BEARING FULLER.
Application filed m 4, 1921. erzlal no. 466,803.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST P. CAMPBELL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bearing Pullers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying .draw-' ings, and 'to the characters of reference marked thereon, which forma partof this application. I
This invention-relates to improvement-sin bearing pullers such-as are used to draw the inner races ofball bearings (from the shafts;
on which they-areldriven, andiis particularly an improvement'overj. that fl'type, of puller shown in m .-Pa 'nt F ebruar'y 15th';'.1916.
The pri cie; 1. ob'ect'fof fate-pre ent in.
vention istoconstruct a puller-of. the above mentioned in sucl1-a" mannerthat the jaws -.aref inteichangeable. This feature alone marksfa greatiniproveinent' over the former type',;.'sii1oe it' means thatwhen the devices are being manufactured the jaws are all madefexactfduplicates :of each other and when assembling the "pullers, the; jaws may be taken-up at .raudom, instead of'ha-ving to have a certainf one to cooperate-with the adp jacent one,"as' was the case withy-thepuller,
already patented; Bothf operations above cited means reduced costs in manufacturing.-
This inter-changeability of; the jaws also permits the readyreplacement of a jaw. from hand or sent from the. factory.
Another object of this invention is to arrange tha'tthe screw-pin, whichis forced against the shaft-when pulling a bearing,
shall have a considerable and constant bearing area for its threads, irrespective of-the spreading of the jaws. This feature is also lacking in the previously mentioned patented article.
As a whole, thearticle has been made more eflicient, while the cost of manufacture has been .reduced.
The above objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully-appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
r 0:; 1,590, dated 1 In order to normally 1 is a side elevation of the puller. F g. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 1s a fragmentary-section through the screw-collar.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings the numeral 1 denotes a threaded pin provided .at one end with'a turning handle 2 and at the other witha tapered point 3- to engage t-heusual socket in the end of a shaft 4 having the bearing 5 thereon to be pulled.
Ihreaded on the pin is a sleeve 6 having a central outwardly projecting flange .7. Surrounding the sleeve and extending lengthwise of the-pin in the direction away from the handleare jaws 8 provided at one end'with grooves 9 to'engagethe flange 7 and at. the other with flanges or lugs 10 proecting inwardly and shaped to fit the groove 11 in the bearing.
Surrounding'thejaws loosely is a collar 12, threaded into which are screws 13, one for each jaw, and which pass through said jaws and seat in orifices 14 in the sleeve-flange 7. The sleeve 6',tapers inwardlysomewhat toward each end from the flange 7, so as to allowvfreedom of movement of the jaws.
.The screws also pass freely through the jaws so as not to cause a binding of any of such.
arts. At the opposite ends; of the jaws the latter are enlarge and taper outwardly somewhat toward such end, as shownat 15, and are surrounded by a taper-boredring or collar I6, which may be retracted onto the smaller portion of the jaws to allow the latter to be be moved onto and wedged firmly in contact with the tapered porti0n,'so as to clamp the this device and the one shown in the aforementioned patent is in" the manner of connecting the jaws to the operating or pulling screw so that the screw at all times has a constant area of engagement with the sleeve,
spread, to engage a bearing, and may then l is mounted under the while at the same time the jaws are allowed plenty of flexibility of movement at their outer ends. A
Also it will be noted that the jaws not beingthreaded, they may all be jigged to a common standard, and hence are interchangeable.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that l have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not for a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
menace 1. A bearing puller comprising a threaded pin adapted for rotation, a sleeve threaded onto the in, an outwardly projecting flange on said sleeve, and a plurality of bearing-engaging jaws surrounding said sleeve and provided with grooves in which said flange seats and being flexibly connected thereto,
screws threaded into the collar and passing freely through the jaws and being seated in the flange.
In testimony whereof ll afix my signature.
ERNEST P. CAMPBELL.
