IMPRQVEMENT IN ERQWHAMMER LEFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. H EQflQit, dated September 9, 1873; application filed April 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Pack, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain Improvement in Drop-Press Lifters, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to lifters employed for raising the drops of drop-presses; and con sists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts which have for their object to improve the operation of said lifters, as will be fully set forth hereafter.
Figure 1 represents part of the drop-lifter in perspective with my improvement attached, and Fig. 2 a side elevation.
A A represent the standards or hangers, which afford bearings for the shaft B, to which is attached the crank C for imparting a reciprocating motion to the drop. On the shaft B. is a sleeve-shaft, D, carrying the ratchet-wheel E. The arm F is rigidly attached to the shaft B, and has projecting from the side next the ratchet-wheel a pin, a, on which works the pawl or dog I), and as the sleeve is revolved the pawl engages with the ratchet and elevates the crank C, to which is attached the weight or drop; and as the crank has slightly passed the upper vertical point, the guard c throws out the pawl and allows the drop to fall, when the pawl is again engaged with the ratchet, and the weight thus alternately elevated and dropped.
This mechanism for operating the drop is old, and my invention does not comprise it 3 but heretofore considerable trouble and inconvenience has been experienced in the use of the springs for keeping the pawl in contact with the ratchet, and my invention is intended to obviate this and produce a better spring.
On the upper part of the pawl ashoulder, i,
is formed, against which presses the curved der and around the horn e, which projects from v the arm F, while the upper bend passes over and around the pawl b, and bears against the shoulder. A hole is drilled in the projection e, and also in the part of the bar 61 that passes around it, and through these holes a screw, h, is passed; and on this screw, against the bar 61, is pressed a spring, f, which may be either of rubber or of metal. The spring is kept against the foot of the bar at by means of the washer and nut g, anl can be readily and accurately regulated, as regards pressure, by screwing or unscrewing the nut g.
By this mode of constructing and arranging the parts of the spring I secure a long movement of the end of the pawl with but a slight compression of the spring, and constructed according to my invention the pawl operates more perfectly; and the spring can be easily repaired, or a new one inserted, by any unskilled workman, its adjustment being accomplished by the screw and nut, or other equivalent devices.
I claim The combination, with the ratchet-wheel E, pawl 11, and cam-guard c, of the S-shaped lever d and spring f, constructed and operating substantially in the manner described.
- CHARLES PECK.
