2", the same will be snugly disposed about the leg and will tightly fit the same. It has been found that by having the edge 2 extended upwardly in line with the top fastener 3 and having this edge intersecting the vertical edge of the flap at a cornparatively sharp angle, that'the strip pulls directly against the said fastener, and any sagging or looseness of the leg covering is eliminated. The device forms an article of very pleasing appearance and is designed to be made of felt or similar material which will keep the leg of the wearer warm and comfortable. The successively lapped folds of the device, when wrapped about the leg, form an eflicient shed for snow or moisture coming in contact therewith and the device is thus of great utility for children.
seer
The button 4, in the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2, will be set to accommodate the wearer and in Fig. i, a modified form is shown in which the end of the strip 2 is pro-- vided with a strap 7 adapted to engage a buckle 8 so that the opening at the top ofthe device may be suitably adjusted as required.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and described and set forth in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A combined shoe and leg covering coinprising, a spat portion constructed and arranged to cover the upper of a shoe, a substantially cylindrical portion secured to and projecting above the top of said spat, said spat and said cylindrical portion being open along one side to provide overlapping flaps, the spat being provided with separablefastening means adjacent the edges of said flaps, the greater portion of the edge of the outer flap of said cylindrical portion being free of fastening means, and the outer flap having an integral portion projecting laterally froin the greater portion of its edge, forming a strip constructed and arranged to be wrapped around the lo 1 In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
