NOISE SUBDUER .QtIiTD PROTECTOR FOR IBILLIARD-OUE BUTTS.
Application filed February 12, 1921. Serial No. 444,360.
7 '0 a ZZ 41/ Ito/2t it may concern Be 1t known that LWVILLTAM lVUnnrnnLn,
Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State 01" Pennsylvania, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Noise Subduers and Protectors for Billiard-Cue Butts. of which the following is (i-specification.
This invention relates to a butler device designed to be attached to the butt end of a billiardcue and the like, primarily forthe ur Jose of initi 'atin as far as )ossible the annoyance caused by the noise due to the prevalent habit of players of thumping the butt end of their cues upon the floor between shots, and further to protect the butt end of the cue from injury due to such thumping action.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character described, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which may ,be attached to the butt end of a cue withoutthe use of screws and the like, which is simple in its construction and arrange ment, strong, durable and eflicient in its use, attractive in appearance, readily attached in position, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the accomplishment of these and suclf other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement herein specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the device shown is merely illustrative of what is now thought to be the best embodiment thereof, and that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
in the drawing forming a portion; of this specification. and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: I
Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of a billiard one provided at its butt with a buffer device in accordance with this invention, with a portion of the cue broken away.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the hufler device and associated part of the cue butt shown in cross section.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device.
Referring in detail to the drawing 1 de-.
notes a substantially cup-shaped hollow body portion, preferably constructed from resilient material, namely, rubber or its equivalent. The body portion 1 is formed with the chamber 2 having a rounded bottom 3 which conforms to the contour of the butt end 4: of the one 5 adapted to seat-therein.
The upper end of the body portion 1 is formed with an inwardly disposed annular gripp ng flange 6 extending into the chamher. 3. The flange 6 is substantially triangular in cross section and gradually in creases in diameter toward the bottom ,3 of the chamber 2. i
A circular cushion disk 7 is formed inte gral with the outer face of the bottom of the body portion 1 and is adapted to deaden the sound and noise if the one is thumped upon the floor by the player, and further to prevent liabihty of marring or damaging the cue butt 4 by such thumping action My improved buffer device is attached to a billiard cue of the usual construction by reducing the diameter of the butt 4 sufliciently to permit of its insertion into the chamber 3 and to bring the periphery of the body portion 1 flush with the periphery of the adjacent butt portion of the one. An annular groove 8 is formed at the upper end of the reduced portion of the butt 4: for the reception of the annular gripping flange 6.
A. coating of glue, cement 9, or equivalent preparation is interposed between the reduced portion of the butt iand the wall of the chamber 3, thereby securely attaching the device and preventing displacement thereof, without the use of screws and the like which are liable to split the butt of the one The flange 6 being tri-angular in cross section and the groove 8 being rectangular in crosssection, only one-half oi? the latter will be filled by the former, leaving ample space for the entrance of glue, cement and the like, into the other one-half of the groove 8.
While illustrating and describing the application of my improved bufl'er device in 2. A device forthe purpose seti'orth comprising a chambered resilient body having an inwardly extending gripping flange at the top of the wall of the chamber in said body, said flange being flush with the top edge of said body.
A device for the purpose set forthcomprising a chambered resilient body having the wall of the chamber provided with an inwardly extending gripping flange triangular in cross section, said flange having wider portion flush with the top edge of said body.
4. A device for the purpose set forth cont. prising a hollow resilient cup shaped body open at its upper end and having a rounded closed-bottom'provided with a cushioning disk of less diameter than the diameter of the body, said body having its inner tace provided. with :an inwardly extending .annular flange flush with the top edge of the body.
5. A device for the purpose set f forth comprising a resilient body formed with a chamber having the upper portionof the Wall thereof providedwith an inwardly'extending gripping flange flush with the top prising an annular resilient body formed with achamber having the upper portion of the wall thereof provided with an inof triangular contour in vertical section and 1a cushioning disk projecting from the lower .face ofsaid body and of less diameter than said body. a
7. A device for the-purpose set forth comprising an annular resilient body formed with a chamber having the upper portion thereof provided withan inwardly extend ing annular gripping flange substantially tri-angularin cross section, and flush with the top edge of said body, saidchamber having a rounded bottom, and a protuberance extending from the outer face of the bottomof said body and in the form of a circular disk and of less diameter than said body.
8. device for the purpose set forth C0111- prising a hollow cup shaped resilient body having an open top and 'a closed bottom said body formed with an outwardly projecting cushioning disk and said body having itsiinner faceformed with an inwardly projecting annular gripping "flange flush. with the top edge of said body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM "WUERTHELE.
