Description

L. C. ZIVIMERMAN AND C. F. THICK.
TABLE TOP.
APPLICATION HLED ocT.1,1sz1.
@www v Patented No.. 7,1922.
Patented Nov. 7, i922.,
nutren stares MMA@ LEON C. ZIMMEBMAN AND CHARLES F. TRICK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TABLE TOP.
Application led October 1, 1921. Serial No. 504,557.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LEON C. ZIMMERMAN and CHARnEs F. THICK, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Table Top; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Cui' invention relates to table tops of the sort that are used to supplement the ordinary top of a table and afford a protective cover therefor.
lt is an object of our invention to form such a cover of a material so light that it may conveniently be made in a single piece large enough to cover the whole table.
it is a further object of our invention to form a table cover with a surface so finished that it may be used without the necessity of covering it with a cloth or other concealing^ device.
it is a further object of our invention to provide such a cover with a surface so dressed as to imitate the top of a fine quality wooden table.
lit is a further object of our invention to provide such a. cover with a nished surface of a kind that may be easily kept clean andshall serve in the place of a table cloth for serving a meal.
@ther and further important objects of our invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings and the following specification, in which we have illustrated and described our invention in a preferred form.
@n the drawings:
Figure l is a view of a table with our invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a section iof 4one form of our invention.
Figure 3 is a section of a modied form.
Figure a is a' section of still another modified form.
As shown on the drawings:
rlhe table l has an ordinary top '2 which may be either a highly finished top that the user of the table desires to protect or an unsightly top that the owner wishes to conceal.v
The tcp is covered by a sheet 3 of material made by any of'several methods. As illustrated in Figure 2, this sheet is made by superposing several layers l of pasteboard or similar material. These layers are secured together' by glueing or any other standard method and are firmly held in shape until the glue has dried by exert-ing strong pressure against them. `The lower face of the sheet is covered by a layer 5 of enamel paint or other suitable surface producing a white, glossy surface. in the form illustrated in this ligure, the edge is also covered with enamel, as shown at 6, and the upper surface, as shown at 7, is also'covered by the same sort of enamel.
lln the modification shwn in Figure 3, the layers 8 of pasteboard are secured together in the same way as explained in connection with Figure 2, and a surface 5 of enamel is app-lied to the lower layer. The uppermost layer of pasteboard 9 is intended to have its outer facecovered with a layer of varnish or other polishab'le material. Preferably this varnish or other finish is made to imitate expensive or rare wood and the coating for the pasteboard is of material that can be so iinished. if the pasteboard used for the layers 8 is of a sort that will not take such a coating, the layer 9 will he made of a different sort of pasteboard or even of veneer. if desired, the edge as shown at ll will also be covered with finishing material similar to that covering the face l0.
in the modiication shown in Figure e, instead of a. plurality of layers of past-eboard, a single thicker layer of compressed pulp or similar material is used, as shown at l2. This is surmounted by a layer i3 of pasteboard similar to the layer 9 in 3. The upper face le and the edges l5 of the form shown in Figure a are covered with varnish or other coating capable of taking a high nish, the same as in Figure 3, and
.the lower face 5 is covered with enamel, as
Figure itl@ second surface of enamel used. In this way,
, a double length of usefulness of the cover is `finished wood, but When it is desired that the table shall present a white surface, this form of cover is placed upon. the table with the surface 5 uppermost. The form shown in Figure 4 is employed in the same way as the form shown in Figure 3.
Of course, the table top may be constructed in a plurality of sections, for con-V venience in handling, these sections being joined .in position on the table in any suitable manner.
We are aware that numerous changes in the details of construction may be made Without departing from the principles of our invention, and We therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention:
A cover composed of several layers of light material, finishing material applied to the exterior faces and the edges of said cover, the finishing material upon one face being white enamel and that upon the other face being a varnish of a sort capable of taking a high linish.
'In testimony whereof, We have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
