Description
F. B. MUNRUE.
Whip-Sockets.
Patented Oct. 7,1\8 73.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK B. mum on, or MALDEN, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM WARREN RIoHARDsoN, or wnsrrrnnn, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,417, dated October 7, 1373; application filed July 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK l3. MUNRoE, of Malden, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Whip Socket or Holder for WVheel-Garriages; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the .following specification and represented in the accompanying drawas hereinafter explained, so as to constitute a new or improved whip holder or socket, capable of readily adapting itself to any whip, and of firmly supporting or holding it.
In the drawings, A denotes a cylindrical case, closed at bottom, and capped at top by a cover, B, composed of a cylindrical ring, a, and a hollow conical ring, I), the latter being inverted, and connected at its larger end to the top of the ring a. There extends into the space around the conical ring and the case A the upper ends or parts of a series of three thin plate jaws, F, formed as shown, and encompassed by the elastic rings 0 D of india-rubber, the upper ring being supportedon spurs or projections 9 extended from the jaws. Near their lower ends these jaws are sustained by the bottom guide E, formed of a disk, (I, and a series of three arms, 0 c c, radiating therefrom, as shown. These arms extend through holes in the jaws. The series of jaws arranged in the case A rest on its bottom, the upper ends of the jaws being in the space about the ring I) of the cap.
On forcing a whip-handle into the mouth 6 of the cap, and down between the jaws, the latter will be extended so as to grasp it firmly and fit to it, whatever may be its taper, or
whether it be cylindrical, the bottom guide and the conical part b keeping the jaws in their due relations, and enabling them to move outward and inward, as circumstances may require.
What I claim as my invention is-- The combination of the ring or fiustum I), the case A, the series of jaws F, the annular springs O D, and the bottom guide E, combined and applied substantially in manner and to operate as and for the purpose described.
FRANK B. MUNROE.
