To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK EIsENI-IARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Screw Driver, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of tools, and more particularly to a novel form of screw driver, it being the primary object of the invention to provide a novel form of screw driver, wherein the operator may grasp the handle of the driver at all times, during the operation of driving a screw, thus eliminating the necessity of releasing his grip on the handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having hollow handle, to provide a compartment for supporting various sized driving blades, to adapt the device for various usages.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement'of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing 1- F igure 1 illustrates a s1 ing blade receiving end ofthe device.
Figure 2 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view through the driver.
Figure 3 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2; and Figure 4 illustrates an end elevational view of the driver.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the handle portion of the screw driver, the same being shown as hollow to provide a blade receiving compartment 6, there being a removable cover 7 provided on the upper extremity of the handle 6, to permit of easy access to the compartment 6.
The lower extremity of the handle portion 5 is reduced to receive the collar 8 which has its lower extremity notched to provide a plurality of teeth 9, which teeth de elevational view partly in section to disclose the drivare designed tofcooperate with the teeth 10 formed on thenbladefireceiving' so let 11,.
which is supported within'the tubularmen1'-- ber 12, that isfsecured to the collar 8 as by means of thej'set, screw 13, which passes v throughreg1stering0penings formed in the tubular memberlfZ, collari8' and reduced portion-of thehandle. This tubular member 12 is relatively long to permit of movement of the socket member '11 longitudinallythereof, so that the teeth be brought into cooperative 1 9 and 10, may relation with each other to connect the socket member 11 and handle, so that movement of i the handle will be transmitted to the socket member 11 and blade supportedthereby, the
blade being of a construction to permit one extremity thereof to be inserted in the socket member 11.
Shoulders indicated. atl cooperate with:
the shoulders 15 of the tubular'member 12 to restrict movement of the socket member 11 with relation to the tubular member 12. The lower extremity or reduced'portion of the andle 5, is provided with a cut out portion extending fromthe extreme lower end thereof and terminating at a point in spaced relation with the lower wall of the compartment 6, and is provided to accommodate the coiled spring 16 which has one of its ends seated on the base 17 of the socket member 11, the upper end thereof contact ing with the upper wall of the cut out por-' tion, so that the spring will normally force the-teeth 9 and lO out of cooperative rela tion with each other to permit the handle portion 5 to vbe rotated with relation to the socket member 11. i
In the operation of the device, assuming that a driving blade is positioned in the socket member 11,,and the blade'is positioned ona screw to cause the same to be screwed home, it is obvious that when pressure is exerted on the handle 5, the teeth 9 are forced between the teeth 10 of the socket member 11, and slight rotation of the handle 5 causes the socket member to be rotated to rotate the screw under operation.
It is obvious that when pressure on the handle 5 is relieved, the teeth 9 and 10 are moved out of engagement with each other by means of the spring 16, and the handle may now be rotated in the opposite direcmay be again depressed and rotated, resulting in the rotation of the screw, in one direction.
Having thus described the invention, W11 is claimed as new is A screw driver comprising a hollow handie having a reduced end section, said reduced end section being hollowed out to provide a coiled spring housing, a collar positioned on the hollow reduced portion of the handle and having teeth formed in its lower edge, a'blade receiving socket member positioned over the reduced portion. of
the handle and having teeth adapted to mesh With the teeth of the collar, said socket member having-a shoulder providing a rest for one end of a coiled spring, said blade receiving socket member having a shoulder formed on the periphery thereof, and a tubum Lessee? lar member embracing the collar and a portion of the blade receiving socket member, said tubular member having shoulders c0- operating with the shoulders of the blade receiving socket member to restrict movement of the blade receiving socket member, means for securing the tubular member to-the handle, anda coiled spring disposed Within the hollow portion of the reduced end of the handle for normally urging the teeth out of engagement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto a'ffixed my signature in the presence of two 'WltIlGSSGS.
