Be it known that I, PAUL L. VARBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carrollton, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Spring Compressors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in valve spring compressors and has for an important object thereof the provision of a tool of this character which is capable of substantial general use.
In the majority of different types of automobile and tractor engines the available support against which one jaw of a spring compressor may be applied while compressing the springs of a valve thereof, are situated at varying distances from the valve spring and accordingly a valve spring compressor of the usual character which is adaptable for use in one engine will be use less for compressing the springs of the valves of another engine.
An important object of this invention is to provide a device of this character in which the valve spring engaging arm of the tool is longitudinally adjustable upon the frame engaging portion thereof so that the spring engaging portion may be adjusted to engage valves and valve springs of different engines.
A further object of this invention is to provide a frame engaging member for a valve spring compressor of this type which is removable and reversible and which is adapted at one end for use in engaging the frames of automobile engines and at the other end for engaging the frames of tractors.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section, showing my spring compressor applied for use in compressing the springs of an automobile engine;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the compressor employed with a tractor engine;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates aframe engaging handle provided at one end with an angular portion 11 having its lower end notched, as at 12, for a purpose hereinafter to appear. The opposite end of the handle member 10 is straight and is provided in its under surface with a notch 13. The numeral 14 indicates a spring engaging handle member, the operating end of which is furoated to form spaced arms 15 having pivotally connected thereto, as at 16, a valve spring seat engaging member 17, which is provided upon its inner edge with a mar ginal flange 18 serving to prevent flying out of the spring when released.
The handle member 1% has formed therein a series of longitudinally spaced openings 19 adapted for the interchangeable reception of a pivot pin 20 by means of which a pivot yoke 21 is secured thereto. This yoke has an opening 22 formed therein through which the handle member 10 is disposed. The free or operating end of the handle member 14. has secured thereto, as at 23, the upper link of a chain 24, the cross bars 25 of which are adapted for the interchangeable engagement with the corresponding end of the handle 10, so that the handle members 10 and l t-may be held in adjusted position after compressing the spring.
In the use of my device, when it is desired to employ the same with the engine of an automobile, the end 11, or angle portion, is usually employed next adjacent the engine as illustrated in Figure 1, the bead or flange 26 formed upon the outer edge of the valve chamber usually serving as a suitable point of engagement as the notch 12 may be engaged therewith. The lower end of the angular portion 11, however, may be engaged with any desired portion of the frame of the engine and the valve seat engaging member 17 engaged beneath the valve seat 27 of the valve. If the operating ends of the handle members are now brought together, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 1, the valve spring will be com pressed and a chain may be engaged to hold the handles in this position so that the operators hands may be free to remove the spring retaining pin.
When it is desired to employ the device with a tractor where the tappet mechanism is generally seated behind the flange 28, of considerable height, and where it is necessary that the spring seat engaging jaw 17 be brought to a point on a line with, if not be low, the point of engagement of the handle member 10, the handle member 10 is withdrawn from the yoke 21 and reversed to a position shown in Figure 2. y g
It will be obvious that in event of the point of engagement being further spaced from the tappet mechanism-of the valves than in the constructions illustrated, this may be readily compensated for by sliding the yoke 21 upon the handle member 10 until the awl'? will proper-1y engage with the valve spring.
From the foregoing it is believed to be obvious that I have constructed a valve spring compressor which is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the fact that it is capable for use with a wide range of different engines and by reason of the fact that the simplicity of the construction thereof renders the same capable of very cheap manufacture. It will furthermore be obvious that the construction as hereinabove set forth is capable of some change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of my invention, and I accordingly do not limit myself to the specific structure hereinabove set forth except as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a valve spring compressor for the valve springs of internal combustion engines, a pair of pivotally connected handle members one of which is provided at one end thereof with a spring seat engaging member, the other of said handle members being reversible and adapted at either end thereof for engagement with the casing of the engine.
2. In a valve spring compressor for the gines, a handle member adapted at one end for engagement with a spring seat, a yoke pivotally connected with said handle member and a second handle member reversibly and slidably mounted in said yoke and adapted at either end for engagement with the casing of the engine.
4c. In a valve spring compressor for the valve springs of internal combustion engines, a handle member provided at one end thereof with a pivotally mounted valve spring seat engaging member, a yoke adjustably and pivotally connected with said handle member and provided with an opening, a second handle member provided at one end thereof with an offset, said handle member being provided at each end thereof with engine casing engaging portions, said handle member being slidablyand reversibly directed through said yoke.
