A. .l. DRAKE. Butter-Tubs.
N0. 142,843. PatenmedSeptember16,l873.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ANDREW J. DRAKE, OF MIDDLETOWN, NEIV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-TUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142, 843, dated September 16, 1873; application file April 12, 1873. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. DRAKE, of Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butter-Tubs, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved butter-tub. Fig.2 is the same view as Fig. 1, the cover being removed. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section of the same taken through the line a; m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail section taken through the line y 3 Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of the ears of that classof tubs known as return butter-tubs in such a way as to enable them to hold the covers sceurely, and at the same time allow said covers to be readily and conveniently detached. The invention consists in securin g the cover of a tub by means of two pairs of metal plates, so constructed as to prevent said cover being lifted off, while a screw is arranged to prevent a horizontal or sliding movement thereof, as hereinafter described.
A is the body of the tub, and B the cover of the same, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. 0 and D are plates secured to the cover B on the upper side at opposite points. Each is provided with a flange overhanging the edge of the cover, and this flange is out out in the middle part to form corner-lugs, as shown in Fig. 4, inclined inward to engage with the dovetailed head or upper end of the plates F, which are applied to the sides of the tub. In the upper edge of the side of the tub-body A are formed recesses a for the lugs of the plate F to drop into when applying the cover. The cover is then slid horizontally into place. G is a wide-headed screw, which screws into a nut cast solid upon the under side of the plate D, and which is let into a recess formed in the cover B to receive it. The head of the screw G is made wide enough to overlap the upper part of the outer side of the plate F, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that when the screw G is screwed into place the cover B cannot he slid back to allow it to be lifted off. The outer edge of the plate D is made with an outwardl y-projectin g flange to cover and protect the screw G, as shown in Fig. 3. The cover is removed by turning the screw G outward sufliciently to allow the lugs of the plate D to be slid into the recess a, when the cover B may be lifted off. The head of the screw G has one or more cross-slots formed in it, so that the said screw may be turned out and in with a nail or the blade of a pocket-knife, though the screw may usually be turned with the fingers.
Having thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the ears formed of the plates 0 E and D F and the screw G with the cover B and body A of a butter-tub, as and for the purpose described.
ANDRE W J. DRAKE.
